TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (10/29/2009 11:42:29 AM)

That's a good starting point. Hopefully they will just keep pushing it higher. Tubby's team looks to be the only refuge from what appears will be a season of winter sports suck in Minnesota.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (10/29/2009 12:03:09 PM)

It'll be interesting to see how things play out with Mbekwae (sp?). So far Maturi is handling correctly IMO.

I like sticking with the December court date. Get it over with. It will be interesting to see how it plays out. Mbakwe supposedly has 4 alibi witnesses who were with him in his appartment at the time of the attack. The victim is adamant of her identification of him on the other hand. I think the ID will get a lot of scrutiny as she found his picture on line first and then ID'd him for the police out of a photo array of only his basketball team.

I just hope he didn't do it. If he did it, he needs to be nailed. But I hope it wasn't him.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (10/29/2009 12:53:22 PM)

My thought to a "T" Tim.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (10/29/2009 12:55:04 PM)

Also,  the reason I mention Maturi is that I think he is handling it the right way.  If he would have come down on Trevor (easier to spell [&:]) and took him off the team before this all plays out, ala the Duke lacrosse guys, it would have tarnished TM's image.  Even if found innocent it would perceive guilty in a lot of peoples minds.

Jake Carlson -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (10/29/2009 2:14:47 PM)

I think I read somewhere that he's practicing with the team but is he allowed to play before his court date?

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (10/29/2009 2:53:43 PM)

Yeap, Maturi isn't going to let him play but he didn't ban him from the team.  About the best case scenario IMO.  It's not an AD looking the other but he's showing faith in Tubby and his team.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (10/29/2009 3:04:25 PM)

The Minnesota Star Tribune reports that (Corey) Joseph will make an official visit to Minnesota in November. Joseph’s brother, Devoe Joseph, is a shooting guard for the Gophers, yet they are still considered a dark horse in the race for Corey’s affections.

Rivals has him listed as the 7th ranked prospect in the 2010 class.

Their #2 guy has us on his list as well:

The last time Harrison Barnes came to Minnesota, he might have gone overlooked by fans.

That won't be the case this weekend.

Recently named the No. 1-ranked player in the nation's 2010 class by Scout.com , the 6-foot-7, 205-pound junior from Ames, Iowa, mentioned the University of Minnesota among his top 12 schools. Others included Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, UCLA and Kentucky.

Sounds like the girl and the Duke Lacrosse team. All they showed her were members of the team

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/2/2009 11:10:49 AM)

Mbakwe will sit until the assault charge is resolved. When all is said and done, it is the only thing Maturi could do.

Jake Carlson -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/2/2009 12:20:06 PM)

Unless there's a lot more to this story that I haven't heard, it sounds like all they have is this woman who pointed him out on the team's basketball roster online. This identification in itself is odd. Obviously I have no idea what happened here but I just think it's somewhat flimsy to suspend a player based on what's been released. What's to stop some big booster or gambler from setting up a similar situation against some team's star player. I know it's a pathetic leap but unfortunately in our society I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility.

Maybe there's more to it and Maturi doesn't believe Mbakwe.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/2/2009 12:28:27 PM)

No doubt. I have read a lot on the ID process for criminal trials and this one sounds horribly flawed. First the victim picked him off the basketball team's web page. She obviously thought her attacker reminded her of someone on the team if she went to the site. Does that mean that Trevor was the one that attacked her or did he simply look more like her attacker than anyone else on the team? Next the police showed here a photo array of the team and she picked him out again. This completely eliminates the possibility of someone not on the team, bearing a resemblance to Mbakwe as an attacker. This process continually allowed her to reinforce Mbakwe as her attacker whether he actually did it or not.

If he indeed produces 4 alibi witnesses in court, I can't see a conviction.

Jake Carlson -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/2/2009 4:46:34 PM)

And that's why I think there has to be more to it that leads Maturi to not believe him. On the surface, charges based on one person's "weak" ID shouldn't warrant him being suspended from playing.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/2/2009 4:50:34 PM)

I don't think it's a case at all of Maturi not believing him. It's more of the PR nightmare that would go along with allowing someone who is on trial for battery and attempted rape to play. Especially in the wake of Carter getting arrested this morning. The Gopher's athletic department is at long last free of all sanctions and penalties. Right now they want to maintain as clean of image as possible even if it comes at the expense of innocent until proven guilty. That's just the times.

Jake Carlson -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/2/2009 6:56:18 PM)

You may be right and I agree with you from the PR standpoint. That said, if so that means my earlier scenario of this coming into play by opposing team's boosters/gamblers may just happen someday. Sad but true!

I agree it is a PR move as Maturi has said he believes he will be found not guilty

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/3/2009 10:55:01 AM)

Whoops:

Freshman Royce White and senior Devron Bostick have been suspended indefinitely from the Gophers men's basketball team for a violation of team rules, coach Tubby Smith said Tuesday morning. Smith provided no additional details about the disciplinary action.

Pete M. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/3/2009 11:10:57 AM)

Midterms are getting back right around now, so it's got to be academic. It's just disappointing to see kids not realize a great thing when they see it -- and seemingly do everything in their power to squander it.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/3/2009 5:26:43 PM)

Mr. White is not exactly doing a good job of using his brains:

Royce White, last year’s Mr. Basketball and Minnesota’s top freshman this season, was arrested by Bloomington police officers Oct. 13 on charges of shoplifting and fifth-degree assault at Macy’s in the Mall of America.

Gophers coach Tubby Smith said today that he suspended White indefinitely for an unspecified violation of team rules, but did not elaborate on the reasons for the disciplinary action.

A Macy’s security officer confronted White, who was with three other males, and tried to handcuff the 6-foot-8, 240-pound power forward, who allegedly stole $100 worth of merchandise.

According to a police report, White pushed the security guard “down to the ground two times.” Bloomington officers eventually arrived and arrested White, who was released with a citation.
White was also issued a one-year trespass notice by security officials at the Mall of America, according to the police. Bloomington police Cmdr. Jim Ryan said people who commit the crimes that White’s been accused of don’t usually serve jail time.

White, one of the nation's most highly recruited high school players last season, played for basketball-powerhouse Hopkins during his senior year of high school after being dismissed from De La Salle during his junior season.
Smith also has suspended senior guard Devron Bostick, who was not involved in the Mall of America situation.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/10/2009 9:37:32 PM)

Wow, trouble is just following this kid around.

Police are investigating Gophers freshman men's basketball player Royce White, last year's Minnesota Mr. Basketball, as a possible suspect in a Saturday night theft on the University of Minnesota campus, according to athletic department spokesman Garry Bowman.

This kid is on a mission to screw up his life. Doesn't he realize that he doesn't need to steal anything? There are plenty of boosters who will just give him that kind of shit. Maybe he is just a kleptomaniac.

drew -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/11/2009 12:59:25 AM)

I know we're in the US and A, and we're supposed to presume innocence until proven guilty, but wow is this kid on a roll or what.  He has lost the benefit of presumed innocence with me.  Kids with his talent don't get kicked out of 2 high schools unless something is going on that's really bad.  It's really a shame, because he's such a talented player.  If these accusations are true, I'd be surprised if Tubby didn't give him his walking papers.

Jake Carlson -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/14/2009 2:57:00 AM)

Has anyone heard anything about Royce White being kicked out of school?  I've heard this rumor but I can't find anything to confirm it.

It appears to be true. Local television station reported that he has been expelled.

If true I think he will be recruited by Kentucky and Calipari
