Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/19/2012 10:04:49 PM)

Hollins and Hollins only 2 having a "subpar" shooting night...as in,the only 2 with 4 minutes to go shooting less than 50%.

Of course, between the 2 of them they've chucked 19 shots.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/19/2012 10:09:21 PM)

Let them shoot, grab the board, use up all of the shot clock.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/19/2012 10:09:45 PM)

William: "Where are all the fans?"

Dad: "It's the NIT, fans don't care any more since they're not in the NCAA tourney."

Dad: "It's U/Miami,where Football and Baseball are still the dominant sports."

Good game for Ingram to get some experience.

And as they were talking him up,he hit the side of the backboard on a desparation shot [&:]

And the Heat ..... [:D]

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/19/2012 10:12:31 PM)

Man, you rarely see this "your bottom 5 against our bottom 5" anymore.
Kinda fun  [&:]

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/19/2012 10:13:34 PM)

Winnable game in the quarters coming up.
We'll see.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/19/2012 10:14:05 PM)

NW got beat

Cannot stand that team. Constantly gives the gophs fits, then folds like a cheap suit vs others.

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/19/2012 10:18:23 PM)

This is the team I waited all year for.

Williams is clearly turning into a stud. Andre Hollins was born to be a stud. Austin Hollins, Eliason, Welch, and Coleman are all very good role players. Ingram, Armelin, and others have shown that they can contribute. Walker should be back next year, and there's a slight chance that Mbakwe may be.

I'm excited.

Biggest thing they need to do with having the posts, is to not have it all focus there.

Mbakwe is more mobile, but still, don't play dump it into the post and stand around ball. Blech.

This is tons more entertaining.

I've said it several times. Just think how good they can be if Coleman and BOTH Hollins improve their outside shooting?

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/20/2012 8:44:34 AM)

I've never seen a team drive down the lane as easily as the Gophers did last night. That must have been some horrid defense, because we didn't do anything like that the rest of the season.

The only time in the Big 10 season that was that e-z was when they played Nebraska.

And the Husker's coach got canned. Tough spot to build a winner, because football is pretty much it.

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/20/2012 9:53:15 AM)

Without RSIII in lineup, we see so much more pace to the game. Eliason doesn't feel he needs to score like RS so ball comes back out quickly.

Haven't heard if Chip has an injury, he hasn't played in last 2 games

Hope I'm not getting to far ahead of myself, but Gophers are ona collision course with Devoe Joseph and the Oregon Ducks

They have fantastic new facilities. They won't be Michigan State or Ohio State, but with the right coach they'll definitely compete in this Conference.

I think Armelin is just an enigma. If the team is struggling to score he's good to put in and see how his circus act works. If the team is running like a well-oiled machine, he's just going to cause issues more than anything. I love his game, and hope he keeps working at playing his style only a bit more in control.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/20/2012 11:01:35 PM)

Washington and Mass make it to the NIT semis tonight.
Washington will take on the Minnesota / MidTenn winner.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/21/2012 6:58:46 PM)

Knew it.
Figured our hot shooting in fla wouldn't follow us north.
Not a great half.
Pick it up boys.

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/21/2012 8:58:28 PM)

This is the team I've been waiting for.

Andre Hollins, Trent Lockett, Rodney Williams, Trevor Mbakwe, Maurice Walker
Julian Welch, Austin Hollins, Elliot Eliason

That's a Final Four type team. No doubt in my mind.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/21/2012 9:48:26 PM)

But if Lockett transfers, he and Mbakwe won't play together. He'll help in 2 years.

BTW, i understand transfer rules, but they sure stink.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/21/2012 10:01:03 PM)

Some of those plays in the final 90 seconds reminded me of why the Gophs are not in the NCAA tournament.

But, by making free throws, they again cemented another win in the NIT and head to NY.

Eliason is still up/down, but a good game tonight. Andre Hollins should have had 30. More control going to the dish. Missed a number of runners.

Guy is explosive, and SHOULD be a scorer.

Williams needs to be more deft with the dribble. In the open court he can sure move to the hoop. Better ball handling and shooting could make very good.

Was a battle, and quite rough at the end. Glad they weathered the storm.

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/21/2012 10:13:28 PM)

Lockett would play right away. He can get a hardship waiver and/or start a graduate program that ASU doesn't offer. He has two ways to get an exception to the regular transfer rule.

That would be very nice.

Depth at shooting guard.

Quality Depth? Wow.

Do you really thing Mbakwe will come back again Patrick?

Has anyone committed for next year for recruits? I imagine they'll have to be pretty decent to not be redshirted.

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/21/2012 10:33:18 PM)

I'm pretty sure he wants to come back if he's given the option, and I'd put the odds of the NCAA granting the waiver at maybe 50:50.

There are two signees for next year, a SG and a PF. Both are promising I think, but they also won't make a huge impact next year.
http://rivals.yahoo.com/minnesota/basketball/recruiting/commitments/2012

This means that all scholarships are booked (lose Sampson and Mbakwe, add Ellenson and Buggs) so who knows on that end, too. My dream scenario is VERY unlikely, but even without Mbakwe and Lockett I think they're poised to surprise next year. Remember, Walker should be back and 100% next season.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/21/2012 10:56:57 PM)

Eliason and Walker should be ok in the post, Williams can play 3 and 4, Oto can also play some 4.

Not sure about surprise. This run should be a launching of good things to come.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/21/2012 11:47:03 PM)

Great win
Nice to see them get to the Big Apple

But ....as Ed noted ......
HORRIBLE last couple minutes.
We made that game close. Horrible decisions, time management, just an overly-jittery team that more often than not ... makes the wrong decisions, imo.
MTU had nothing, really, when you look at them, and they damn-near stole that game yet.
No shooters, no star, all they would have needed was one scorer down the stretch, and we were toast.

We have some nice parts, but they ALL need some Basketball 101, imo.
And 3 guys at one time laying on the floor looking for medical attention? Really?
That calf cramp was pretty cool tho ... never seen one where oyu could watch it happen, then watch it recede.
We do have some athletes, for sure.

I'm not a Tubby hater, but I'm very often surprised how this group of players seem so unprepared/unaware.

I keep hearing that Tubby isn't enjoying himself here. Wouldn't be surprised if he walked away. (to Columbia?)
