SCSU hired Herb Brooks to coach them and make them into a division I team and then built a new arena

Hey Murf.
They've all taken different (and long and winding roads to the big-time).

Mankato State is closest to my area and a great place to watch a D1 game. usually light crowds and very accessible players and a good clean arena with cheap seats. The hockey program basically started in 1970, playing as an independent against small colleges. Went D2 from '77 to '84, then to D3 from '84 to '92, then back to D3 from '92 to '95 before starting into D1 in '96-'97, when they played one year as a independent, and were allowed to play a strange schedule, consisting of series against 7 D1 schools, 2 D2 schools, 4 D3 schools, and 1 NAIA school.
As was mentioned, they were allowed into the WCHA post-season tourney in '98 as a #10 seed, then full-time into the WCHA the next year.

St Cloud, as Jim said, was guided along by Herbie. They had played D2 and D3 hockey since the 1950's. The WCHA took them in during the '87-'88 season.

Bemidji is just a very cool story right now. They actually have a rich history of small-college hockey forever, as they have won 13 national NCAA hockey championships at various levels below D1. They moved up to D1 in '99, and have been a member of College Hockey America (the CHA)ever since.

Don't quote me on any of the years for sure.
I'm a more-the-merrier guy. Having all these D1 programs in one state is awesome, imo. And as BSU has proven, its not watered-down. There are plenty of hockey players to go around.

Got it guys, thanks for filling in the gaps for me. I'm on board with more teams in the WCHA, especially Minnesota teams...of course I'm still a UND fan though, but will pull for BSU this year.

Okay, I'll admit that I probably don't have a proper appreciation for the whole university history with a nickname and stuff, but hasn't this been something they've been toiling over for about ten years now? About 8 years ago I would have turned to the board of advisors and said "let's just make things easier on everyone and change the name to something cool, but without conflict."

"Fighting Sioux" isn't even a GOOD name! Why put yourself through all of this anxiety to keep it?

The Spirit Lake Tribe in North Dakota recenly voted by an almost 2-1 margin to let University of North Dakota keep its Fighting Sioux nickname.

The state’s board of higher education and the NCAA have agreed that the university has to get the approval of the state’s two largest tribes by Nov. 30, 2010 to keep its nickname or it will drop it.

The other major tribe, the Standing Rock Tribe, has not voted on the issue yet.

Pretty much a done deal.
Great for them.
Great for Minnesota.
Will be interesting to see if they divide into divisons. I would.

Very cool.
I guarantee there are tears flowing when the behind-the-scenes people see that.
That takes soooo much hard work.
To finally be accepted into the big time is a great reward. Good for them.

Not so fast on any of this.  The inclusion of BSU and Ohio State here is for the WOMEN'S hockey team.  The Ohio State MEN are in a different league and may not be able to/may not want to leave.  The search is still on for a 12th team.  If a 12th team cannot be found, BSU will not be added to the WCHA.  The wait continues.

Former Gophers captain Grant Potulny will take over as an interim assistant coach of the University of Minnesota men's hockey team after the departure of one-year assistant Mike Hastings.
Hastings, who came to Minnesota from the Omaha Lancers of the U.S. Hockey League last summer, is leaving to assist new Nebraska-Omaha coach Dean Blais at Omaha.
Blais, a former Gophers star and former head coach at the University of North Dakota, left his job overseeing the Fargo Force of the U.S. Hockey League earlier this month to become head coach of the Mavericks in Omaha.
Potulny, a fixture on two NCAA championship teams as a Gophers forward, was named a volunteer assistant earlier this summer by coach Don Lucia. He will move into Hastings' old job while the Gophers begin a search for a full-time replacement for Hastings.
The Gophers a year ago lost assistant coach Mike Guentzel, who left before taking an assistant job at Colorado College. Minnesota's other full-time assistant is John Hill.

Glad they moved on quickly from a situation that obviously didn't work well.
Potulney should be interesting.
As should Blais be at UNO.

WCHA going up to 12 teams
UN-O and Bemidji added.
Good call.
If its me, I make an East-West or North-South Division.
Hold them back from each other like dogs on a chain, then let them after each other come playoff time.
Seeing too much of each other regular-season doesn't create excitement, imo.

WTF is with this Ness kid???  He was mega  hyped only behind Shroeder last year and he sucks donkey balls.  He's a very natural skaters but anytime there is a chance, or a goal, it's pretty much a guarantee he right there in the middle of the action.

Yep.
Collection of light-in-the-shorts HS Stars as JJ says ....
Every year we go further and further away from the Potulney and Koalska-type grinders, the further away we get from the National Championship.
The Don will be lucky to save his shiny career at this rate.
Looking very Woog-like at this point, get all the big names, barely stay above .500.
NOT GOOD ENOUGH her at the U in hockey. NOT GOOD ENOUGH at all.

Some really compelling hockey at the end of that 3rd period. At least the boys haven't been overmatched tonight, for sure. Unfortunately, I've only caught the last few minutes of the game and now overtime...

Eh, guess you'll have to be content with one point from the weekend. The effort was there tonight, but they had opportunities at the end of the 3rd period to come out with two points and couldn't convert.

We played pretty well, but (as tough as this is for me to say) we just aren't very good.

Looks like Kangas played OK last night. But based on Lucia's comments in the paper the other day, I expect Patterson will play tonight (maybe it's been announced already). We're not scoring goals anyway, so may as well get Patterson some playing time to see what we've got there. I'm fine with them alternating games, hopefully creating a positive competition, and may the best guy win the chance to start the playoff games and keep us at 2-0 or 3-0 losses instead of 6-0.
