Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/22/2010 5:02:28 PM)

White practiced today.

Myron/Strib reported White had one of the highest GPA's on the team.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/22/2010 5:03:11 PM)

White has always pulled good grades.

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/23/2010 12:01:11 PM)

Up by 8 at half time pretty good. They need to keep the energy going

MS players keep shooting 3's with hands in their faces. They are making some, but not a good idea in the long run

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/23/2010 2:52:40 PM)

Tough loss as Gophers lead the whole game until the end. Tubby played a few players the complete 2nd half and they didn't have the energy all the way through.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/23/2010 4:27:40 PM)

I put a lot of this one on Tubby. We started playing to protect the lead and got away from everything we did to get the lead.

The program really needed that win today to recreate some buzz.
Played to "not lose" the last 5 minutes. Did not play to win.
Hate it when that happens.

Yup. For 35 minutes we actually had a semblance of a halfcourt offense against a good team (I give a ton of that credit to Joseph). For the last 5 minutes we went into "stall and shoot" mode. Hell, even on the final possession we had 15 seconds and we didn't get a clean shot off.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/25/2010 9:40:18 AM)

There's a long line of competition...............but has any Minnesota sports team fallen flat on its face as badly as the '09-'10 Gophers basketball team? What a joke. It's amazing there are any sports fans left in this state.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/25/2010 11:12:10 AM)

Yes.

the 09-10 Gopher hockey team
09 Gopher football team

Seeing a pattern?

Well I had no expectations for the 09 Gopher football team.

Sadly, not much for the hockey team either (I realize that should never be the case).

The basketball team was supposed to compete for a Big Ten championship this year....and supposed to be a lock for Top 4 in the conference. Opened the season highly ranked. And they just suck worse than some of the Monson teams.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/25/2010 11:28:24 AM)

They are disappointing, but worse than Monson teams? Let's not get carried away.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/26/2010 8:49:45 PM)

Good half for the Gophers. The offense looks much better with Joseph at the helm than Nolen.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/26/2010 10:03:14 PM)

I jinxed him. He sucked ass in the second half. Hoff comes alive and wins us the game.

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/27/2010 10:28:01 AM)

Dang those Wildcats toss up a lot of 3's and from well behind the line. Live by the "J", die by the "J"

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/27/2010 11:31:29 AM)

It's pretty sad when freaking Northwestern comes to the barn and almost gets a win.  We're not talking NC, Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, Maryland here folks.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/27/2010 11:32:35 AM)

And, does Sampson actually play for us still?  I see him during TO's and giving out high fives on the floor when a guy gets fouled ect...But, when run of play is on he's nowhere to be found.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/27/2010 11:51:23 AM)

NW's 1-3-1 zone gave them fits.

As usual.

Did in Evanston last year. Gophs will lose there. They have no one in the middle to go to in that approach. I absolutely HATE watching them try to throw it over the top. The offense they try to run against it needs to be changed.

The turnovers they committed against it were inexcusable. Horrible execution. Their best plays were coming after out of bounds under the basket, when NW ran some other defense.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/27/2010 11:57:29 AM)

Tubby and Pam Borton seem to have the same problem. They both emphasize creating offense through defense to the point that they have no half court game.

When NW missed and they could push the ball, there were opps.

Walking up the floor...they really struggled.

This team IMO has under-achieved and will be lucky to get to the tourney. I expected better.

Too many guys vanish on a nightly basis on the floor, leaving it up to 1 or 2 guys to score.

When Cobbs is on the floor, no one takes him seriously. Not a scoring threat at all. Williams from the outside not taken very seriously as well.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/27/2010 12:05:23 PM)

That's the thing that is the most frustrating to me.  I get it that we are athletic and use transition from D to O for a majority of our scoring.  What I don't get is with two 7 footers and really good 3 point shooting, how are we so craptacular in half court offense??

Its amazing how bad we are in the halfcourt. And it seems like every possession is dribbling and passing the ball around for 25 seconds and then finally getting a shot up.

Samson shows flashes of actually being dominant, but he also disappears for HUGE stretches. He needs to find some fire.

We just have no really strong individual scorers. Westbrook has spurts, Williams seems to be lacking a little confidence right now and Hoffarber is deadly, but can't create his own shot.

With the talent we do have, we really should tailor our offense around getting Blake open. Lots of screens and movement like the Pacers did with Miller or the Pistons with Rip.

They are painful to even look at in the half court. I recorded the game because I was watching two others, but when I went to watch it this morning I found myself ff'ing most of our half court possessions.

I agree with doing more to ensure Hoffarber is consistently involved in the offense. Hell, there is no way in the world that he shouldn't be getting 11 - 13 good looks a game.

I noticed Tubby is giving him the clock time lately, I don't know why he isn't involved more. Heck, if you're going to have him on the floor for 30 minutes, and he's not a great defender, why isn't he designing more for him to get good looks? Steve Alford was a college star and he couldn't create is own shot either.

Personally, I'd have him running around the perimeter with staggered screens all night.

Exactly. Good teams just stick one guy on Blake and let the other 4 guys play whatever defense they normally play on everyone else. And it totally takes Hoffarber out of the game. And he just isn't a good shooter with a hand in his face. We need our offense to focus on getting him open shots.

Guest -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/27/2010 2:22:19 PM)

Unfortunately, I see them at 9-9 in conference, 10-8 at best. They may end up having to win two games in the conference tournament in order to make it to the big one.

They should be constantly running Hoffarber off screens to get him open looks. Do that and quit dribbling the ball into double teams and the half court offense will improve.
