That works to a degree Jim. The PG in that scenario needs to at least be a decent shooter, so other teams don't simply back off him, double down on a real offensive threat and dare him to shoot. That is exactly what happens with Nolen because he is such a putrid shooter. He does several things well, but there just isn't that sense that he will knock down the open J to open the floor for teammates.

Rondo came into the league as a weak shooter and even now they will just dare him to shoot. He is getting better, but most of his scoring is driving to the basket

Yes, but Rondo is an elite defender and elite passer, great driver, and great ballhandler. Nolen is none of those things.

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/8/2011 3:38:35 PM)

Nolen is an elite defender at the college level (there's no such thing as defense in the NBA, obviously). He's a very good passer and driver and his ballhandling is not bad, either.

Again, sorry Al Nolen took your wife.

djskillz -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/8/2011 3:42:07 PM)

Your defense of Nolen and Sampson is relatively mind-boggling.

Nolen is not an "elite" defender, at any level.

And he will almost certainly not be an NBA player.

I'd say better than average defender, average in the rest, atrocious shooter.

He's definitely better than average in everything, but shooting. That's why the Gophers were top 20 with him and a bubble team without him.

djskillz -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/8/2011 4:22:25 PM)

Disagree. But we're kind of splitting hairs here.

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/8/2011 5:23:28 PM)

I agree that Nolen will never sniff an NBA roster, but most good college players don't. Sampson frustrates me for the same reasons you have described, but he's still an asset to a team that is stocked with quality big men.

I caught a Gophers/Georgia game on Big 10 classics in the past couple of weeks.

Game from 2002, I believe. Rickert was playing.

I don't think a single guy playing that day is still in the NBA, and a max of 3 ... maybe, were even in the NBA.

djskillz -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/8/2011 5:49:55 PM)

I don't really care if he's an NBA player or not---was simply pointing that out in comparing him and Rondo---but the Gophers can and should get a better COLLEGE PG than Nolen. It's an overall weakness of the team IMO.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/10/2011 9:51:52 PM)

I don't believe that the Gophers are a top 40 team, right now. This is another disappointing team in our town. Sigh. It's a tough time to be a sports fan.

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/10/2011 11:40:34 PM)

They've gone from a Top 20 team to a Top 40 (but barely) team IMO. Everything that could go wrong has. If we had this lineup we'd be duking it out with Ohio State:

Nolen-Hoffarber-White-Mbakwe-Sampson
Joseph-Williams-Iverson

djskillz -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/11/2011 12:02:22 AM)

Don't forget Walker too.

But if they had that lineup, they might be duking it out with each other. [;)]

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/11/2011 8:29:27 AM)

Tubby:

"I thought Blake took some bad shots. That cost us. Just to be point blank, tell you exactly what it was," Smith said. "I don't know what it was. I just asked him, I just told him, 'Why don't you shot-fake and get a foul one time, please, during a game?' "

"We're not getting much out of Rodney," Smith said. "He's standing around. I don't know what it is. We try to get him involved."

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/11/2011 9:47:00 AM)

I couldn't believe how many baskets were missed with then shooting right from under the rim. So many in and outs

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/11/2011 10:12:51 AM)

Armelin had some spin in and out.

And i thought if the defender got his hand in the net, it was an automatic goaltending?

Williams' body language was very telling. His turnover near the end when he got up in the air was terrible.

But then again, they had a bunch of those. I liked how Illinois constantly pressured the ball out front in man-man.

The Gophs have a lot of work ahead to get into the NCAA tourney.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/11/2011 10:13:20 AM)

And it's pretty sad how the Illini have owned the Gophs. 21 of the last 23. Yikes.

Over-rated clap, clap, clapclapclap over-rated....

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/11/2011 11:01:36 AM)

This team could really benefit from a walk-on point guard right now. One that was used to running the show at a medium sized Minnesota high school. He doesn't have to shoot. He can just be a poor man's Al Nolen. That's all we need to hold this thing together enough to beat some of these bad teams we have left on the schedule. I know that guy is out there and attending the U right now.

Yup. Find a walk-on that can handle the ball about as well as Nolen (probably won't find one quite at his level there...although I have not been all that impressed with his ball protection this year), and shoots better than Nolen (there are many former HS point guards that can shoot better than Nolen currently attending the U; I am sure of it), and we have a fighting chance.

Yep. Get them out of the top 25.Maybe they'll start playing like a rated team again.

So many turnovers and poor defense.

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/12/2011 10:51:46 AM)

I'm pretty sure that Matt is just trolling, right? Why do coaches even recruit point guards when you can just ask around the student body?

No, I'm saying you can find a 22 year old point guard that might be better than an 18 year old point guard for the rest of this season.

djskillz -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/12/2011 4:26:34 PM)

I've never been so happy for a Wisconsin team as I am today. About damn time that overrated (but good) Ohio State team lost.

Vandy with a big win today as well. Kevin Stallings continues to be one of the absolute most underrated coaches in the country.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/13/2011 5:25:01 PM)

Having trouble disagreeing with Souhan right now...

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/13/2011 5:28:25 PM)

If he would have a point guard, then Souhan wouldn't be using his 20-20 hindsight vision.
