Man, it's fun watching Blake shoot when he's confident like this.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/15/2009 8:14:59 PM)

Just his luck. hot first half, gets hurt first 2 minutes of the 2nd half. Limped off the court and to the locker room.

And comes back and sets the school record for 3s in a game.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/15/2009 9:14:00 PM)

Good. Saw him limp off, and we switched channels.

Need him confident and consistent for the Big 10.

Guest -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/15/2009 10:31:21 PM)

I'm not a big fan of all these teams tuning up for conference play by beating up their little sisters. I understand the concept, but disagree completely. I could see one garbage team a week or so before conference play, but Northern Illinois and South Dakota State to gear up for the league season? Hell, Penn State is going to look like UNC after those two dogs.

Jake Carlson -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/15/2009 11:32:38 PM)

Absolutely loved watching Blake go 8 for 10 from 3!! That was very entertaining. I was not a fan when Tubby made his standard line change and included Blake. I hope Tubby realizes the hot hand and leaves him in when we're playing a team that we won't beat by 40. IMO, he got lucky that Blake stayed hot and that could come back to bite us when we're playing a team where we'll absolutely need every point possible.

Somehow Tubby has to figure out how to keep the fire lit under Sampson. When he's playing with some emotion he's a force but it seems like he can quickly lose interest/focus. One guy I can't figure out is Iverson. There are times when he shows some decent low-post moves but then other times when it looks like he just awkwardly throws the ball towards the basket from any angle without a clue.

I've noticed several posts about Tubby's substitutions. He's a Barnett disciple. His substitutions are based primarily on defense. He's done this throughout his career. He got his feet wet making whole scale substitutions for defensive purposes when he was at Tulsa. He has continued this consistently throughout his career. It's not going to change.

Jake Carlson -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/16/2009 12:58:37 AM)

You may be right that we will see no change, Pete. Then I hope he comes up with a solution to his substitutions killing offensive momentum. Even in this game, our offense was putrid when our second line came into the game. We went almost four minutes without a FG against Northern Illinois!! Against a decent team we won't be able to afford a several minute lapse on offense like that.

Speaking of that, watching the postgame interview with Tubby was slightly funny. He was trying to compliment NIU and claim that they're a quality opponent with a comment about how they'll battle for top spot in their conference. He then mentioned that even though NIU is 1-6 they're still a good team. I just found that humorous for some reason and to be honest, if he wouldn't have mentioned their record, I would have had no idea that they're entering conference play with the worst record among their conference foes!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a big fan of his game time coaching, never was. Ball-line defense above all doesn't work in today's game. I'd love to see him adapt and better utilize the individual talent he does have. Call me stupid, but I still like the idea of getting your best players the most clock as possible.

Having said, he does bring more to the table than recent past coaches. I'm somewhat excited about this team.

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/16/2009 10:13:27 AM)

I watched the Gophers last night and Hoffaber had a great night from beyond the 3 pt line. And actually the last 4 games for him have been outstanding. I don't know what the change is, but it could all be just his confidence. If he can carry this game into the Big 10 season, the Gophers can compete with any of the teams in the conference. Him and Westbrook shooting from the outside will just help Sampson and Iverson score on the inside. Now Sampson needs to work the boards more, only 4 rebounds.

They talked about Hoffarber after the game a bit. They said their coaches didn't do anything to try to alter his shot last year, but only worked with him to get stronger, so he could shoot more effortlessly and not wear down so much.

Hopefully it'll carry through the season.

Apparently, Royce White is leaving college hoops:

Royce White put out another YouTube video. His message: he's leaving college basketball.
"I’m making a decision as of right now and it will take something ... big for me to go against the decision to leave college basketball," he said via the video posted at 3:30 a.m. Thursday morning on YouTube.

Was stress from this whole thing causing insomnia?

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/17/2009 8:57:08 AM)

He's 18 or 19 years old. 3:30 a.m. is the middle of his day.

This is what gets me, after the U did their investigating, they turned it over to the city of Minneapolis and they said it could take another month. Someone else has already returned the computer to the girl

Rosen on KFAN this morning did say he's a good student.

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/24/2009 10:00:26 AM)

Gophers ended their non conference season with a 30 point win. Let's hope they can take some of that into the Big 10 season

Bruce Johnson -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/29/2009 6:46:59 PM)

Tonights game is one that the Gophers are "supposed to win".  We'll see.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/29/2009 9:17:21 PM)

This isn't going particularly well. Gophers trail 44-39 with 13:30 to go.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/29/2009 10:19:05 PM)

Defense saves the day, and the Gophs win by 5

Tubby was ticked at the starters effort and pulled them 2 minutes in. The 2nd 5 was worse.

Then they picked it up. Thankfully.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/29/2009 11:55:11 PM)

It looks like to me that the difference in the game were the turnovers where the Gophers only had 8 and the Nittany Lions had 16.  You could say defense, but you can also say that they avoided turning the ball over very well.

Both teams shot 50%.  Sounds like a good game to go to.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/30/2009 8:42:35 AM)

We need someone to step up as our designated free throw shooter at the end of games like that. I trust none of the options that went to the stripe tonight. Good win, though.

I guess Westbrook is gonna be the guy. But he's gotta get that FT% up from 75%.

Nolen is a choker and I don't like him handling the ball under pressure anyway.

Hoffarber must have a mental block at the stripe.

Westbrook hit 83% last year. He's their best FT shooter.

Nolen is still too up/down for me. Would like Devoe Joseph's little brother to come to the U and take over at point.

Watched Wall highlights last night. What a player.
