Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (10/21/2014 9:36:48 AM)

If the Golden Domers aren't pushed into the top 5 or so by this time each year, it's basically a network travesty.

Consistently overrated program. I used to like them in the "old days". Can't stand them now.

College football is loaded with reputation calls, just like the NBA.

Give me a p'o'd Nick Saban, who is a snake in the grass, and have him rev up a team to kick A&M 57-0, instead of the pretty boy media darlings any day.

I like the Gophs, because they're trying, even tho they don't use much imagination out there. Some day? I won't hold my breath.

As much as I'd like to see it, we are not currently a team deserving of a Rose Bowl appearance.

Deserve's got nothing to do with it. The Rose Bowl would be amazing for this team.

It would be a Cinderella story no doubt.

After looking into it further yesterday, it turns out the Rose Bowl is part of the playoffs this years, so we won't be going unless we're in the Top 4, sorry ain't happening.

The whole discussion that Matt started with his conjecture about us going to the Rose Bowl is moot. However, I think my point still stands that we're not that good, yet.

Dave E -> RE: Gopher Football (10/21/2014 12:01:35 PM)

So once again, Matt builds up our hopes, only to crush them under the overwhelming weight of reality.

So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice.

And I say there's nothing wrong with overachieving and going to a major bowl that we seemingly aren't 'good enough' for. It happens all the time. We're hardly unique there. And it increases exposure and standing of the program, and creates momentum and buzz...yes even if they lose.

Unless you get embarrassed on national TV

Uh-oh

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Football (10/22/2014 10:47:44 AM)

I don't know. Wisconsin lost three Rose Bowls in a row. Has their recruiting suffered?

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (10/22/2014 11:26:18 AM)

Kinda?

They didn't get blown out in any of them either.

Nah. Recruiting-wise, I think getting blown out in a big bowl with a big TV audience still is better than a whole string of respectable showings in the Podunk Bowl in Butthole Louisiana

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (10/22/2014 2:23:33 PM)

Well, you WILL get the guys who look at it and say ... " hell, EVEN I could play THERE right away". [&:]

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Football (10/22/2014 6:14:57 PM)

To me, a team suddenly overachieving and making it to a major bowl only to get blown out sends a message of unfinished business…an up and coming team on the verge, who has knocked on the door and with some additional help will kick the sumbitch in next year. A team habitually traveling to minor bowls gives the impression of a team that has topped out…this is as good as it gets.

I tend to agree.

It says that after 50 years we're finally playing the big boys again.

We saw that in the 1961 Rose Bowl, well some of us, the Gophers lost to Wash and returned for the 1962 Rose Bowl and beat UCLA

The year I was born. I remember it well. I turned my diaper maroon and gold for the occasion.

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Football (10/23/2014 10:30:13 AM)

1961 was the last year for Bobby Bell and he said he would play for the Vikings if drafted by them. Instead he signed with the new AFL Dallas Texans who after a year moved to KC. Carl Eller kept his oath and signed with the Vikings the following year.

kgdabom -> RE: Gopher Football (10/25/2014 10:59:47 AM)

Looking at the standings it is hard to believe what I am seeing. Gophers 3-0 in the Big Ten. 6-1 overall. Playing a NOT GOOD Illinois team should be another victory today. Git r Dun.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (10/25/2014 11:07:07 AM)

Wow, if that's a DQ, I may be out. This game is unwatchable these days.

kgdabom -> RE: Gopher Football (10/25/2014 11:07:15 AM)

They throw him out of the game??????? That didn't even look like it should have been a penalty.

kgdabom -> RE: Gopher Football (10/25/2014 11:08:34 AM)

Hallelujah. They got it right.
