Buzz Williams
then

Gulf coast

Then

I try the Wichita State coach(who supposedly is staying)
Then some mid-majors

Why would Buzz leave Marquette for the U?
Enfield I would think also has better opportunities than the U.

Supposedly there is some friction between Buzz and the current administration. I think they suspended him for a game and it has stuck in his craw ever since. How embellished is that story? I don't know.

Pete M. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/29/2013 2:45:09 PM)

Plus, I don't think Teague is half as smart a basketball man as he seems to think he is. Good luck hiring the next Shaka.

Prying the young coaching stars away to come to MN is unrealistic
It's no ones dream job

Not in the opinion of former IU coach Dan Dakich. He says that Big Ten jobs are prestigious no matter what school. The BTN brings every program a tremendous amount of money and exposure. Big Ten jobs pay well and Minnesota is now developing a steady stream of Division 1 talent with no in state competition for those players.

Hire Dakich [:D]

I'd take him over Flip too.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/29/2013 2:46:34 PM)

I think not having recruiting experience would hurt Flip. I also wonder how much passion he has for the college job after the NBA.

djskillz -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/29/2013 2:49:37 PM)

I think he wouldn't have much for most college jobs, but he'd have a ton of passion for his alma mater IMO. You never want to let your "home" down.

As for the Big10 angle, I really don't think that means all that much in today's college basketball landscape. The college basketball world is shrinking and programs are getting closer and closer together. Plus with the dominance of football and its money more and more "non football" powers are turning their attention to spending money on basketball. So you can have Butlers and VCU's paying coaches just as much as the big boys. With similar success as well. Hell, look at the last few years in the tournament.

Right. Why go to a spot like Minnesota -- with huge drawbacks right now -- where you'll get fired if you underperform for 4 years, when you can stay at a smaller school, get paid comparable money, get to the NCAA Tournament just about every year, and have a lifetime job?

Pete M. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/29/2013 2:55:26 PM)

And I think Flip will have no problem with driving hard at this job. This is the capstone of his career.

Look, I don't think Flip is the perfect candidate. By any means. But he'll be a HUGE shot in the arm to this program locally -- and that would make a real difference.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/29/2013 2:59:18 PM)

The Big Ten angle is huge. It's much bigger money and like Dakich said, it's much easier to recruit a program that gets the level of exposure that the BTN provides.

And really guys. The idea that we can't the Gophers can't get a facility built without Flip is absurd.

Especially adding Maryland and Rutgers. Into the East Coast.

And I expect more to be added.

djskillz -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/29/2013 3:02:36 PM)

It helps. I just don't think it helps nearly as much as you guys think. College basketball is still a MAJOR second fiddle to football (pains me to say as a bball fan). And the money for a COACH isn't that different now.

Otherwise you'd see the Shakas and Stevens and Fews of the world leaving for the "big" programs.

Plus there's the reverse side; why be 7th/8th best in a conference when you can be 1st or 2nd in a mid-major conference?

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/29/2013 3:05:31 PM)

The money is still definitely different. Both in what you make personally, and even more so in what type of a budget you have to work with. I just think enough guys who have gone to greener pastures and flamed out. Guys like Smart and Stevens have a LOT of bridges to burn before they are remotely close to the hot seat. If they move anywhere, they're just a few mediocre seasons away.

I never said that. I think they would. But I think Flip would give a huge boost in local excitement and fundraising; the other realistic options right now would be something of a disappointment.

Maybe not, but it helps a lot more than you think.

djskillz -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/29/2013 3:09:44 PM)

I just don't think the Big10 is nearly as dominant a presence in college hoops nationally as espoused on here. And it's likely to take a big back seat in the next couple years again with the best BigEast teams and coaches (Pitino/Boeheim/Dixon) moving to the ACC.

I never said that.

"And because Flip has become the hot option right now, any other realistic choice would enrage boosters and turn them away from the program."

You kinda did.

Those two statements are not mutually exclusive. Teague has to get a practice facility -- he knows it, and he will eventually. I also believe it's true that some boosters will close the pocketbooks if they knew Teague could have gotten Flip and he instead gets Joe Schmo mid-major.

He has to have some recruiting experience , he was on Ducher staff and all asst coaches recruit

The point you have been pushing is to hire Flip to make boosters happy and get the practice facility built and the current facilities upgraded and make the program more attractive to a good coach. I think that is going to happen anyway, so why not just hire a good coach from the beginning?

Dude that was 30 years ago.

I'm with Tim.

And I appreciate the support man. You, Ed and I are the hold outs against rampant homerism.

I think the amount of up-front money from hiring Flip would be substantial.

So Tim, lay out the order in which you'd offer the job and who you think would be likely to accept.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/29/2013 3:56:53 PM)

If your going to get it built either way, why hire a bad coach? The coach's job is to recruit players and coach them. Not raise money.
