According to the Strib, he has not been expelled. He is still on the team and under suspension.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/17/2009 10:38:30 AM)

Congrats to the Gophs for their win Monday night.

Am very happy to see the frosh Williams making things work.

The anti-Royce White, a well-grounded kid, apparently, and helping. Not a knucklehead.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/17/2009 11:40:36 AM)

I've seen White and Williams both play up close through high school games, Gatorade Shootout and Howard Pulley League.

White is a more polished player and physically more mature from a size and strength stand point. He was also a better coached player though out his teens. He had a bad ass demeanor on and off the court.

Williams is less developed, but from a pure basketball skills stand point he is light years higher than White. From an athletic stand point the kid is a freak of nature. His demeanor was an ear to ear smile before, during and after games. Unlike White his life off the court is on the upswing. What I gleaned from the stories I read about Williams, he was never a trouble maker, but a good natured goof off when it came to school until late in his junior year in high school. He spent a lot of hours making up classes, getting his grades up and preparing for the ACT. He had to retake the ACT a couple of times and kept inching his score up until he made it. After graduation he immediately enrolled in the first summer session at the U to get used to taking college classes.

When all is said and done, White was more NCAA Division 1 ready than Williams coming out of high school, but Williams has a much bigger upside.

Why is Westbrook in street clothes tonight? Hope it's not a serious injury.

Thanks for the excellent breakdown Tim.  I guess what I've been surprised about by Williams so far is that his jumper actually looks pretty good.  I've heard extremely athletic and can jump out of the building, but his shot has impressed me.  He could be pretty dangerous if he continues to develop.

Any signs that Hoffarbers shot will ever re-appear?
Still amazed how fast he dropped off the map, and how long he has stayed invisible.
Not the career it looked like it would be early on.

By now I'm sure you heard he had a touch of food poisoning

Williams is looking like a star in the making

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/20/2009 11:22:19 AM)

This team will not go very far unless someone can start making open look jump shots.  Agreed SMF.  Blake can't drop one in the ocean right now.  Very frustrating.  Still think my man Johnson is the teams  MVP.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/20/2009 12:02:14 PM)

I expect jump shots to start falling. Blake, Westbrook and Devoe Joseph are proven shooters. Last night not withstanding. If White can manage to get reinstated he is another player with good range. Williams Jr has been a surprise from the outside to this point. The biggest problem is that Nolan commands so many minutes and his colligiate history is one of not being able to put it in the ocean from the end of a pier at high tide. He is so bad that his primary defender usually leaves him to double the ball. The other team wants him to shoot. Hopefully Cobbs or Joseph can take most of the PG minutes as the season wears on.

Nolan draws a lot of fouls and plays tough man on man defense

Yes, that is his calling card. Not a bad distributor either. The problem is that you have a guy that other teams are trying to force the Gophers to go to, while he is clearly the last guy they want to go to. That makes for inconsistent offense.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/26/2009 8:37:22 PM)

Gophs up on Butler but it's real close.  Iverson was the story of the first half.  Already with 11 rebounds at half, 11 points and a couple of blocks.  [:-]

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/26/2009 8:52:09 PM)

Physically Iverson just looks more like a man this year.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/26/2009 10:09:18 PM)

He does for sure.  He even has a bit of a tude.  Good win for the Gophs.  Blake hit some big shots, finally.  GOLDEN GOPHS:

1st half - Iverson, DJ

2nd half - Blake, Joesph and Westbrook at times.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/26/2009 10:12:45 PM)

I should also add RS-III.  He missed two consecutive FT's but also hit most of them down the stretch.  Nice.

Pete M. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/27/2009 3:11:25 AM)

One of the worst-refereed games I've seen in quite some time. But I'll take that Gophers win any day. Let's take it to Portland, then send Huggins' thug'uns back to Hickville, West Virginia with a loss.

I agree, they needed to put that whistle away. How they called a continuation on the one play was terrible. After he was fouled the player had the ball on his hip and then made a move for the rim

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/27/2009 10:49:50 AM)

I remember the play you are talking about Jim. I don't think that even met the NBA criteria for continuation let alone college rules. All in all it was a piss poorly called game.

Dave E -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/27/2009 7:21:16 PM)

That was a horrific call. One of many. Terrible refs.

Go Gophs. I don't get ESPNU and it's killing me. 830 it is tonight.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/27/2009 9:55:47 PM)

Why does Sampson get more minutes than Iverson?

Bruce Johnson -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/27/2009 10:11:19 PM)

Teams seem to be struggling with Portlands 2/3 zone defense.

Jake Carlson -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/28/2009 12:33:41 AM)

As much as I love Tubby, I can't stand his substitutions. The way he substitutes never allows any player to get into the flow of a game. He's to blame for the players coming out tight with no cohesiveness. It's no wonder no one can find their shot when they're only playing a few minutes at a time. Granted he's a freshman but when you substitute like Tubby does, you will get completely out of place shots like Williams' NBA-range 3-attempt late in the game because no one can get into a rhythm and feel for the game like that!

Bruce Johnson -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/28/2009 8:07:05 AM)

As the season grinds on, their depth will be a serious advantage.  They still have trouble scoring, it looks like to me.  Their forte is having an aggressive defense and trying to score off of the turnover or blocked shot.

I don't have the stats in front of me, but yesterdays game could have been won if they could have knocked down a couple more of their three point shots.

Edit:  They were 3 for 19 from three point range! Overall, they just shot at 33%.  Some of that should be credited to Portlands good defense, but I agree that some of it could have been due to Tubby's oversubstitution.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/28/2009 8:34:34 AM)

Nicely done. They undid everything they accomplished against Butler and then some.
