Sure. That's all I'm saying, Ed.

The 2 freshman Nolan and Hoffbar (sp) got some good playing time also.

Who gets the blame for the games we almost lost?

I thought Nolen was your go-to whipping boy...?

He's not my whipping boy. I think I have a reality-based, objective opinion of him.
You seem to have a much higher opinion of him and that's fine. But you imply he was the reason we "almost won" at Michigan State and Wisconsin, even though nothing supports that. Not watching it, and most certainly not looking at his numbers. A better argument could be made that he was the reason we lost.

Again, he was 1-10, 4 points, 5 assists and 5 turnovers, combined. And it wasn't like he shut down his counterparts.

And 30% behind the arc is pretty horrid, even for a point guard.
Starting PG's in the Big Ten have shot 395/1024. That's .3857 average, and Nolen shoots .303. He'd have to improve by 9% just to reach average.

I took a look at 40 starting (and/or guys that logged considerable minutes at PG) PG's, comprised from the current top 35 teams in the country. Only four (Siva 29%, Dash Harris 17%, Pane 22% and Mazzulla 19%) shoot it worse than Nolan behind the arc.

I don't think he's a "very solid PG" for a top 25 team. That's been my point all along.

He was a solid PG on a top 25 team before he got injured.

Not really. Solid "for the Gophers". But again, that's my point. To be a "really good" team they can and should do better at the PG position than a guy like Nolen that would be a backup PG on just about any other top 25 team.

Yes. Solid. When you are below average in one category like shooting and are either competent or above average in all the other categories, you qualify as solid. Not spectacular. Not great. Not really good. But solid? Yes definitely.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/22/2011 8:17:07 PM)

Yikes. 5 total points scored in the first 5 minutes.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/22/2011 8:54:29 PM)

For the last play of the half, coming off a timeout no less, could there be a worse idea than Create your own shot, Hoffarber?

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/22/2011 9:49:29 PM)

Man, what a disappointing season, imo.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/22/2011 9:59:02 PM)

This is a really boring close game that I just know is not going to end well for us.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/22/2011 10:00:28 PM)

Cripes...grab the damn rebound. We're gonna lose a game we've lead for an eternity.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/22/2011 10:04:22 PM)

What a hateable team.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/22/2011 10:04:48 PM)

0 FGs the final 4:30.

Unwatchable. I will not give this team any more of my time this season.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/22/2011 10:06:30 PM)

N-I-T

N-I-T

N-I-T

Do these guys ever have a decent play executed off a time out?

Get 2 stops and give up 2 offensive rebounds.   Ugh.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/22/2011 10:11:55 PM)

Their favorite play out of a timeout is letting Hoffarber create his own shot. Every time I see him trying to drive with less than 5 seconds on the shot clock or game clock, I know either a blocked shot or desperation brick is coming.

What the heck was that possession after the last time out.

Someone needed to penetrate.

Instead they went around the arc, Hoffarber gave the dribble up in about 3 seconds, and Armelin panicked and chucked up a crap shot.

As bad as Mbakwe's attempt at a hook shot a couple possessions before.

JT2 -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/22/2011 10:20:13 PM)

Look at the bright side, we "almost won" against Michigan State again. Somehow I got a feeling we're going to hear about how we would have won with Nolen.

JT2 -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/22/2011 10:28:03 PM)

There's a reason we almost won.

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/22/2011 11:39:10 PM)

They started pressing at the end and went on a 14-1 run to end the game. We did not have anyone capable of breaking the press.

Pete M. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/23/2011 12:12:14 AM)

Execution, execution, execution. We simply don't make the little plays that lead to victories in B10 basketball.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/23/2011 12:47:00 AM)

(channeling my inner John McKay .... )

Execution? The Gophers Hoops team? I'm all for it. [:D]

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/23/2011 12:49:37 AM)

I feel bad for you, Pete, I remember a year ago next week, standing in sunny Ft Myers, discussin this team and your hopes.
What's your outlook now, can this ship be righted?
It all started with so much promise, and has gradually slipped into mediocrity. What do you guys who love this team see happening?
Will Tubby stay and work on what's wrong, or is there another big turnover coming?

JT2 -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/23/2011 2:34:17 AM)

Hoffarber is the reason we almost beat Michigan State last night. What? You say that's not true?

Nolen was the reason we almost won at ELansing? That has to be true.

Hoffarber, possibly the most unathletic player in the Big Ten, forced into the PG position and:
1-8, 5 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists and 1 turnover

Nolen, senior PG that was probably better as a freshman than he was as a senior @ Michigan State:
1-4, 4 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 turnovers.

Nolen better defensively against an injured achilles afflicted Lucas.

Hoffarber has zero PG skills (and yes, I will admit he's a better player with a PG on the floor) and he puts up similar numbers as the magic bullet Nolen. How can that be? Hoffarber is the slowest, least athletic guard in the conference, yet he shows almost the same as our seasoned, serviceable, better than average Point Guard?

Man, we would have beat the hell out of MSU if we had Nolen.

The Gophers weren't that good with Nolen, and they are just a touch worse without him.

That just isn't true at all. The Gophers were a top 20 program with major wins over other top 20 programs before Nolen went down. They are now a team that loses to Northwestern.

No response on this? I'm willing to listen.
