Way to go out, Brock Vereen. You choked.

Karl H -> RE: Gopher Football (12/27/2013 8:59:06 PM)

I dunno, we shouldn't be any worse next year. The QB's can only get better (will Streveler be in the mix?) Offensively we only lose the oft-injured Ed Olson, who played about 1/2 of this game. Our Freshman WR's will be ok I think. Williams is an NFL TE. The main RB's return, plus B. Edwards. Defensively, 'Shede only showed up for about 2 plays tonight. Hill missed key tackles and we can replace Vereen and Shabazz.
I'm confident we can play in another crappy bowl next year. [:-]

MN 3 - Syr 7 at the half. Not a good first half for the Gophers. Thoughts of the Iowa game coming to mind.

Yes poor tackling

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (12/28/2013 9:53:19 AM)

Really disappointed about last night. That was a very average (at best) Cuse team.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Football (12/29/2013 12:49:03 PM)

Did I really hear Jerry and Sid blaming the officials for the bowl game loss? That's what I was getting out of it on my drive to church this morning. I'm so disappointed in that loss. I kinda fell for everything I was hearing about Syracuse being a patsy and the win was a slam dunk. But I did say nothing's a slam dunk for the Gophers. We can't be all that surprised.

Not saying they caused the loss, but they were pretty bad. Gophers got lucky one was reviewed to give them the ball on a fumble. Quite a few more bad calls, but if they tackled better they could have won. Plus at the end of the game on the Hail Mary the receiver was hit in the gut with the pass. That had to be caught

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Football (1/16/2014 4:00:18 PM)

Phil Nelson is transferring. Not good.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (1/16/2014 4:37:08 PM)

Think he saw the writing on the wall after the bowl game. He really didn't move the offense at all in the last 3 games. Leidner looks like he developed enough passing touch at the end and there will be stiff competition from Streveler and the kid who just graduated high school early and is enrolled this spring. I can't remember his name, but they talk like he might be the best of the bunch.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Football (1/16/2014 5:20:09 PM)

Quarterback Philip Nelson told KFAN on Thursday he is leaving the University of Minnesota football team.

Nelson, a sophomore from Mankato, Minn., played in 12 games and started nine during the 2013 season for the Gophers, who finished 8-5 and lost 21-17 to Syracuse in the Texas Bowl.

"I want to thank Coach (Jerry) Kill for the opportunity to play football at the University of Minnesota," Nelson said in a statement. "I have the uttermost respect for Coach Kill and what he's done for this program. I also want to reach out to to all the great Minnesota fans that supported the football program and say thank you. Your effort makes a difference.

"For me, I am looking to play in a system that centers more around the pass game which utilizes my skill sets. I am excited to go out and meet with programs that match up with my talents."

Nelson struggled throwing the ball last fall and ended the season sharing time at quarterback with redshirt freshman Mitchell Leidner.

Nelson finished the season with 1,306 passing yards and nine touchdowns.

"Philip is a terrific young man, and I wish him all the best as he continues his education and football career elsewhere," Kill said in a statement. "I want to thank Philip for the contributions he made to our football program both on and off the field, and I will do anything I can to help him both now and in the future."

Nelson is the second quarterback to leave the Gophers in two years. Max Shortell left after last season.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (1/16/2014 11:36:11 PM)

I hope this isn't red flag stuff.
Anythings possible.
I do know the kid really wanted to play at the U.
I find it hard to believe, knowing his make-up a little bit ... that he'd walk away because of stiff competition ... but you may be right.
One thing Kills offenses are not ... is QB friendly.
He seems to look at them as inter-changeable parts. And often-changeable parts as well.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Football (1/17/2014 6:28:03 AM)

I don't see it as Nelson being afraid of competition. I see it as, he still has a dream of playing post-collegiate football, and he going to follow it by going somewhere he feels will best facilitate that.

Is his dream realistic? I don't know. Unless you count arena ball. At best Nelson will be one of a long line of Gopher QBs who top out at NFL backup level or just below. He's Cory Sauter, Adam Weber, Asad Abdul Kaliq...and he has some developing to go to even get to that point, but it's not impossible.

