Grant Hill's absolutely a HOF'er. Jay Williams would have been if not for injury. Kyrie Irving will be one day.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/18/2013 9:06:11 AM)

Take it to the NBA thread.

@DarrenWolfson
Richard Pitino on @1500ESPN now. On Eliason & Mo Walker: "They're just not in great shape right now." Clear, but like the honesty. #gophers

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/18/2013 12:33:36 PM)

Multiple U of M sources told the Star Tribune on Thursday that Steve Goodson – the former special assistant to Smith – will remain on the Gophers staff as new coach Richard Pitino’s director of basketball operations.

Minnesota had formerly hired Mike Balado, previously an assistant at Florida International, for that position, but he has resigned, a Gophers source said. Balado has been wooed for an assistant job at Florida International, but there is no indication as of yet whether he will indeed accept that job.

Goodson joins a staff that includes former FIU assistant Kimani Young and former Gophers player and Nebraska assistant Ben Johnson.

Heard the interview the other day -- that's exactly what he said.  He was upbeat about Mav, as if "we just want him to be in a different kind of shape."  The tone re: Eliason and Mo was pretty clear: tubs need to start running ASAP if they ever hope to see game action.

Dave E -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/18/2013 12:51:27 PM)

Souhan was discussing that interview yesterday (yes, I know, I still hate him -- don't worry), and he was contrasting Pitino's attitude towards guys getting in shape as opposed to Tubby, who appeared to just throw up his hands and say "guys are out of shape -- whelp, nothing I can do about it."

Dim Soupcan put together a coherent sentence?

I actually sat next to him on a flight once. He was pleasant and a good conversationalist.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/18/2013 1:11:11 PM)

Too bad his writing sucks.

Dave E -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/18/2013 2:01:12 PM)

His opinions do nothing for me.  Either they are wildly obvious opinions that everyone shares, opinions that would have been provocative and interesting two years earlier but are now safe and uninteresting because they have bene proven time and again over that intervening period, or they're just flat out incorrect (his wildly inaccurate column deriding the state rep who he thought did not support the Vikes stadium).

All that said, I'd sit next to him on a plane flight.

I'm dead serious. I really think he would have been kind of a poorman's Derrick Rose or rich man's Chauncey Billups. We'll never know I guess.

Oh well.

Duke blinders.

The guy had a mediocre at best rookie season and didn't do anything particularly well. Shot horribly, didn't get to the line much, didn't get a lot of assists, steals or rebounds, turned it over too much. Poor defender.

I'm not a big Derrick Rose fan, but as rookies Williams didn't even belong on the same court as Rose.

In his column this morning, Sid said that the U wanted to keep Goodson but that he was joining Tubby. Hmm someone didn't give Sid the memo

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/18/2013 3:24:05 PM)

Sid probably thinks Paul Giel is still the AD.

He was a young PG and starting to get it late in that rookie year. I think he would have continued to build with his hard work and elite athleticism/strength. And he was a good shooter before the NBA. Would have been a regular all-star IMO. Again, we'll never know.

Doogie

The Gophers will have a new strength and conditioning coach. Steve Felde has been relieved of his duties.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/19/2013 1:37:31 PM)

Doogie:

• Gophers basketball coach Richard Pitino will fly commercial to watch juniors Apple Valley's Tyus Jones and DeLaSalle's Reid Travis, amongst others, at a Nike AAU event in suburban Anaheim this weekend. Jones and Travis are teammates for the first time, playing for the 17U Howard Pulley Panthers. Assistant coach Ben Johnson will be at a Nike AAU event in the Chicago area to see Grand Rapids sophomore Alex Illikainen, and others.

• Travis on Pitino: "I haven't talked to anyone who knows basketball like he (Pitino) did. ... I could see he cared about me." Keep in mind that Travis also sat down with Michigan State's Tom Izzo, Marquette's Buzz Williams, and Gonzaga's Mark Few in the last week.

• Auburn associate head coach Ryan Miller is still one name bandied about to fill the last spot on Pitino's staff. The two have spoken at least once since Pitino took over.

• New Gophers assistant coach Ben Johnson: "Growing up in this state and around Gophers basketball, then playing here, you always kind of wish you could come back in some capacity. Now to be back with a new staff and a coach I believe in, it's a dream come true. I'm real excited." Johnson will find a place to live soon, but in the meantime is living at his parents house.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/19/2013 1:49:18 PM)

Saw Ben Johnson's interview.
Seems like a GREAT young man.
The assistants are very important.
Some really good reports on everything that's happening ...

Good news there. If you look at Travis' comments even before Tubby was fired, he in the one out of the "big 3" that is very gettable. He has been pretty openly a big Gopher fan. The things he has said for some time lead me to believe that he wants very much for the hometown team to win him over. I won't be a bit surprised if Travis picks the U.

Dave E -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/19/2013 4:25:04 PM)

It's early.  Obviously very early.

But thinking back to Brewster, there were signs almost immediately that the guy was a complete and total fraud.  That isn't to say Pitino will be successful; hell, he might be a complete bust.  But Brewster never had anything going for him, nor did he have any plan whatsoever as to how to helm a football team.  At least Pitino knows what he wants to do and is doing it.

djskillz -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/19/2013 4:58:49 PM)

And has a couple of great mentors to rely on too.

Really encouraging thus far. If Duke doesn't get Tyus, I really hope the U does.
