The good:

• 11/21 from 3.
• 18/23 from the line. won the game, and no one was injured.
• Outrebounded them 42-23.
• 23 Assists.
• 11 Players played.

The bad:

• A 26 point 2nd half lead ended up an 8 point game against a VERy overmatched team.
• 28(!) Turnovers!!

That must be some kind of record or close to it. Worst turnover margin (-22) and still win the game.

Gophers basketball game tonight cancelled because of some backwoods TN school with COVID cases. Shocker!

BREAKING: #Gophers have landed a commitment from UNC transfer Dawson Garcia.

Dawson Garcia is the highest ranked recruit out of HS to commit to Minnesota since Kris Humphries in 2003.

Garcia will need a waiver to play in the 2022-23 season.

By my count, there are 11 high-major programs that haven’t had at least one scholarship player transfer this year:

Kansas
Gonzaga
Duke
Miami
ND
St. John’s
Seton Hall
Villanova
Michigan State
Minnesota
Rutgers

Sounds good, but this will be his third college in 3 years. His family has had lots of COVID problems and that is his major reason for wanting to be back home.

If he gets his waiver, he could be a huge help.

Dawson Garcia
Ht: 6’11”
Wt: 235

Former schools: Prior Lake - Marquette - North Carolina

Out of high school, Garcia was a 4-star rated recruit who was a consensus top 50 player in the country. Richard Pitino certainly recruited Garcia but he ultimately chose to go to Marquette. As a freshman he started all 27 games, averaged 13 points and 6.6 rebounds.

Upon transferring to North Carolina he started most of the Tar Heel’s games through mid-January, scoring 20+ points in 4 games. He scored 26 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in their loss to Purdue in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. But throughout January his minutes began to decrease. Perhaps it was his concussion he suffered in the first couple minutes of their Boston College game, perhaps it was related to the family medical issues going on at home. Eventually he left the team in late January and did not return.

Now he is coming back home and will play for your Golden Gophers. ESPN has him ranked as the 20th best transfer of this offseason.

The first question with this transfer is, will Garcia be eligible to play immediately? He has already transferred once and it is clear that players pursuing a second transfer will have to apply for a waiver to be immediately eligible to play. The official account of leaving North Carolina was for family medical issues and of course, transferring to the school that is closest to your family is likely the one and only place where you’ll be granted the waiver.

The next question is, how does he fit in?

Well most likely, Garcia is your starting PF for the Gophers next fall. He is a versatile forward who can play inside and out. When Ben Johnson wants to go to a more athletic lineup, Garcia could play the 5.

But this team desperately needed another big man in this transfer season to go along with a point guard and a shooter. The big man has been secured and it is about as quality of a big man as Gopher fans could have hoped for.

Gophers will be solid SF,PF, C; if they find PG/SG help they could find themselves in contention next year.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/21/2022 10:34:05 AM)

Ta’Lon Cooper
Ht: 6’4”
Wt: 190
Former school: Morehead State

In his third season playing for the Eagles, Cooper averaged 9.1 points, 5.9 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game. He made the Ohio Valley 1st team All-Conference. His Eagle’s team finished 3rd in the OVC and came close to knocking off undefeated Murray State in the OVC Championship game. He ranked 7th in the nation in assists.

Cooper shot well in this three seasons and clearly looks to get the ball to his teammates in position to score. And at 6’4”, Cooper should bring some solid length on the defensive end of the floor.

In his first two seasons Cooper shot 38% or better from 3, before dipping a bit this last season. But it is his 5.9 assists per game that really jumps out at you. This was good enough to rank 7th nationally and he had 8 games where he dished out 8 or more assists.

So where do we expect him to fit in?

Well, if the season started today he would be your starting point guard. With more time left in the offseason and he will either remain the starting point or give this team much needed perimeter depth. The smart money is on Cooper as your starting PG.

You recall a year ago when Ben Johnson and his staff were scrambling to fill out their roster and they added low-major guards who were largely unheard of. These guys turned out to be the right fit, the right type of player for this system and collectively they exceeded expectations. Cooper feels like that kind of player.

He was 1st team all-conference for a solid mid-major conference, he is a lead guard who is going to get the ball to his playmakers while being able to add some scoring on his own. Overall, this feels like a player who fits perfectly for what is needed.

Cooper and Garcia both will have 2 years of eligibility to play and now the staff have 2 scholarships available for the rest of the offseason. A scoring guard or small forward is likely the top priority along with potentially another ball-handler.

University of Minnesota head men's basketball coach Ben Johnson has announced today that redshirt junior forward Parker Fox (Mahtomedi, Minn.) has suffered a season-ending right knee injury Monday during practice.

"We're obviously disappointed for Parker, especially for how hard he worked to get back on the court this year," head coach Ben Johnson said. "We're here to support him in any way we can as he moves forward in this recovery process."

Fox missed the 2021-22 season due to a left knee injury he suffered before committing to Minnesota in April 2021. Prior to coming to Minnesota, Fox played three seasons at Northern State in Aberdeen, S.D., where he ended his career as the NSIC North Division Defensive Player of the Year, Player of the Year and an all-conference honoree. He was also a NABC and D2CCA All-American.

UNC transfer Dawson Garcia immediately eligible
Gophers basketball’s biggest addition of the offseason, Dawson Garcia was granted immediate eligibility by the NCAA Friday. After starting at Marquette and then transferring from North Carolina in the offseason, the Prior Lake, Minnesota native needed the NCAA’s clearance to play this season. As a former McDonald’s All-American Garcia has averaged 11.5 PPG in his college career. He will have three seasons to play for the Maroon & Gold.

Crystal Ball Prediction:

5⭐️ C 7’2: Dennis Evans to Minnesota

Confidence: 75%

#Gophers likely reeling in their highest rated recruit in basketball since Kris Humphries back in 2003.

TCU and KU also in the running for Evans but Minnesota is in the drivers seat.
