This guy just hasn't gotten a fair shake. What ever happened to a quick trial. Sounds like they have nothing and hope he pleads to something

And really, Maturi sitting him, in looking back, was incredibly stupid.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (5/18/2010 11:43:47 AM)

It seems to me that Mbakwe's right to a speedy trial has been tossed in the trash. Among the reasons was that while Trevor was able to line up and arrange for the appearance of multiple alibi witnesses, the prosecution couldn't even find their victim. It's time for the Miami DA to put up or shut up. It's time for Maturi to allow Mbakwe to play.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (5/18/2010 7:41:39 PM)

Who the heck is advocating for this kid? There has to be someone who is putting pressure on Miami to basically put up or shut up. This has become just ridiculous.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (5/18/2010 8:41:20 PM)

No doubt Lynn. I thought the defense had recourse to force the issue. His client is being denied due process and it is affecting his career development.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (5/20/2010 9:00:19 AM)

Now Cobb is leaving and Mbakwe's been given the green light to seek a transfer?  Wow, this program is falling...and fast.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (5/20/2010 9:18:43 AM)

We have known Cobb was leaving for a long time. I don't think it is clear yet the Mbakwe is gone. I think he is frustrated at not being allowed to play until his court case is resolved.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (5/26/2010 10:43:10 PM)

Well a typical Minnesota jury decided they didn't want Jimmy Williams to feel bad about himself and awarded him more money than he ever would have made as an assistant here. At what point is someone held responsible for his own stupidity. Who hangs up the phone, picks it back up and promptly burns bridges with his current employer without anything in writing from his potential future employer. The U should and will appeal this decision.

OTOH, how did Maturi NOT know about previous violations Williams committed while working for his own athletic department until after Tubby wanted to hire him.

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (5/27/2010 9:44:35 AM)

I agree Tim, they need to appeal and take it out of bleeding heart juries hands

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (5/27/2010 9:53:31 AM)

Some jurors actually shook Williams' hand after the verdict. "Poor Jimmy thought he had the job. Yes, he quit his job and put his house up for sale before he had anything in writing, but we all make impulsive decisions. We'll just give him $1.25 million to tie him over until he finds something else."

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (5/27/2010 1:32:45 PM)

Maturi should go.

That actually should now be the first step toward improving the programs.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (5/28/2010 8:02:43 AM)

I heard a Marquette Law professor who specializes in sports business and contracts on NPR this morning. He said the verdict was plain wrong. The way the industry works there are no verbal contracts and Williams should have known that he had nothing until he had something in writing. He also said its well established in college athletics that ADs have veto power over any hiring decision by the coach. I think Williams loses once this goes to the appellate court.

Good and Thanks for the post

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (6/2/2010 10:27:25 AM)

Unf***ing believable. How is either side not prepared for trial at this point? It's been 2 years. In Mbakwe's case I can understand it, given the amount of alibi witnesses he has to schedule for a moving target. There is no reason for the Miami DA's office to not have its ducks in a row by now. They have a victim and I am sure some photos of the victim taken that night and the testimony of the officers that took her statement. With no witnesses to depose or forensic evidence to process what the hell is the delay? This is just pure bullshit. They are stalling him out in hopes of getting him to settle just to have it over. Maturi needs to at long last grow some balls and say that pending the outcome of the trial Trevor Mbakwe is allowed to fully participate as a member of the Gophers men's basketball team.

I agree 100%

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (6/2/2010 10:59:07 AM)

Flood Maturi's e-mail with that message:

maturi@umn.edu

I'm sending something off to him right now.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (6/2/2010 11:04:28 AM)

This is what I sent:

quote:

Mr. Maturi,

The legal system is stalled and Trevor Mbakwe is quickly becoming a victim of the system. Let's not make him a victim of an overcautious, guilty-until-proven-otherwise athletic department too.

I think you should announce immediately that he will be playing with the team. If, at some time in the future, he is actually found guilty of any charges (doubtful given the lack of any evidence against him) - then you can exact a punishment. But he has already lost one year because the district attorney can't get his act together.

Don't add to the problem. Let the man play.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (6/2/2010 2:00:47 PM)

That's quality, Lynn. Wish I could write something like that without making it look like I copied your letter. Can you write another version for me to send?

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (6/2/2010 2:40:52 PM)

How about something like ...

Mr. Maturi,

We live in a nation founded on the lofty ideals of "innocent until proven guilty" and "each may have their day in court". So far, Trevor Mbakwe has been denied both of those democratic principles. We can't affect the decisions made by a district attorney who is trying to piece together a flawed and ultra-thin case - but you can correct an injustice regarding his assumed innocence.

LET THE MAN PLAY BASKETBALL.

Anyone else want a paragraph or two? [:D]

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (6/2/2010 2:56:56 PM)

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (6/2/2010 8:59:19 PM)

I got an answer from Maturi:

quote:

Lynn,

Trevor's legal issues should be resolved in the next 4-6 weeks. We hope that he will be a Gopher. He knows that we would like him to play for us.

Joel Maturi

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (6/2/2010 9:08:35 PM)

At least he responded.

But Maturi seems a bit naive to believe it will be resolved in 4-6 weeks. This is the US legal system, not waiting for a computer printer rebate.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (6/3/2010 9:12:52 AM)

His new court date is set for July 26.
