On one hand, it's great to give the young guys a taste of success. On the other hand, conference play is going to hit them square in the mouth.

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/11/2011 7:58:18 AM)

You have a very skewed view of what a non-conference schedule should look like. When you flip to ESPN you see them airing UNC/MSU, Duke/Wisconsin, and other such games. Those traditionally garner good ratings. Most games by major conferences are against podunk beat-me-up squads. These games make the school money (they don't have to schedule a home and away) and their opponents are happy to go get beat up by a high-profile school and go home with $100k.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/11/2011 9:12:13 AM)

Maybe Indiana isn't the pushover we were told they are.

My skewed view has nothing to do with it.

The Gophers are THE ONLY team in the Big Ten that will not have played a ranked team prior to conference play.

Teach me more.

Weak ACC matchup and weak tournament field. Look at the field for the tournament next year, pair that with a UNC or somebody in the BT-ACC challenge, and then tell me that they're any different.

Dave E -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/11/2011 2:13:07 PM)

Not saying the Gophers are all that different from other schools -- but no true road games? There's room for some legit criticism here.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/12/2011 9:15:43 AM)

I saw that and thought that it was pretty unusual. It's got to be better for them as students to not have to travel so much until the New Years, but I'm with you about it's being a factor in preparation for the Big 10 schedule.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/14/2011 8:48:24 AM)

Dominating win last night. The Gophers really took it to a quality program in Central Michigan. I remember when they had that guy they called The White Wilt.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/14/2011 9:26:49 AM)

I enjoy watching this group. Welch is improving and providing needed leadership. Coleman is gaining confidence.
Don't care how creampuff this schedule has been. Wins are needed to remove some stink from the MN sports scene.

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/14/2011 9:57:47 AM)

Zeigler is a stud. It's obvious why all the big programs wanted him. Austin Hollins's defense on him was noteworthy, I thought.

Phil Riewer -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/14/2011 11:56:59 AM)

Bucknell 126
SDSU 90
Fairfield 67
Mount St Marys 300
Depaul 143
Indiana St 34
Dayton 24
V Tech 57
USC 170
St. Peters 265
App St 330

Dayton and Indiana St are the toughest on our schedule so far...

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/14/2011 12:37:30 PM)

Are those real-time RPI rankings? Kind of meaningless until conference play starts. You can lose to a bunch of high-majors and look good but then go into conference play and play your mid-major brotheren and even if you win most of them you'll drop. And vice-versa.

What I'm trying to say here is this: sure-fire Final Four team this year.

If you apologized for the Twins like you apologize for the Gophers, you would be..........

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/14/2011 3:26:11 PM)

Nah. This is a very flawed team that I'm hoping will finish middle of the pack and lacks a great (or even very good, now that Mbakwe is gone) player. It's just they are better than Dayton and Indiana State. So is Virginia Tech. So is USC (at least compared to Dayton), despite being a truly bad team.

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/17/2011 7:06:11 PM)

Indiana State, who the Gophers beat, win on the road against a ranked Vanderbilt.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/22/2011 8:18:50 PM)

Some very fitting names on the NDSU roster....Lindberg, Lundberg, Bjorklund and Carlson. Yup, they go to college in Fargo. You can't make it up.

Yeah, ya betchya.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/23/2011 6:43:57 AM)

I get the distinct feeling NoDakers really like playing against the U. [:o]

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/23/2011 8:10:52 AM)

It's NoSackers man.  I'm sure it was a typo [;)]

Bruce Johnson -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/27/2011 7:33:55 PM)

No tv for the Gopher basketball game tonight? Oh. It's probably on the Big Ten Network.

At half time, only one Gopher had more than one bucket and the team is shooting 25%

They weren't prepared for the road noise.

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/27/2011 8:53:54 PM)

Double OT. I need a drink.

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/27/2011 9:15:59 PM)

Bad no call on that Lenord elbow. I've players thrown out with less contact

Pete M. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/27/2011 9:28:36 PM)

Julian had two big chances to seal (or at least a great probability) that game and failed on both. Ugh. Typical Gophers to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory.
