Dave E -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/5/2011 9:38:59 AM)

Our schedule hasn't been particularly strong, either.

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/5/2011 10:48:18 AM)

But Wisconsin has played Kennesaw State, Colgate, Woffard, UM-KC, Bradley, Brigham Young (who isn't good this year), North Carolina, and Marquette. They lost the last 2 but will still be a top 20 team. Perception is everything, unfortunately.

Dave E -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/5/2011 10:51:17 AM)

Agreed. Early in the season, that's fine. Plus, the poll really doesn't matter -- it doesn't have the importance, obviously, of the football polls for determining post-season play.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/5/2011 10:51:47 AM)

panndder - funny I was just coming in here to post that exact same thing. Wisconsin is ranked 9th with a 6-2 record and those are the teams they've played!

Bogus!

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/5/2011 12:17:19 PM)

I'm not concerned by it. The bottom line is that the voters see the Gophers as a team that didn't even go to the NIT tournament last year and lost it's best player to a season ending injury. It's going to take continued wins and some quality ones at that to change that mind set.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/5/2011 12:18:39 PM)

The polls are just that, polls. They are simply a statement of people's (either coaches or writers) perception of a team. There is no method involved, it's pure opinion.

Instead of polls, I like the ratings that actually have some statistics behind them. The Sagarin rating is one.
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/bkt1112.htm

It takes into account schedule strength and it uses two methods of rating, one is simply based of win and loss, the other takes point margin into account, then the overall rating is an average of these two.

In this rating right now Wisconsin is 27. Minnesota is 55. Surprisingly, in this rating, Marquette is the number one team in the nation right now.

Gophers projected Strength of Schedule ranking for the year is 8. So we are sure to see tons of losses with a brutal upcoming schedule.

Is that schedule as of now or year long schedule? I think our guard play is much improved over last year....Welch and Hollins look like the real deals...

Year long, I assume. Almost all Big 10 teams have Top 20 projected strength of schedules. And there's no way the garbage we've played against so far would put us at #8 SOS.

Nice little run, since the big boy went down.
Keep it up, fellas. Nice to see some athletes gettin up and down the floor.

No comparison. Even without Mbakwe the team has more going for it this year.

They're fun to watch. Tubby knows we can't shoot at all, so its nice to see us push the pace and try for easier baskets.

I don't know how well it'll work in Big 10 play, but they've been a pleasant surprise so far.

Somebody, or two somebodies have to step up and start knocking down 3's. Preferably not Williams.

Dave E -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/7/2011 5:21:27 PM)

I doubt Williams will get as many chances anyway at PF. But yes, need someone who can land 3s.

I'm impressed with Williams so far. Playing the four helps his game, but he also seems much more aware of his strengths/weaknesses.
He's going to have to get better at going to the boards. For him to rebound well, he's not going to be able to just rely on his athleticism.

He's also a shotblocking machine at the 4.

And that's where the athleticism comes in.

I really think he has caught the opposition by surprise a little bit in regards to shot blocking.
The conference isn't going to be surprised, but he really is starting to turn into a player.

He is.

He has a chance this year and next to be a special college player at the 4. I think his hopes of ever being an NBA player went away as his wing skills never developed.

Tough spot for him. What's best for his current team, isn't best for his future professional basketball life.

Doesn't appear that Tubby recruits those type players. Hoffbauer was already a commit before his hire

Except I don't think he has it in him to ever develop the wing skills needed for him to be an NBA player.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (12/8/2011 1:22:05 PM)

So you're saying being a Gopher will be the highlight of his basketball career?  We should get him in touch with Rickert so he can get some pointers [:D]

I think you're probably right. That's too bad.
