Nevermind. I wrote something snarky.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/23/2013 1:13:19 PM)

ESPN 1500

Richard Pitino's first Gophers men's basketball coaching staff is nearly complete.

The "U" will finalize the addition of Seton Hall assistant Dan McHale in the coming days, sources said on Tuesday.

McHale got his start as a student manager at Kentucky from 1997 to 2001, when Tubby Smith was the coach there.

He then joined Louisville as a staff assistant and later director of video operations under Pitino's father, legendary coach Rick Pitino.

At Louisville, McHale worked with Kevin Willard, who brought him along when Willard became head coach at Iona and later at Seton Hall.

According to his bio on Seton Hall's website, McHale "is in charge of the Pirates' defensive game planning and heads opponent scouting and game preparation. McHale spends a significant amount of time analyzing Seton Hall opponents' game film in order to develop appropriate responses to various schemes."

Pitino previously hired Ben Johnson and Kimani Young as assistant coaches. It initially was announced Mike Balado would join Pitino's staff, too, but he opted to stay at Florida International.

I believe I heard he'll be head assistant.

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/24/2013 10:34:28 AM)

Pitino has reached beyond the top 3 in state and contacted Lakeville SG Muccura

Pete M. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/24/2013 12:54:36 PM)

He's also offered Jarvis Johnson, a sophomore from Delasalle.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/26/2013 11:30:02 AM)

Thankfully, we now know why the best man wasn't hired for the U job.
Flip had already been promised a better one.  [;)]
Everythings good now.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/26/2013 11:35:34 AM)

Congrats to Flip on the new front office job with the Wolves. I wonder if he will give himself the coaching job too if Adelman decides not to stay on.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/26/2013 12:11:54 PM)

Meet the new boss...Same as the old boss....

I thought it was Flip that wasn't hired for the U job.
This is what I thought when the Flip deal fell apart at sky u ma. He loves the Gophers. He is a devoted alumni. If you cut him he bleeds maroon and gold. He just didn't want to coach the basketball team.

Pete M. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/26/2013 3:17:35 PM)

I suspect it's a little more complicated than that, Tim. I think he would have . . . on his terms -- which Teague wasn't willing to grant.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/26/2013 3:21:37 PM)

@DanBarreiroKFAN 1h
Gophers officials insist Flip Saunders has not been offered the Wolves job.

Which says his interest was luke-warm at best. I think he wasn't really interested, but he was willing to do it for the U. He backed up Teague's statement that it had nothing to do with hiring his son or any other coach for his staff. In the end I think he knew his heart wasn't in it.

We got ourselves a point guard.

Pete M. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (5/7/2013 1:28:49 PM)

He looks lightning quick -- probably pretty good for Pitino's frenetic style. It looks like Dre Hollins will be getting a lot of run at the 2 next year, which bumps Austin up to the 3 and Joe to the bench. It should be fun to see the new style come together.

Pete M. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (5/7/2013 1:35:40 PM)

Richie P is also hot on the trail of this guy:

Rumor is that MN has a legit shot at him.

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (5/7/2013 2:11:38 PM)

Pitino sure seems to be the real deal. He's also apparently on the trail of this guy:

Whitehead said recently that Minn/Louisville/Syracuse were the three most closely recruiting him. I mean, I'd love to see son beat father for this recruit, but don't color me optimistic... [&:]

But it'll be fun to see if Richie P can close the deal on any of these -- or with any of the Big 3.

He just committed to Baylor. Nice work, Pete. [&o]

He would've been a nice get, but honestly, at this point I'd rather get a talented frontcourt player. Buggs/Oto splitting time at the 4 is abjectly terrifying.

Nice work today, Coach P.

ESPN 1500

Deandre Mathieu made it official on Wednesday, signing a national letter of intent to play basketball for the Gophers.

He's the second player to sign since the hiring of new coach Richard Pitino, along with Daquan McNeil. Both players will be eligible to compete in 2013-14, the university said in a release.

"Deandre is the type of player that fits our style of play, both offensively and defensively," Pitino said in a statement. "He is an up-tempo point guard that does just about everything on the court, which was really evident in the numbers he put up last season. He is a great addition to our program."

Mathieu averaged 17.1 points, 6.1 rebounds and 6.5 assists last season at Central Arizona College en route to NJCAA first-team All-America honors. He was the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference player of the year.

The Knoxville, Tenn., native previously was a walk-on at Morehead State, where he played 29 games as a freshman with seven starts.

Rumors floating that a Gopher may transfer. My guess is Walker.

I doubt it. Last we heard was that he's buying into the system, plus there is a ton of time available for bigs. Also, he'd be losing a year if he goes.

I'd guess it's Ahanmisi or Coleman. Maybe Ellenson.

Good to hear. We need bigs. I was just throwing it out there because I thought he might not want to lose weight. [:D]
