We're not better because of it. It sounds like that's what you're trying to say.

No, not at all. We're not better without him, but I see no positive outcome mourning the loss. Play on, coach better, play better. One man's misfortune is another man's opportunity.

You got a towel ready to throw?

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/1/2011 8:14:27 AM)

They'll be better next year (even assuming he's not back) than they would have been as this forces the guards to learn and play 5 man basketball and forces guys like Williams to use their abilities and rebound. That will help in the long-run.

Williams needs this challenge to improve his game.

This team will struggle vs zones unless some guys get more confidence shooting.

Don't like the hesitation in spurts in the offense. Oto needs to do more than think 3's. Bench version of Sampson [&o]

If I'm Tubby I play Ingram some more, too.

Gophs win. Eliason showed me a lot. Like his smart play in the post. Welch needs to go to the bucket more and draw fouls.

Still a horrible zone defense team, but hey, it's a win.

Was at the game last night and couldn't help but be impressed by Eliason. Showed more effort in one game than Sampson has in three years. Agree that he looks like a pretty smart player down low. Not too many mistakes.

Guards and offense in general looked better to me last night than in the past few years -- still bogged down at times, but there was some movement without the ball and guys actually trying to create shots. This team is FAST when it needs to be.

I was thinking along similar lines, as they showed Ralph flat-lined on the sidelines. Mbakwe was into it, but like always, can hardly tell with Sampson.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/1/2011 4:47:37 PM)

Not sure if it means anything but Bobby Knight couldn't stop talking about impressed he was with Eliason.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/1/2011 10:20:00 PM)

I heard that he's got a nasty edge to him.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/2/2011 11:39:31 AM)

Who's got a nasty edge? Eliason? If so, good. A Big 10 big man needs a nasty edge. That's mainly what Sampson is lacking.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/2/2011 1:35:07 PM)

Iverson had it until ... oh... nevermind. [sm=Smoker.gif]

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/2/2011 1:38:08 PM)

Lets play a game ... help me name all the guys who fit "that" mold ... that we've had over the years ...
Dave Winey
Jim Shikenjanski
Jimmy Pete
Kevin Mchale even started as "that"
Colton Iverson
There's tons of 'em, help me out ....

Pete M. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/2/2011 1:44:18 PM)

Trevor Winter
Jeff Hagen

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/2/2011 1:45:54 PM)

There we go ....
thanks Pete
I can see em, just can't remember names.
I watched Trevor Winter play 20 HS games down here. He cost me $50. Bet he'd never see the floor at WA .... geez, was I wrong.
He was the second(or third)-best player on his HS team, fer crissakes. [:D]

Dave E -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/2/2011 2:02:27 PM)

Does Pryzbilla count? In the early days?

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/2/2011 2:03:31 PM)

Oh hell ya.
Even The Big Brew

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/2/2011 2:05:51 PM)

I do realize some of them are before you guys' time. [:D]
Dave Winey is a blast from the way past.
Unreal some of the lineups we had ...
Olberding Landsberger Thompson McHale Williams Behagen Brewer (Jim) Sometimes all at the same time ... unreal.
Muss was a recruiter on roids.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/2/2011 2:15:36 PM)

Ozzy Lockhart Clyde Turner Dave Winfield sigh.

Dave E -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/2/2011 3:14:57 PM)

Really wish the school would flip the bird to the NCAA and retire Bobby Jackson's number. I know he was only here two years, but what a ride. He deserves it for his performance in the Clemson game alone.

Did he graduate? The school doesn't retire numbers for those who didn't graduate. Part of the reason why Willie Burton is finishing up his degree.

According to this Zgoda article from 1997 he was set to graduate later that year. I'm not sure if the scandal affected that or not.

quote:

Jackson--who says he missed out on Division I basketball four years ago because he didn't care about school--points out he has a 3.25 grade-point average and will graduate in July with a degree in sports management.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/3/2011 3:11:38 PM)

I don't know how good of a basketball team USC has, but it's nice to notch another win today. I was among those that feared that the loss of Mbakwe was going to be our demise, but it seems his teammates have stepped up.

JT2 -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/4/2011 12:24:20 AM)

USC scored 36 in a loss at home to Cal Poly. Right now they are a one man show, until Dedmon gets his legs under him. In a word, they suck.

A win is a win. And another win without Mbakwe might make us realize it's a team game.

Williams has matured. He now seems to be aware of what his strengths are.

I'm proud of this team.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/4/2011 9:42:01 AM)

Can someone explain how the NCAA rankings work? We're 8-1 and I went to the site to look up our ranking, and we don't even make the top 25. A team with a 3-2 record and another with a 2-2 record make the list but not a team with an 8-1 record? That sounds completely bogus.

1 Kentucky (46) 6-0 1,599 2
2 Ohio State (17) 6-0 1,564 3
3 Duke (2) 7-0 1,465 6
4 Syracuse 6-0 1,439 5
5 North Carolina 5-1 1,337 1
6 Louisville 5-0 1,259 7
7 Baylor 5-0 1,183 9
8 Connecticut 6-1 1,055 4
9 Wisconsin 6-0 1,045 11
10 Florida 4-1 1,040 10
11 Xavier 4-0 982 12
12 Alabama 7-0 912 13
13 Missouri 6-0 746 21
14 Michigan 5-1 681 15
15 Kansas 3-2 676 14
16 Marquette 5-0 637 16
17 Pittsburgh 5-1 537 17
18 UNLV 7-0 535 NR
19 Gonzaga 4-0 525 19
20 Vanderbilt 5-1 482 18
21 Mississippi State 7-1 277 24
22 Memphis 2-2 269 8
23 Saint Louis 6-0 149 NR
24 California 5-1 121 20
25 Texas A&M 4-1 115 25

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/4/2011 11:00:01 AM)

They do take current health into consideration. And competition. The Gophers may be ranked with an 8-1 record and a healthy Mbakwe. Getting pounded by Dayton doesn't help.

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/4/2011 12:02:13 PM)

It's really not as much about play as expectations, still. Gophers would probably not make a top 35 list at this point since most still see them as a slightly-below .500 Big Ten team.
