Very interesting broadcast tonight. FS1 did ‘all access’. Meaning both coaches were mic’d up and on camera and on screen in side boxes all night. They even went commercial free so you could hear the timeouts. I thought Johnson came off very well.

As for the game itself, that’s 3 close competitive Big 10 games in a row and finally got a W. They played well, until the end, blowing a 9 point lead down the stretch, allowing OSU to tie, and only got bailed out on a phantom foul call at the end.

As I said, I generally liked Johnson’s passion, knowledge and leadership on display. Only knock is, with an opportunity to ice the game with free throws we ended up with a 42% free thrower at the line. How does that happen?

Is that our PG or C/PF that is that bad at FT?

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/19/2023 8:27:38 PM)

Gophers scored 39 points tonight. Has to be the lowest I've ever seen from a Gophers team. Battle went scoreless.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/1/2023 9:02:13 PM)

Most embarrassing Gophers hoops team of my lifetime. And it ain't close.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/17/2023 10:23:02 PM)

New Mexico looks good vs San Jose St tonight. I miss Mashburn so much. Stud. Will be Player of the Year in Mountain West. Would be 1st team all-conference in Big Ten. If we hadn't fired Pitino, we'd be Top 10 in the country no doubt, with Mashburn, Carr and Kalscheur. Instead....we suck....and historically suck.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/17/2023 10:53:56 PM)

Seriously...let's analyze this. If Pitino was still here..........we would have Jamal Mashburn Jr, Marcus Carr and Gabe Kalscheur. Would we be Top 15? Top 10? Top 5? #1 and eying a National Championship? Fair assessments. Compared to where we are? 1 conference win. One of the worst teams in conference history. Embarrassing. And little backlash. I guess that's something. I see it clearly. Others have cardboard over their sunglasses

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/18/2023 10:16:39 PM)

Another loss. Decent effort. But...

Here's my problem with firing Pitino when we did. 3 of the best 20 players in all of college basketball would be on the Gophers right now if we kept Pitino. Can you imagine where we'd be right now with a starting 5 of Carr, Mashburn Jr, Kalscheur, Garcia and Battle? We would seriously be National Championship contenders. Instead....we are 1-13 in conference.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/19/2023 4:01:15 PM)

New Mexico is .500 and in 5th place in a conference full of human sacrifices. You really think Pitino would have the Gophers contending for a national championship?!. You're even dumber than I tell people.

bstinger -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/19/2023 4:54:01 PM)

I haven't watched a minute of Gopher BB this year. Used to be a big fan.

I haven't watched a minute of Gophers BB in this decade, and most of last decade as well......

Mister Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/24/2023 5:13:31 PM)

Evans asked out of his commitment to the U.

More trouble

Kalscheur?

Not only is he not a Top 20 player, he wouldn't even be in the rotation of the Top 20 teams.

Stick to baseball.

That's devastating. Maybe the nail in the coffin for Johnson.

If not Johnson, who do they hire? A JC coach? This terrible program can't get much lower.....

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/24/2023 9:48:31 PM)

Just when you thought they couldn’t go any lower. The one ray of hope for next season is gone. I was afraid of this. He could have gone virtually anywhere he wanted. He and his family must have been watching in horror as the season deteriorated.

I said at the beginning of the year they’d be bad but, if the team showed steady progress and were better at seasons end, then add the big guns next year they’d be on the right track. Now they’ve shown no progress, and the top recruit is gone. They’re not on the right track, they’re not on a track. Their train has derailed.

I like Johnson but he probably needs to go.

Bill Jandro -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/25/2023 6:21:55 PM)

Best idea is to find a coach with recruiting chops from a smaller school. These types are usually looking to go to a major program.

Pretty sure the major problem with this university is the board of directors. Pres and AD's have come and gone in the last 30 years but the commitment never changes.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/2/2023 8:14:42 PM)

Storm the court!!! That was awesome!!!!!!!!!

The last 2 minutes of that game......epic!

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/2/2023 8:23:54 PM)

This review is the dumbest thing I have EVER seen. The clock started at the right time!!!!

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/2/2023 8:24:12 PM)

He also released it with .4 left, so how can they say it was late if it was .1 or .2 slow on the clock start????

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/2/2023 8:25:05 PM)

They counted it. So unnecessary.

Amazing win! Don't give up. Don't ever give up!

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/2/2023 8:31:02 PM)

Think of all the things that had to happen. 93% FT shooter for Rutgers misses. Battle hits three 3-pointers in the last minute, and one of those was perfectly contested. No timeouts on the last FT by Rutgers, so we need to go full-court. Refs that apparently were looking for any reason to give the win to Rutgers. I have no idea what the refs were considering on that 10-minute review? The clock started as quickly as possible when we touched the ball.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/6/2023 2:28:34 PM)

Jamison Battle, Ta’Lon Cooper leaning toward moving on from Gophers

The Gophers men’s basketball program honored three players on Senior Night against Wisconsin at Williams Arena on Sunday, and it appears like it will be the final time Jamison Battle wears maroon and gold at The Barn.

Battle and Ta’Lon Cooper each have one year of eligibility remaining for the 2023-24 season, but both are leaning toward starting new chapters.

Head coach Ben Johnson told Mike Grimm on the KFAN pregame show that Battle is considering his prospects in playing professional basketball. Battle is the U’s second-leading scorer at 13.2 points per game, and Minnesota’s rebuilding project would get tougher without Battle’s leadership and contributions.

“I think he’s going to be leaning towards that,” Johnson said pregame on the radio. “When you can go and live your dream out in two ways, playing here and being able to put on the Gopher uniform and also play well enough where you can pursue your pro career, whatever that is. We are excited for him.”

Cooper is so bad. He does one thing well. He can find an open guy with a second or two left on the shot clock. Not sure about that strategy on a whole, but he is good at it. It helps that Battle has a quick release. Some of the other guys, not so much.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/9/2023 12:12:30 PM)

One win down, 9 to go to for the NCAA title. Let's go.
