Yep, Lynn, it did feel a little better.
They have been unwatchable for a month.
Last night was more of a positive atmosphere, you actually saw people pulling for one another.
Theres been a bad vibe on that team for awhile, hope it's leaving in time for playoffs.
Time for Kangas to get the act back together now.

Jim Frenette -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (3/7/2009 12:54:01 PM)

So waht exactly has happened to this team, losing to Mich Tech?

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (3/7/2009 1:01:21 PM)

I've never seen a team take such a long tumble.
We all knew the #1 ranking was premature early in the year, but there is no way they are THIS bad.
No way. A top recruit or two can let you down, not 10 at a time.
It's just been a brutal downslide and I haven't heard any rumblings.
Not saying I KNOW, just saying, these are 18-22 year-olds.
There is a myriad of issues that can cause problems, from egos to drugs to women to parents to well, you-name-it.
There is simply no "mesh" to this team right now, and they need to figure out why.
Always been a Don-lover, but you can't get the top recruits every year, and not make hay with them at least once every four years.
Its time again.
It was a couple horribly weak goals last night that were the ultimate downfall, but that isn't the problem really .....
A one-win team in the WCHA has to be beaten by a Gopher hockey club, any year, any time, any circumstance.
There is something going on, and it stinks. Badly. It isn't one goal here or there, it's a mind-set.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (3/7/2009 1:04:58 PM)

I've always complained that we let quality kids go to other schools because they are not "blue-chippers"
I'll stick with that.
Our championship teams had some sweet players who were ultra-talented, but the bacon was brought home because we had some ham-and-eggers on the roster. The Koalska-types, the Potulney-types.
You cannot load up on Gretzky-wannabes and win at any level. The game humbles you the higher level you get.
It ain't a pretty game in the WCHA. You need MEN. Not 17-18 yr old phenoms.

Agree completely, Scott. Kessel didn't consistently dominate until he got to the NHL. While it's nice to have those 1st-liners, you need some guys that are willing to be a 3rd-liner for the present and go balls to the wall.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (3/8/2009 8:32:35 AM)

Kangas steps up and shuts out MT.
Much needed, young man.
Home ice in the WCHA playoffs is imperative for this fragile club.
Gather some mo and head forward.

Lynn G. -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (3/13/2009 9:25:12 PM)

Good game tonight!

Any update on what is wrong with Tony Lucia?

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (3/14/2009 7:48:50 AM)

All I heard was the flu, Lynn.
Agreed on the game ... that was an old-style Gopher win.
Toy with us all a little, keep it close, but still have enough to win.
Its a very talented squad, despite their struggles this last half-season.
It shows from time to time. Their first period last night was dominating.
Now, do they keep building on that, or do they get complacent and get caught and passed the next two nights?
Thats what you don't know about this team, how they will respond the next night.
Kangas was better, but still way too antsy. Fought a puck or two.
Good to see some older guys step up and take charge last night, mainly Stoa and Bariball and finally, RJ Anderson.
Means nothing if they don't bring it again tonight, however.

Lynn G. -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (3/14/2009 11:41:58 AM)

Last night was one of those games where they could have won 8-2. So many really good shots on goal, especially early on, and so many opportunities that they made for themselves. The St. Cloud State goalie made a couple of amazing saves that kept them in the game.

Let's hope the pounding wore him out last night and he won't have as much to give tonight. [:D]

Lynn G. -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (3/14/2009 6:13:53 PM)

Good job Gopher Women! They just beat Boston College 4-3.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (3/15/2009 12:06:24 PM)

Happy days are here again, at least for one weekend.
Good performance, actually showed some urgency.
Talent + urgency = results
Kangas was superb. If he is "average" those two games, they lose both.
St Cloud is building a solid club. Love the local guys getting shots there.
They are that grinding, tough bunch of kids who get shafted and doubted but end up being tougher than hell to beat. Like teams like that.
On to the Final 5.
Great freaking year to give my tickets up. [&o] Idiot.
Its as even a Final 5 as there ever has been, and they are usually very even the way it is.
Ahhh, you get what I mean. Look for some barn-burners.
If you ever get the chance, take it in, great atmosphere and the championship is almost always gut-wrenching.

Jason Dorn -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (3/16/2009 5:26:04 PM)

Alive and Ticking...huge play in game against the Dogs, right behind the Gophers in the Pairwise.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (3/17/2009 10:13:18 AM)

It all hinges on Kangas' shoulders.  If he plays like last weekend, we'll move to ST PAUL.

SMF hit the nail on the head.  If he didn't play excellently we would not have advanced last weekend.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (3/19/2009 11:51:37 PM)

Play one period out of three, you lose.
Aggravating night.
I'll be surprised if they get an NCAA bid.
Quite honestly, they don't deserve it.

