After seeing Marquette struggle with zone, I wonder if Buzz would work

Same thought
Had some familiar ... "why no adjustments" thoughts during that one ...

Actually you gave me crap for saying that a day or two ago...Ryan Saunders deserves to be an Asst Coach as much as Seth Smith did..

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/30/2013 8:22:32 PM)

Man, I was pleasantly pleased this season with the Gophers "athleticism".
Thought we had turned a corner on that.
Seeing these teams that are left .... maybe we haven't.
Oh my.
It is a game currently dominated inside by large, long, angry, skilled, quick, athletes.
Last couple years the ocasional fat guy/soft guy/smallish guy has been able to compete down in the paint.
No more.

Nope. I said Flip wouldn't take the job if Teague was going to dictate assistants.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/30/2013 8:36:29 PM)

I think maybe Teague was trying to appease the boosters with a Flip pick, but only under his terms. He and Ellis no doubt wanted to stock the assistants with their Villa 7 people with the idea of recruiting and one of them eventually taking over. Saunders no doubt was going to name his son and Don Zierden as his first 2 assistants.

In the end, Flip probably knew he wasn't really the kind of coach Teague was looking for.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/30/2013 8:39:28 PM)

Whoa ... #9 Shockers in
Pretty impressive.

That isn't what you said....I said the AD will have a say in the assistants and mentioned Jimmy Williams...you said that was apples and oranges. I still think the AD and administration have a say in the assistants...

Marquette had athletes.....athletes that can't hit the broadside of a barn in terms of shooting. Athletes that could not recognize how to work a zone if their life depended on it. On the other hand, Syracuse defense was amazing.....they cover ground so quickly.
One has to have at least one player on the court able to control the tempo for their team.

Syracuse was ignored heading into the tourney. They detroyed Montana in the first game. Now Montana isn't a big time program but Syracuse used that first game to show they were ready to prove everyone wrong.

Wichita held on........they looked good but were shakey at the end. but nice to see a Missouri Valley Conf. team in the Final Four. It is a very good conference these days.

I don't care whether or not a basket ball coach and his staff are paid by donations or state funds. They are still employed by the state of Minnesota. As such, there is no place for nepotism. Don't hire brothers, don't hire sons. Unless they have a track record that makes them as equally qualified as anyone else for the position.

If frequently comes back to hurt the institution that does this, be it the spouse of a high ranking administrator getting a positiion with the institution or th spouse of that star faculty member that gets on the faculty but wouldn't if it had been a normal hire.

Guest -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/31/2013 1:50:07 PM)

If Mr. Smith, son of Tubby, or Mr. Saunders, son of Flip, are so damn good at what they do, why must they cling to their father's coattails to get a job. Get one on their own merit.

Guest -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/31/2013 1:52:54 PM)

Tubby hiring his son, Flip wanting to hire his son, gets me to thinking that if Gardy were not on thin ice, we would probably be talking about him (Gardy) wanting to hire one of his sons for a coaching position with the Twins.......either Nick Punto or Toby.[:@]

Really hard watching that horrific injury today.
Really hard.
Kudos to Louisville for pulling it back together the way they did.
Those kids were crushed when they saw what happened.

Re-watching it. The reaction on the sidelines speaks volumes. Kids see it, horrific reactions.

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/1/2013 10:16:38 AM)

I heard that during half time of Iowa game, associate AD Ellis was critical of Tubby's offense. That's fine as many were, but don't air it out in public. That stuff goes viral and could hurt in the coaching search

Gophers stand up to Nepotism.

Good.

Would you have the same stance if Shaka Smart's deal-breaker was his (hypothetical) brother coming to coach? If Teague got as far into negotiations with Flip as sources seem to indicate, it's odd that Ryan -- a full NBA assistant coach -- was the true sticking point.

All in all, it's hard to discern any coherent plan from NoGood to this point. And that's distressing.

Young
Hungry

Up and comer. Find that coach, please.

Agreed. I assume that's why Kaler hired Teague in the first place.

Pete, I get the sense that you feel the only decent hire that could be made was Flip...yet what about Teague suggests that would be a good fit? Why not hire Joel Maturi Jr. if you're just going to hire the guy boosters want and turn over the keys to him? I assume Teague was hired to be very involved in the building of the program. I don't get the sense that Flip would have been content with that level of involvement from the AD.

Thus far, we know (or are pretty sure we know) that one person (Flip) has been offered the job and turned it down. Although I know a lot of locals are up in arms that we haven't hired John Wooden yet, I don't see this search as nearly the disaster many are making it out to be. There are still lots of options out there.

It seems absolultely ridiculous to me that we've made a judgment on Teague before a hire has been made.

Only thing I've ever seen worse was that SlamBall injury where a guy's foot got caught between trampolines and was literally hanging on by a stretch of skin. Just terrible.

If someone wasn't critical of Tubby's offense, they were not paying attention.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/1/2013 11:12:23 AM)

What are the sources of this information? We are hearing a lot of stuff and very little is substantiated. I was guilty of believing Hoiberg turned us down when in reality he was never offered the job (Fred's own words). Everyone assumed Stevens rejected us, but it was UCLA that he turned down. There was a source that said Flip turned the job down because Teague and Ellis wanted input into the assistants, which through the kids game of telephone turned into Teague saying that Flip couldn't hire his son. Now Ellis publicly ripped Tubby's offense. Rayno did a pretty clever piece on how easily this crap gets started by posting that Enfield had put his house on the market. Then threw in an update at the end that his house has actually been on the market since 2011.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/1/2013 2:35:11 PM)

Looks like Tubby got his new job:

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/1/2013 2:38:15 PM)

Not a surprise. Texas Tech desperately needed a coach with name recognition and Tubby desperately needed a job. They had been negotiating for at least a couple of days.

djskillz -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/1/2013 2:45:17 PM)

You had to figure he'd end up back in the south.

Interesting that he's going to a place that just got rid of Billy Gillespie. Reversed roles.

Tubby'll fail at Texas Tech too. He's done.

Tim Reusse said that about Ellis last night on the Sports show

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/1/2013 3:18:01 PM)

And who were his sources? I can't imaging Ruesse was sitting with Ellis to over hear it. Frankly Ruesse is such a buffoon, I take anything he says with a several grains of salt.
