I believe I called it ... Inevitable.

If Flip gets the job, I'll be disappointed.

If Flip gets the job, I'm done. After watching the exercise in futility that was Flip coaching the Wolves for years, I am not going to waste my time following a Gopher team coached by Flip. If Flip is picked I don't want to hear the term Villa 7 ever again.

djskillz -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/29/2013 2:16:21 PM)

I think that's an important point. It's not like the program is in a great place right now, so they're likely not "1 coach away". If Flip can help clean up Tubby's mess and get alumni fired up (he can IMO) and some facility upgrades, if nothing else that lays the groundwork for being able to hire a better candidate a few years from now.

This. The rich boosters will give a looooooong leash to Flip, because he's one of us. And I suspect Flip will snag a few good recruits off the bat (playing off the local excitement). We'll see if he has a little better luck than Tubby in making a good run.

djskillz -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/29/2013 2:21:30 PM)

Yep. And the NBA pedigree still helps IMO. That experience and his NBA connections still mean something to an 18 year old kid IMO. Not to mention alumni donors.

Obviously you'd rather have a Shaka Smart/Brad Stevens guy. But honestly, a guy like that's just not coming to the U these days. Not yet. Why would they? Flip's a pretty good option IMO.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/29/2013 2:25:43 PM)

In the Twins forum Ed would refer to this as the sheople. Flip is a terrible coach.

djskillz -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/29/2013 2:27:41 PM)

Who's your (realistic) choice, Tim?

Pete M. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/29/2013 2:27:46 PM)

I mean, here's my worst-case scenario:

Flip keeps the program around Tubby levels of success (even though I think some are underestimating his basketball acumen).

BUT

In that scenario, he has at least 2-3 years of excited alumni and donors filling the coffers and improving facilities.

In other words, the program improves in the worst-case scenario.

Does anyone think that ANY other realistic option right now would raise more money to get this program to B1G levels of facilities and upgrades? I don't. And because Flip has become the hot option right now, any other realistic choice would enrage boosters and turn them away from the program.

djskillz -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/29/2013 2:29:39 PM)

Again, I just don't see hot coaches knocking down the MN door right now. Especially when there are far better jobs (ie UCLA) out there. So who's the realistic option?

The only place he hasn't won in his entire career was in a dumpster fire in Washington. And he's a "terrible coach"?

Who? Anyone better to get boosters to pay money for facilities?

This is the same as my best case scenario for Flip. You guys are absolutely kidding yourselves as to Flip's coaching ability. He teams can't play defense. His teams chronically underachieve. No other organization would have allowed Flip to coach as long the Timberwolves. My worst case scenario is that they join Northwestern and Penn State as the perennial laughing stock of the Big Ten, but with a bitchin new practice facility.

In other words, the program improves in the worst-case scenario. And because Flip has become the hot option right now, any other realistic choice would enrage boosters and turn them away from the program.

I think that is a monumental overstatement.

djskillz -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/29/2013 2:37:16 PM)

Just look at it from an objective view.

MN's basketball program:

has NEVER won even 25 games in a season
has won 4 conference titles in the last 95 years
has finished in the bottom half of the Big10 for the last 6 years (thanks Tubby)
has relatively terrible facilities
has been to 1 Sweet 16 (the Final 4 year) in the last 23 years

It's not exactly a program job that you seek right now. You have to WAY overpay to get a guy there vs. some other jobs, and overpaying is tougher and tougher to do in college athletics because everyone is realizing the value of great coaches.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/29/2013 2:37:40 PM)

Prying the young coaching stars away to come to MN is unrealistic
It's no ones dream job
Other than maybe, ummm, Flips .... [:D]

There are any number of better choices. My God! Do really believe the boosters are going to snap their checkbooks shut if Teague doesn't pick Flip. He can sell a rising young coach who can recruit and actually coach (unlike Flip). The Gophers will break ground on a new facility with or without Flip sometime in 2014.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/29/2013 2:38:42 PM)

Buzz Williams
then

Gulf coast

Then

I try the Wichita State coach(who supposedly is staying)
Then some mid-majors

Well, we obviously won't agree. I don't think he's a miracle worker, but I certainly wouldn't be disappointed by the hire.

Why would Buzz leave Marquette for the U?
Enfield I would think also has better opportunities than the U.

Unofficially, 31 wins in the banned year.

Those aren't bad choices. But I don't see any chance that Buzz or Marshall come, and I don't trust the FGCU guy a bit.

Not in the opinion of former IU coach Dan Dakich. He says that Big Ten jobs are prestigious no matter what school. The BTN brings every program a tremendous amount of money and exposure. Big Ten jobs pay well and Minnesota is now developing a steady stream of Division 1 talent with no in state competition for those players.

What conference is Marquette going to join next?

Will it match the Big 10?
