Any TV for the game vs New Hampshire tonight? I see it's 0-0 with 4:00 left in the 1st period.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (10/12/2013 7:40:37 PM)

Found it. Fox Sports North Plus.

DISH: 9517 (HD), 447 (SD)

Thank God for the recall button. I'll be checking in with the hockey game during baseball commercials.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (10/12/2013 7:49:46 PM)

Just checking out the national rankings now.

So Wisconsin is supposed to be good, right there with Minnesota. Michigan should be OK. Michigan State and Ohio State look to be at the same level as Mercyhurst. Penn State does not even register. Should they really get their introduction to major college hockey in the Big Ten? I think this 6 team conference is a joke to begin with, but when one team is as bad as Penn State is supposed to be, it's even more of a joke. So the games against Wisconsin and Michigan might mean something. Looks like we'll just roll over the other Big Ten teams. Those games won't prepare us at all for the NCAA tourney.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (10/12/2013 8:05:17 PM)

Nice! Gophers score the second I flipped over to the game. I missed New Hampshire's goal.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (10/12/2013 8:20:08 PM)

Crap...Wilcox looking kinda weak here in the 2nd period. Even though that was on the PP, sort of a weak goal. Maybe more on the defense though. Doesn't look like much energy out there for the Gophers the few times I've flipped over to the game. No aggression towards the puck. Just letting NH control it too much.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (10/12/2013 8:33:12 PM)

Well, I missed whatever happened. But at the end of 2, the Gophers lead 3-2. Just saw a replay of the go-ahead goal. NH goalie choked.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Hockey (10/12/2013 8:41:32 PM)

I've been watching the Wild (up 4-1) and checking the Gopher game now and then. Unfortunately the two games are exactly matched up in that they both have been in intermission at the same time.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Hockey (10/12/2013 9:17:17 PM)

0 for 6 on the power play tonight? Gotta get that fixed.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (10/12/2013 9:23:06 PM)

Yes!! Wilcox saves the day with 7 seconds left!!!

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Hockey (10/12/2013 9:33:24 PM)

That was a scary little flurry at the end. A couple of chances for New Hampshire to tie it up, but whew!

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Hockey (10/13/2013 9:29:00 AM)

You guys need a DVR that has more than one connection [&:]

Flipping back and forth is so 90's. [;)]

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Hockey (10/13/2013 9:31:22 AM)

Jeff - it's outrageous because we used to have picture in picture through our cable network, but when they "upgraded" a year or so ago they took it away. When we asked why they said that it was because not everyone in the network GOT PIP and so to make it fair they discontinued it for everyone.

Commies.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: Gopher Hockey (10/13/2013 6:53:12 PM)

So how do the Gophers look? Is it just a matter of them reloading each year, or do they have a chance to be special this year?

WCHA games weren't preparing us for the tourney the last ten years, either.

Special.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (10/14/2013 11:08:14 AM)

Will be interesting to see the new polls.  With Lowell losing this weekend, I expect a new #1.  Could the Gophers, with a blowout win over a solid opponent, and a close win over an even better opponent, leapfrog all they way to #1?

Bruce Johnson -> RE: Gopher Hockey (10/15/2013 8:52:42 AM)

Here's the latest poll. Gophers are third. Is that Miami of Ohio rated number 1? It would sure be weird for a south Florida team to be #1 in hockey.

Thanks.  Looking at that poll and the others receiving votes, the old WCHA seems much stronger and more balanced than the Big Ten.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (10/15/2013 10:15:06 AM)

I realize the WCHA had its share of doormats.  But a 12-team league is just so much more fun than a 6-team league.

I can see the Big Ten has 3 good teams...or is perceived to have only 3 good teams.

#2 Wisconsin
#3 Minnesota
#5 Michigan

That's some top-end power when half your league is in the national Top 5.  Ohio State would be #38 and Michigan State #39 (tie).

But look at all the old WCHA teams in the Top 20 and receiving votes:

#2 Wisconsin
#3 Minnesota
#6 UND
#11 SCSU
#12 Denver
#18 Mankato
#20 UMD
#22 Alaska-Anchorage
#26 Colorado College
#33 UNO
#35 Michigan Tech

Loaded top to almost bottom.  That means more to me than being loaded 1-3, having a below average 4-5, and a mystery 6.

The good news is we're still gonna have a strong schedule facing some of those teams and adding Notre Dame.  But there's no continuity to the season when you play some of those teams, but not others.  And you can't easily compare how the Gophers are doing with the other teams in the WCHA or mostly the new conference.  I just don't think the WCHA was broken.  I get what the Big Ten is doing, and long-term maybe it's OK.  But you know what's gonna happen.  These other Big Ten teams are gonna throw more money and recruiting into their hockey programs and we'll end up being "have nots" by the time the league expands to 12 or 16 or wherever this is heading.  "We're a smart person school, athletics are secondary."  It's scary where this could head.

Dave E -> RE: Gopher Hockey (10/16/2013 11:16:37 AM)

That's the worst case scenario, but are Big Ten schools really going to dump that much more money into hockey than the Gophers?  I have my doubts.  They won't have the hockey boosters, nor will any other school have the recruiting base we do.

Just because we suck at football...

We'll see.  Hope you're right.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: Gopher Hockey (10/16/2013 9:39:22 PM)

Minnesota vs Wisconsin vs Michigan games will go to another level as a rivalry, I believe. Nevertheless, it won't be the same as Minnesota vs North Dakota for awhile. I don't think there are many fans who are buying into the new hockey Big 10. (now)

Bruce Johnson -> RE: Gopher Hockey (10/21/2013 7:01:32 PM)

We're number one!

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Hockey (10/21/2013 7:25:24 PM)

Yahooey! Now we need to be number 1 at the END of the season too. [:D]

Bruce Johnson -> RE: Gopher Hockey (10/22/2013 4:47:13 PM)

I would love it if we could have a number one team in basketball, too. That would be so cool. Forget about Gopher football- never going to happen again. (I realize that the Gophers rocked about 70-80 years ago.)
