David Levine -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (5/14/2013 1:41:17 PM)

I'd guess its Mav.

He seems to be the guy who'll get squeezed.

Pete M. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (5/14/2013 3:12:26 PM)

Doogie says it's a guy that has starting experience. That pretty much leaves Coleman/Mav/Eliason (assuming it's not absolutely off-the-wall like the Hollins boys).

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (5/14/2013 8:50:42 PM)

Doogie has reported that Coleman has asked for his release

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (5/14/2013 9:09:01 PM)

That's weird. Coleman seemed like he was tailor made for Pitino's system.

Pete M. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (5/14/2013 9:32:10 PM)

Agree to an extent, Sweens, but lets also remember that he's not very laterally quick, can't handle the ball, and can't shoot. Those are three huge components of Pitino's guards. I wish him the best, but I think he just saw the writing on the wall that he was going to becone a 7th or 8th man instead of a starter.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (5/14/2013 9:34:02 PM)

His defense, speed on the break and finishing ability seemed like a natural fit for a forward in Pitino's system though.

Oh, absolutely agree on the latter two. He's great at slashing in the open court. But I have to differ on the defense. I've not at all been impressed defensively. He's not great at keeping people in front of him and even worse at contesting shooters.

So I definitely agree it's a surprise, though I'm not exactly decking myself in sackcloth and ashes because of it.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (5/15/2013 10:47:29 AM)

I'll disagree on the defense, but I won't miss him. I thought he made an awful lot of boneheaded plays out there. His decision making often leaves something to be desired.

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (5/15/2013 2:24:31 PM)

Malik Smith is following Pitino from FIU now and has waiver to start right away because of pgm academically in probation under Issah

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (5/15/2013 3:21:03 PM)

At some point Pitino is going to need somebody in the lineup over 6'2".

@DarrenWolfson:
Pitino to the crowd: said Mo Walker is down 20 lbs in the last month. Needs to drop 40 more. Will stay here all summer

Impressive! So much for my theory that he was pissed about losing the weight and about to bail. [&:]

Pitino says he wants 5 players on the floor that can shot the 3

Great analysis, thanks DL. It'll be interesting to see how Smith's game translates to the B1G.

Here is Pitino on a few of his players, including a few one-liners that he delivered to the estimated crowd of 400 who attended the luncheon:

-- On juco point guard Dre Mathieu: "He’s about as quick of a guard as you’re going to see in the Big Ten. He’s lightning fast. He’s probably only 5-10 but he can windmill dunk and do some things that are unbelievable. He’ll be fun to watch."

-- On center Elliott Eliason: "He won’t be able to play until he beats me in a pushup competition. We’ve got to get him in shape, but I actually do think that he’s going to have a great year. I believe it and he needs to believe it. Once he gets in great shape, he’s going to be a difference-maker for us."

-- On center Mo Walker: "He’s lost 20 pounds, which is great. The old expression, that’s a deck chair off the Titanic as they say. He’s got to lose about 40 more and he will. He’s been awesome. He’s been committed. He’s staying here [this summer] instead of going home, which shows a lot about him. He wants to do it. He’s changed his diet."

-- On redshirt freshman Charles Buggs: "He could be the guy who makes the biggest jump."

Honestly, the more I hear about Pitino (whether he is successful or not), the more I get pissed at Tubby. I mean, how are you a college basketball coach but are unable to get your guys in shape? It's just absurd.

It just shows you how little fire/passion Tubby had. Sure he could stare you down like nobodies business, but I can't imagine the whole team was so uncoachable/untrainable that he couldn't do anything to make them better.

I also love Pitino's attitude. He gets on his guys to get in shape, and he throws a few light/humorous shots in there, but he ALWAYS includes praise for how hard the players are working and makes sure they know how much he believes in them.

Yep. You get the sense that he drives his guys hard without being imperious or otherwise off-putting. That's a unique trait. I think the guys following him from FIU is some evidence that that's true.

FromESPN 1500/Doogie

New Gophers guard Malik Smith's coach at Jacksonville College, Jody Bailey, on Smith's sophomore year:

"Tough player who once in a rhythm can make volume 3-point shots. He is someone who automatically stretches the defense because of his presence on the perimeter, which allows for even more freedom for his teammates. Smith improved his ball handling and making shots off the dribble and scoring in the mid-range area at FIU but must take that improvement to another level in the Big Ten. Good free throw shooter who should be great. Needs to share the sugar on offense even more and trust his teammates. He will take deep three-point shots that will make the Williams Arena faithful cringe if he is having an off shooting night. He has never been a special defender, but understands angles in the multiple defenses that Minnesota will employ which will make up for his weakness. Will know how to play in coach Richard Pitino's style on both ends of the court immediately and will provide instant leadership."

Thanks, good read. The more I read about Pitino and his staff the more I like. I'm looking forward to seeing how he handles in-game decisions, lineups, things like that, and seeing if he can DEVELOP players. Should be fun to watch.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (5/29/2013 12:35:05 AM)

Seymour (Wis.) point guard Sandy Cohen isn’t just the AAU teammate of Cooper star Rashad Vaughn, he’s also one of the top targets for new Gophers basketball coach Richard Pitino.

Cohen, who received a scholarship offer from Pitino, has seen his recruitment sky rocket since he started playing in the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League this spring with Wisconsin Playground Elite. Marquette and Memphis are his best offers right now, but the 6-foot-6 floor leader wants to visit Minnesota’s campus before making his college decision.

“I really like coach Pitino. He’s a really nice guy,” Cohen said Friday night. “I like the new style of play he’s trying to bring to the Big Ten. I really like him. I definitely plan on taking a visit to Minnesota.”

Playing in the same backcourt with Vaughn has raised Cohen’s game to another level in the EYBL. His stats aren’t overly impressive (averaging about nine points, three assists and four rebounds a game). But Cohen has developed a well-rounded game. He has shooting range and the ability to get to the basket.

Cohen’s passing was on display with an alley-oop to Vaughn on the baseline to take the lead with a minute left Friday. Cohen and Vaughn don’t talk about their recruiting, Cohen said. But it’s easy to see them making a great backcourt if the played together in college. They’re both very high on Minnesota and Marquette.

“Rashad is a great player, and he makes it so easy on a point guard,” Cohen said. “He can hit the outside shot or slash to the rim and dunk. It’s been great playing with him.”

Before the EYBL, Cohen said he really had no scholarship offers. He’s picked up 10 offers in the last month, so the Gophers will likely need to remain in constant contact to have a shot in the end. Cohen has no favorites, but he really likes Marquette, too. It’ll be interesting to see which schools are on his list a month from now.