And you can't blame him for chasing it. You get one shot. And doing it on a team where he was splitting time with another guy, and in a scheme where he had as many rush attempts as pass completions? Easy to see why he's moving on.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Football (1/17/2014 10:10:12 AM)

More of a sentimental loss. Nice local recruit at the time. I remember being upset when they burned his redshirt.

Dave E -> RE: Gopher Football (1/17/2014 10:32:58 AM)

Tend to agree with just about everything written. You hate to see guys leaving, but on the other hand, it is perfectly believable that this just isn't the right fit for him -- and he didn't exactly set the world on fire here.

There is some sepculation that the coaches burned his redshirt last year because they didn't want to burn Leidner's, thinking he might be the better QB long term. I wonder if there's any truth to that.

bstinger -> RE: Gopher Football (1/17/2014 11:49:24 AM)

I preferred Nelson over Leidner for most of the year, but Nelson was horrible in the bowl game. I also prefer sticking with 1 QB unless injury or ineffectiveness demands a change. QB rotations make it tough to develop cohesion and consistency.

Unless Kill told him he didn't have much hope for playing next year I don't like that he jumped ship. Hopefully the new recruits make us forget him quickly, not sure Leidner is the answer.

With the way Jordan Lynch turned out at NIU, I can see this being the case. Leinder's game is much more aiken to that style versus Nelson.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (1/17/2014 1:14:17 PM)

I tend to doubt it for a couple of reasons.

1. Kill was trying to get to a bowl game. I think he went with the guy he thought had the best chance to get him there.
2. Nelson looked like the Kill prototype coming in. He could pass and was athletic enough to run.
3. Leidner came into the program as a pure passer with a big arm. He was considered slow and immobile at QB. It wasn't until he started playing games that they realized how well he could run the ball.

Karl H -> RE: Gopher Football (1/17/2014 4:38:00 PM)

- I think Nelson knew what he was getting into before committing here. At least he should have.
- Other than the OL, Kill typically just plays the best players. I don't always agree, but he seems unconcerned about burning a redshirt.
- Sounds like this decision was in the works for a while. The bowl game was not a big factor.
- Lost in this news is the transfer of Jamal Harbison. He apparently got into Kill's dog house and never really got out. Another WR gone.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (1/24/2014 4:08:44 PM)

Things are looking better and better for Kill's power running game. They got a commitment from 3 star Georia HS RB Rodney Smith. More importantly Washburn RB Jeff Jones (rated 44th best recruit in the country) has cancelled recruiting visits with Florida and Michigan. His coach seems pretty confident that he will sign with the Gophers on national signing day. He says Kill and his staff were on Jones before anyone and built a great relationship with him.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (1/28/2014 10:29:23 AM)

Proud of how well Eric Decker has built a successful career for himself in the NFL.
Hopefully other kids like him see how being at the U doesn't have to limit you.
Really enjoy watching him. Great job on the interviews today. Proud of his Minnesota background.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Football (1/28/2014 11:20:56 AM)

Well put Scott. He's one of the reasons I THINK I'm rooting for Denver on Sunday (haven't 100% decided yet).

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (1/28/2014 12:27:14 PM)

Gophers landed a wide receiver they were recruiting pretty hard, Melvin Holland Jr. out of Virginia and OL Jared Weyler from Ohio. 4 star OL Frank Ragnow from Chanhasson will announce his decision on Friday. Down to the Gophers, Arkansas and Florida State.

Sounds like we had late competition from Wisconsin on Holland. Another big WR (6'3") with decent speed to go along with D. Jones and Wolitarsky. That position is starting to shape up. Now we need a big time QB recruit soon.

I'm cautiously optimistic on Ragnow. He invited everyone to his school on Friday for the signing. Hopefully he won't choose to go out of state with all those locals in the room! Jeff Jones is another huge get if he signs. Looks like it's us or Iowa State. I like our chances there also. If both of those things happen, then we did pretty well in-state.