Lynn G. -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (3/20/2009 8:19:53 AM)

Speaking of the NCAA bid, someone remind me of the controversy last year when Wisconsin got in supposedly because they were hosting the tournament in Madison. It was mentioned on KFAN yesterday, and I remember it a little bit, but I don't recall the details. Did they lose early in the WCHA (like the Gophers just did), but get in anyway just because they were hosting the tournament?

I agree that the Gophers don't really deserve a spot based on their play, although that goalie for UMD was like some kind of Superman! Gophers had a lot of really great shots, but that guy was amazing.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (3/20/2009 9:51:29 AM)

They came out nervous or something.  I didn't see a tape to tape pass in the first.  They settled down a bit as the game wore on but they weren't the Gophers I've seen over the years.  You guys are right, they don't deserve it but they may get the ND football benefit of a doubt.  That cheap rebound that Kangas gave up early really hurt.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (3/20/2009 4:56:03 PM)

Yep Lynn, Wiscky was hosting and the powers that be probably let that influence their decision to get crowds.

And yep, Jeff, the game changed on that weak-ass rebound Kangas gave up early. Shouldn;t have started if you were that weak, kid. Like the heart, but you can't handicap your team.
That early goal laid there and stared at us all night like that creepy pile of money in the Geico commercials.
Denver smothered Wisconsin today, great effort to get a 3-0 win despite missing some top players.
UMD and UND tonight, hope Stalock continues his hot play. LOVE how he plays goalie, it's like having another D-man out there, just a great puck-handler.
Always a great tourney. Once the Gophs are out, it's all ABS for me .... anyone BUT the "Sue".

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (3/20/2009 11:28:59 PM)

Wow, that UND/UMD game tonight was one of the most enjoyable games I've seen in years.
The Bulldogs are playing unbelievably well right now.
Stalock is so much fun to watch. Just a superb goalie right now.
Another night where an early goal just sat there and loomed for a couple periods.
Loved how Duluth took the Sioux's game and shoved it right back at them.
Should be a fun final Saturday night.

Janet Hostetter, Associated Press
Minnesota Duluth players celebrated after defeating Denver 4-0 Saturday night for the WCHA Final Five championship. The Bulldogs became the first team to go from the play-in game to the title.

Huge congrats to the Bulldogs.
First team to ever go from the play-in game to Final Five Champ
They were a team on a mission and I loved every minute of it.
Hungry, hungry team that likes each other.
Alex Stalock had a tournament that will go down in the record books.
Wisconsins win over the Sioux in the third-place game knocks the Gophers out of the NCAA.
Nice effort, Sioux. [&o]

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (3/22/2009 11:20:06 PM)

Gophers don't get a bid, no surprise.
Get back to the drawing table and figure out how to get back to the top, Donny.
Bemidji and UMD are the MN schools in it.
I think you'll see a completely re-vamped Gopher team next season.
Sounds like a couple Juniors are moving on, and if Aaron Schroeder goes in the top 5 of the NHL draft as rumored, he may be gone too.
There will be very good players coming in, but as usual, they will be too young to stay consistent thru the entire WCHA year.
Go Bulldogs!
If Stalock stays hot, they got a shot.

Jason Dorn -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (3/30/2009 9:11:17 AM)

Congrats to Bemidji State on qualifying for the Frozen Four!!!!  Impressive victories.

Nice run by UMD as well.  Whats wrong with the Gophers?

Matt Dahl -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (3/30/2009 9:24:14 AM)

Never thought I'd see the ol' alma mater playing for a DI National Championship! [&:]

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (3/30/2009 12:01:11 PM)

This marks the first time a team from outside one of the big four conferences -- WCHA, CCHA, Hockey East and ECAC -- has made it to the Frozen Four.
The victory could add fuel to Bemidji State's application to leave the four-team College Hockey America and join the WCHA. The school applied for entrance earlier this month, after the conference lifted a ban on expansion that had been in place since Minnesota State Mankato was admitted in 1998. The school also will break ground on a new events center next month.

Incredible, fantastic, story.
Let'em in the WCHA, now.
Mankato/Duluth/St Cloud, and not Bemidji? Why?
If nothing else, split it into West/East, that would make it incredbly fun.
Go Beavers!!!

McMurfy -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (3/31/2009 9:13:48 PM)

Scott, help me out with a little history lesson.
When I left North Dakota, in the mid 80's as a 14 year old, we had the old WCHA
ND,CC,DU,UM,UMD,WIS, and others here and there.
That being said, where did St. Coud St, and Minn St(the old Mankato I think) and also Bemidji St.

Were these Division II, club, NAIA or what?
I never heard anything from these schools hockey wise until the past few years.

What did I miss?

Jeff Jesser -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (4/1/2009 10:03:08 AM)

Going off of memory only so excuse me if I got it wrong but after Northern Michigan joined back up with the CCHA, St Cloud was invited in to the WCHA tourney.  From there they joined officially the next year with State coming the year after (around 1999 or so).  I'm not sure where they came from though...[:o]
