Oh I almost gay-roan-tee an extension.
Five straight bowl games!
Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Claeys can coach defense but offense still just sucks......hopefully it is the QB as it wasn't the running game.

Every couple years, Iowa has a magical season.
Same with Northwestern.
This year its Penn State.

I ask, when the hell is it our turn?

1960 Rose Bowl and Natty Championship.
19 ..... freaking ........ 60

This SHOULD have been that year for us. The schedule isn't going to lay out like this one did very often.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Football (11/28/2016 2:35:16 PM)

KFAN is reporting a contract extension for Claeys and staff.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (11/28/2016 4:33:13 PM)

Is the campus big enough to hold all the 2 stars that will be flocking??

Unbelievable.

I just need to accept that this program will always be garbage and quit wasting my time. [X(]

Steve Lentz -> RE: Gopher Football (11/28/2016 7:09:03 PM)

Editorial in the Omaha World Herald today..

Watch out for Minnesota the next few years. Coach Tracy Claeys' crew reminds me of the good teams Mark Mangino put together at Kansas in the mid-2000s, complete with the take-no-gruff attitude and a tendency to play to the echo of the whistle.

The Gophers led in the third quarter of all four of their losses (Penn State, Iowa, Nebraska and Wisconsin). If this outfit finds a certified playmaker at quarterback, the West Division gets even more interesting.

YIKES!

I was just thinking if Claeys walked in and sat in my living room recruiting.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (11/29/2016 8:36:06 AM)

You know what? I'm going to do a 180 and try and see the positives. This Def can crunch people (detriment at times even with the head shots) and we have a great ground game.

If we can just get average play from the QB we would have been, at least, 10-2. We sure could use some more playmakers on the outside too.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (11/29/2016 10:12:02 AM)

I think part of it is that Claeys and Johnson drew a hard line and decided they were not going to pull the red shirt off of either of their best QB options. They were going to live and die with Mitch Leidner for the year, while they conditioned, practiced and learned.

As to the targeting issue, I think it is proving to be a stupid rule. Out of the 7 called on the Gophers, 3 have proven to be terrible rulings. There are also instances where the Gopher opponents should have been given a targeting penalty with no call being made. So as a result of a network of locally based officiating crews and reputations of the given program, the rule is being applied unevenly and ineffectively.

Actually on board with that too Jeff.
Average QB play would have given us a really good season.
Better than average QB play next year, could make us very interesting.
Who knows if we'll find it, but ....
I do enjoy the way some of our guys get after people.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (12/4/2016 7:26:48 AM)

Extremely refreshing (not sure why) to see a vaunted Wisconsin program crap the bed.
Very Gopher-esque.
Helluva lead to blow.
Their plan of attack once they got the big lead was very similar to what we would do.
Horrific play-calling exists in other places, good to see.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (12/4/2016 8:33:04 AM)

PSU better send ML some flowers or something. [;)]

I hope this is correct, but them taking this big run at a JUCO QB makes me think there's not a lot of confidence in either Green or Croft.

Or, look at it this way. If either of them was really good, they would have played this year. I would hope the coaches could see that we would have had a special year with competent QB play.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (12/4/2016 10:43:24 AM)

I actually think our coaches BELIEVE we got good QB play this year

Yes, as scary as that sounds. I do think that.

I think taking a big run at a JUCO QB has more to do with the realization of how important the position is and how the best teams always cultivate depth at QB. Like Ohio State winning the national championship with their 3rd string QB.

Dec 27 vs Washington State in the Holiday Bowl in San Diego
Pretty sweet location
Used to love that bowl when BYU was going there putting up 50 every year.
Pretty quiet bowl at this point.
Oh well, go win it, for once, please?

The 5 defensive players that were benched for a few games really hurt early----it took Claeys a few weeks to get the young replacements seasoned. To add to that I know the stud TE that Leidner used as his blanket all last year was hurt most of the year (Lingen).

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (12/5/2016 10:15:05 AM)

National Funding Holiday Bowl: Minnesota vs. Washington State
(7 p.m., ESPN, Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego, Calif.)
Both defenses are solid, but quarterback Luke Falk gives Washington State a major advantage over Minnesota, which simply hasn't seen the improvement it needed from veteran signal-caller Mitch Leidner. The Gophers hang around for a half before Falk and his wide receivers start stretching the field. Washington State 37, Minnesota 24.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (12/5/2016 10:19:01 AM)

Good chance we will be "out-QB-ed" again?

Weirddddddddddd

A trip to San Diego in late December. A lot better than some of the other alternatives.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (12/5/2016 11:18:13 AM)

Not sure he would even be interested but I would silently ping Mason to see if he would want to be a consultant (or OC, tbh) moving forward. Even though he's in broadcasting it's fairly obvious he still has a lot of connections/interest in the school.

He had warts but the guy knew how to move the ball.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (12/5/2016 11:19:02 AM)

One caveat to post. I'm not sure my liver could handle the 'mason face' drinking game anymore.

Hear hear.
I'd go begging.
We miss what he was good at.
And as you say .. he loves this place.
Its kinda unfair when you see him doing B10 games ... one guy who does pull for us.

Some days, I'll just squint, tilt my head, and pretend I'm looking at the scoreboard clock .....

Mason could run the ball on anyone....just couldn't coach defense.
