Exactly why I would bring him in as a consultant if he wouldn't take on full duty OC. Let TC's oversee the D and let Mason oversee the O.

Nah, That would make too much sense.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Football (12/5/2016 5:20:15 PM)

Pretty sure Mason is living the good life. No reason for him to come back. His image has been restored here. All he could accomplish in any type of comeback is a tarnishing of that image.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (12/5/2016 6:22:20 PM)

He got run out of town for Funky Brewster. You really think his 'image' is restored? How so? He never coached again.

I have no idea but I would imagine he wants to come back (not here, per se) to show they made a mistake by letting him go (which is obvious BTW).

Once a guy has been away from football coaching that long, you rarely see him get back into it. Whether that's up to the coach himself or the league (if NFL)/colleges depends on the situation. I have no doubt a lot of places would love to hire Mason. In this case, I think the coach has just decided he's done coaching.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (12/6/2016 9:17:14 AM)

I'm sure you're right. Was just throwing it out there.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (12/13/2016 9:26:44 PM)

10 players suspended.

Nice program [&o]

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (12/14/2016 6:28:37 AM)

I repeat, this shit just never ends with this athletic program. Just a perpetual embarrassment.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Football (12/14/2016 9:52:53 AM)

Would they have been suspended if we were in the Final 4 or going to the Rose Bowl?[:D]

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (12/14/2016 10:08:54 AM)

That's the problem Matt. For as much as this goes on, you would think we'd have better teams.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Football (12/14/2016 10:24:49 AM)

This is how I'd like to be about some of our local sports programs, but we can't avoid the headlines.

Ten.
And yeah, we can't even cheat well.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Football (12/14/2016 12:53:54 PM)

The suspended players are defensive backs KiAnte Hardin, Antonio Shenault, Antoine Winfield, Jr., Ray Buford, and Dior Johnson; quarterbacks Seth Green and Mark Williams; running backs Kobe McCrary and Carlton Djam; and defensive end Tamarion Johnson.

If the suspensions continue through the Gophers’ upcoming bowl game against the Washington State Cougars, Minnesota’s defense would be without their starting safety (Winfield) and three of their top four cornerbacks (Hardin, Shenault, Buford) against one of the top passing offenses in the country.

Put simply, this is a disaster for head football coach Tracy Claeys.

According to Darren Wolfson, at least one of the suspended player, if not more, has been recommended for expulsion from the university, but will appeal.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (12/14/2016 1:29:20 PM)

Winfield

Whoops

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (12/14/2016 1:30:56 PM)

With all those guys out

They will get crushed.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (12/14/2016 1:32:39 PM)

Really our strength positions
Ouch

drew -> RE: Gopher Football (12/14/2016 1:49:18 PM)

And Wazzu throws the ball 75 times a game. Against our 4th stringers, this could set some records. Get to Vegas and bet your house on the Cougars before they move the line.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (12/14/2016 1:51:45 PM)

Aw come on
I'm sure our good ol big boy will game plan the crap outta em.

Full confidence!

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (12/14/2016 5:19:52 PM)

Most depressing part is that teams that have this many disciplinary problems are usually there fighting for titles. We have the problems without success. Yeah....us.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Football (12/14/2016 7:28:59 PM)

How embarrassing. And once again - it's an allegation of sexual misconduct.

It's always the misbehavior of a few that makes the whole look bad - but you start to wonder if there are any athletes out there who have a clear idea of what is considered acceptable behavior with women. Does anyone even talk to these young men about that stuff? Parents? Coaches? Mentors? When they are being recruited does the subject EVER come up about what behavior will get them kicked off the team and lose their scholarship (and potentially go to jail?)

Embarrassing but also very depressing.

Let's try something different. Let's be the team going forward that puts character traits right up there with athletic prowess when we recruit for our teams.

I shouldn't lump all athletes into one big bag. After all, you pretty much NEVER hear about female athletes getting investigated for this shit.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (12/14/2016 11:25:16 PM)

Man, Lynn .. same page, same page.
I'm so tired of this ... because I'm obviously not aware of how things have changed.
This type of activity just seems passé' and normal ... I don't get it.
So many of these incidents ... several males, all sexually attacking one or two females ... when did this become the norm?
I'm not ignorant enough to never have heard of threesomes, etc ... but why this "we're all doing it and we're all involved" shit start?
I'm not ignorant or even old fashioned, but its disgusting, imo.
Many times these are young men afraid of homosexuality (supposedly) ... yet hanging your junk out in front of each other is cool, huh?
Sloppy seconds or tenths is cool, huh?
I get more fed up with society each day.

Been saying this for decades.
The Gophers get caught cheating, when they barely are scratching the national conscience.
Everyone else gets caught cheating while hanging banners.
One is much more embarrassing, imo. Cheating is bad enough. Incompetent cheating is just plain embarrassing.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Football (12/15/2016 9:38:40 AM)

This latest deal isn't really cheating though. In fact we're not sure what it is due to the veil of secrecy around it.

The U does a bad job of handling situations like this. I understand that there are privacy issues involved. But I don't think it serves anyone involved to just stonewall it either. In the lack of onformation, people are are going to fill in their own blanks and assume the worst. Also, if they are not forthcoming on the justification of the suspensions, and if they are eventually expelled or whatever further punishment they get, how do we know the players received due process?

We don't. And lawsuits will follow. And it will be dragged through the headlines for far longer than if they would just come clean, say here's what happened, here's what we're doing about it.
