Turner having a big game, Gophers down by 14 at the half.

OS has a high 3 pt completion % so far

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/31/2010 2:23:54 PM)

NIT

NIT

NIT

Pete M. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/1/2010 11:46:28 AM)

Royce White is apparently withdrawing from school. It's really disappointing to see this from a Gophers fan's perspective, but at the same time . . .

G-O-O-D     R-I-D-D-A-N-C-E.

I think this kid might need a mental health evaluation. I understand the frustration he's going through, and I'm sure he feels persecuted (and, in some ways, rightfully so, I'd say). But he's also shown a propensity to be, I think, frighteningly unstable in his public comments and actions.

Jake Carlson -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/1/2010 12:37:51 PM)

I've been wondering lately just how untouchable Tubby is. Considering they are one of the more disappointing teams in the conference, if not nation, is there any scenario where Tubby would be on the hot seat? On one hand, an argument can be made that his team is performing well below the expectations that Tubby Smith and his hefty salary brings. On the other, I just don't see Maturi having the stones to actually pressure Tubby at all. In reality, bouncing around between first round NCAA tourney losses and NIT appearances from year to year should not be acceptable expecially if you're paying a top salary. However, I think Maturi has backed himself into a corner with no realistic choices.

Just to be clear, I'm not trying to start the "Fire Tubby" brigade. Their poor play this year just got me thinking about the possible scenario of Tubby not turning the Gophs into a consistent tourney team/top 25 team, which IMO is a very reasonable goal for Tubby.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/1/2010 12:40:28 PM)

Apparently White made this decision after his lawyer couldn't reach a settlement with Hennepin Cty. The trespassing charges are such bullshit, it's unreal.

Maybe not a hot seat, simply because Maturi has shown no stones.

But a warmer seat. Should have been more with this bunch. IMO some real questionable offensive strategies. Then, no D at all vs OSU.

Unfortunate. His hallowed 20-win season will probably have to be a result of a long run in the NIT.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/1/2010 2:30:26 PM)

Is there really a reason to remove Tubby? As far as I can tell his first full recruiting class is in it's sophomore year. His second class has been gutted due to circumstances beyond his control. He is apparently going to lose his prized recruit because the Hennepin Cty attorney's office needs to save some measure of face. He has lost another high impact recruit because a court case is pressing on even though his player kid now has 11 alibi witnesses for the time he was supposed to have committed an assault.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/1/2010 2:46:18 PM)

That plus.  Can you imagine the type of coach we would actually be able to hire if a guy like Tuby gets canned from Minnesota?  Shit, we'd be lucky to get Monson back [:o]

Yup.

He also took over a team that went 3-13 in the Big 10 3 years ago - and had as little talent as I can ever remember on it.

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/1/2010 3:13:39 PM)

I thought White started practicing with the team last week and was looking fwd to seeing him on the court

And Mbwaki (sp) he is really getting screwed. First he was to go to court in Dec, then it was pushed to Jan and now unless it has changed again is suppose to be sometime this month. He is another guy with witnesses to clear his name

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/1/2010 3:19:08 PM)

The most recent thing I had read was that Mbakwe has up to 11 alibi now to go against a very questionable ID.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/1/2010 3:23:42 PM)

Are you telling me it's not easy to pick out "tall black guy" in Southern Fla?  Who knew [&o]   Total BS ID.  I agree.  In fact, you're being nice by using "questionable".

That's why I wasn't implying he should be fired at this point. I was more looking ahead based on the fact that his team is regressing and even his own recruits don't seem to be making much improvement. Personally, I'm very disappointed in the lack of progress guys like Sampson, Iverson, Bostick and Devoe have made under Tubby. This just got me wondering what will happen if we look back after 4-5 years of Tubby and all we have to show for it are a couple of Tourney one-and-dones and struggling to get to 20 wins each season? At that point, will Maturi make a move or will he be satisfied with that performance or will he want to make a move but not have the guts to do it?

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/1/2010 3:55:43 PM)

Tubby winning 20/year makes him look like Dean Smith compared to Maturi's insistence to hang onto the idiot football coach.

I doubt Maturi would ever fire Tubby. He'll leave on his own accord.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/6/2010 3:09:44 PM)

Doesn't it seem like those buzzer beaters usually go AGAINST our teams? Nice finish Gophers. [:D]

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/7/2010 7:26:24 AM)

Did pretty much every thing wrong and still won.
Very unusual in Minnesota sports.
Our last possessions at the end of halves and games are brutal right now.

I agree. With a lead they need to stay man to man and no double teams. If they score in the paint that is only 2, but they were leaving the 3 pt shooters wide open

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/7/2010 4:16:49 PM)

Was losing to an 0-10 (now 0-11) Penn State team even an option? It appears it was, and that's what scares me about Tubby's crew.

We were in man, we just assumed that they would go to Battle.  When they set a screen for Battle, both Battle's defender and the screener's defender jumped Battle leaving the dude who already made 3 3ptrs wide open.  Just a lack of communication, and the same thing happened in the second half of the Mich St game at the Barn.

We have to win both games this week, and then we can put ourselves back in the conversation for the tourney.  I have been impressed with Joseph at the point considering he's new to it.  He definitely adds an offensive dimension that Nolen didn't provide, and he's been pretty good on D.  Everyone thinks people that get a lot of steals are great defenders (like Nolen) but to get a lot of steals you put yourself out of position a lot too.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/7/2010 4:41:45 PM)

My Gopher BB insider told me last night that Westbrook almost refuses to feed Hoffarber ..
Any truth to that rumor?

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/9/2010 9:57:05 AM)

Mbakwe's trial delayed again. The DA's office finally secured the deposition of the victim at the end of last month after having no idea where she was for months. ARE YOU F***ING KIDDING ME!!! Trevor can line up multiple alibi witnesses and the prosecutors can't even find the victim to get her statement. Isn't that usually the first thing you take care of?

That is as bad as the Duke LaCross incident

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/9/2010 10:51:36 AM)

I agree Jim - I was going to make the same comparison. While they fiddle around trying to find a victim who has given suspect information - a young man has been defamed and has lost a year of his possible college basketball career. I hope that Mbakwe can eventually turn around and sue her for defamation, but he'll never get this year back.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/9/2010 7:48:15 PM)

Royce White pleads guilty to a single count of trespassing and gets 50 hours of community service. Now we'll see if he comes back to the U.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/10/2010 10:31:47 AM)

Quite honestly, and obviously i've never met the dude, he seems pretty whiny to me.  "Under perfect conditions" he'll come back?  Get your ass back in school, work hard and nobody will ever remember this.  He's making it tougher on himself with the stupid youtube videos and such.
