If I were in Vegas I would bet a crap load of money on the Gophers.

I honestly believe the Gophers will not only cover, not only win, but blow Iowa out. I never make homer predictions. In fact often just the opposite. So that's not what this is about. It's just my belief having watched them progress over the last few games last year and carried over this year, combined with Iowa's inconsistent play. And just many elements of the matchup that I believe favor the Gophers.

Gophers by at least two TD's, this will be a statement game.

Okay, I'm convinced. I have elevated that game to my "lock of the day".

Of course I will either be blaming you or thanking you later.

Looks like blame. Barely a quarter in and this one is over.

Nailed it. For 2 quarters anyway. The second half was more the way I thought the whole game would go. Unfortunately the game was over by then.

They came out timid and mistake prone. Happens to a young team I suppose, but they'd better learn from it.

And not to blame Shoretell too much since this was a total team breakdown, but I think any chance of a QB controversy died today. Gray will slip right back in when he's healthy and nobody will protest. The classic 'Backup QB Love Affair' is over.

Yup. He has "Four Year Backup" written all over him.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (9/29/2012 7:27:50 PM)

Gee, kinda seemed like a hornets nest there.
Gee, Iowa was ready to stick it to us.
Sure didn't see that coming. [&o]

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (9/29/2012 7:40:06 PM)

Was actually really disappointed in Kill for the first time. Team came out totally flat and his answer at half time was "we are really young".

I don't care if our teams average age is 4. We were flat and it didn't look like we cared. Almost like "we have 4 already"...coasting from here out cause' it's gravy.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (9/30/2012 5:25:45 AM)

I know we've all got issues with Gray, but we miss his athleticism when he's out.
Shortells issues with the short pass were a red flag, even when we were playing well aginst 'Cuse.
He's not the answer.
Lots of work to do in ALL areas yet.
At least the run D tightened up in the second half.
Can't get too low about this, it was a perfect storm of emotion down there, just have to regroup and keep moving forward.
I heard silly "we could be 7-0 or 8-0 in a couple weeks!" talk ... glad thats over with.
We are what we are ... a definite work in progress.

You hit everything on the head with that post SMF.

Hey man, that's life making bold predictions like I did. You miss and everyone has a laugh and moves on. But when you hit, you're a genius. Standard operating procedure for most psychics.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (10/1/2012 5:30:08 PM)

This week now becomes huge
We will find out if we have
Depth
Heart
Belief
Scary week. We will find out where we are in the stages of building.
C'mon Jerry .... Keep our hopes alive

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (10/1/2012 6:49:05 PM)

Just to echo the sentiments already expressed, this was extremely disappointing. Iowa is not a good team and the Big Ten is not a good conference. Suffice it to say that any thought of a QB controversy is over. Shortell has not gotten the job done whenever the other team has been able to prepare for him. I also don't buy the notion that the receivers weren't getting enough separation. It would be one thing if they were dropping easy passes. The bottom line is that Gray is a play maker and Max isn't.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Football (10/2/2012 9:22:37 AM)

The off week probably comes at a good time. 4-0 start and even though no severe tests, the team gets a positive, confident vibe. But then they get spanked against Iowa, and now the coaching staff has two weeks and use the loss to pound some messages home to these guys.

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Football (10/2/2012 10:09:55 AM)

I agree Shortell had a bad game but I can't put all blame on him. The WR weren't getting separation, and the defense couldn't stop the run to save their life even knowing that is what Iowa does.

This was the bitterly disappointing part for me. By far our biggest issue in the Iowa game. If our D shuts down their running game like they did ours, it's a fairly close game. Shortell was not great, but he was about 60% passing for the game (better than the Iowa QB). I saw the Iowa DB's out-fight our WR's for the ball at least twice. Also disappointing. Our run blocking is just not good enough yet. I see some changes coming there next year (hopefully). Where was Tommy Olson. Didn't see him play?

The good news:
- Gray will be back and Nelson's redshirt remains intact.
- In August, I think almost all of us would have taken 4-1 at this point.

Northwestern: I guess we will find out if we can slow down the pass. I really hope Shabazz is healthy for the game, but doubt it. It appears we are not very good on the road. Lucky, this game (homecoming) is not.

Pete M. -> RE: Gopher Football (10/2/2012 6:15:29 PM)

Tommy Olson didn't make the trip -- he was injured.

Yeah, nothing like making a folk hero out a mediocre running back.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (10/6/2012 3:29:27 PM)

I know, I know ..... this doesn't matter, but  ......
Another tough break for us
Northwestern takes their first loss today, will be pissed off next week and looking to get back on track.
I was hoping they'd come in 6-0 and cocky.
Should be a good game, with two teams looking to prove themselves and get back on track.

Mark Anderson -> RE: Gopher Football (10/6/2012 5:31:53 PM)

Question for anyone here.

Would the NDSU Bison have a respectable record in the Big Ten if they were in the league?

I'm thinking they could beat MN, Iowa & Illinois and maybe hang with PSU, Purdue, Northwestern & Michigan.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (10/6/2012 6:26:42 PM)

No argument here.
I'd say you're probably right on.
They'd "compete" as well as we have ....
I think it would be tougher for them to ever put together one of those magical seasons like NW or Purdue will have from time to time ... but then again, we're not doing that anymore, either.

I'd be surprised if Craig Bohl doesn't get a FBS offer he can't refuse after this year.

The Gophers are going to destroy Northwestern. Count on it. I'm rarely wrong.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (10/12/2012 9:04:29 PM)

Coach Kill keeps bringing up Phil Nelson.
Lets not waste a year, please.
Says Leidner is he only sure redshirt.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Football (10/13/2012 11:03:57 AM)

What's the QB plan today?  Hope to see Gray all game.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Football (10/13/2012 11:04:41 AM)

[X(][X(]  Brutal start.  Fumble the opening kickoff!  [X(]  Way to give 'em at least 3, and likely 7.
