Really starting to lose respect for Jerry Kill. He proclaimed that Fleck inherited a "gold mine" and took a dig at Fleck for calling the Gophers job a rebuild .... except Fleck never said that .... all he said was that at this point you are evaluating what you want to carry over from the existing culture and what to change ... Fleck also said the previous coaching staff did a great job on the field, earned their 9 wins and wants to keep that winning momentum going. I'm really disappointed with how pissy Kill has gotten over protecting his legacy.

On more relevant notes ... The Gophers got a commit from an Ohio OL. The early rankings are giving Fleck a top 15 recruiting class for 2018.

Kill is a sore loser over leaving and having the Sumo-sized coach lose his job.

While the Gophers football team continues to rank in the Top 15 nationally with its 2018 recruiting class, coach P.J. Fleck went back and added bulk to his 2017 class this weekend.

Ben Davis, a 6-4, 275-pound offensive tackle form American River College in Sacramento, Calif., signed with the Gophers. He’ll enroll this summer and be eligible this fall, with four years to play three at Minnesota.

Fleck has said he prefers not to sign junior college players, but the Gophers are staring at a serious depth issue on the offensive line for this fall. Davis can help address that.

The Gophers have been down to five or four offensive linemen for every practice this spring. They have three returning starters recovering from surgery – Jared Weyler, Vincent Calhoun and Garrison Wright. Two others who started last season, Tyler Moore and Connor Mayes, have transferred to other schools.

Davis is in a similar position to Donnell Greene, who came to the Gophers last summer from Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College. Greene played in 13 games for the Gophers last year, starting eight and has been the only healthy returning starter on the line this spring.

I'm starting to get excited about this guy. He's been killing it since he came on board. I sure hope he and his staff can coach and this isn't another Funky Brew type of situation.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (4/10/2017 7:38:01 PM)

Yeah, I just don't see him ever limping out of any room, or any town.
He's the energizer bunny, this time for real (I hope)

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Football (4/13/2017 5:30:16 PM)

Bring an oar to the next rally and they will enshrine it in the new Golden Gophers "row the boat" display forever. It's kind of like buying a brick at US Bank Stadium or a space on the Tradition Wall at Target Field. But this won't cost you any money, as long as you have an old oar somewhere. Great idea! ROW THE BOAT!!

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (4/14/2017 8:35:22 AM)

Fleck got another WR commit. Jornell Manns, WR, Mansfield, Ohio. He also had scholarship offers from Penn State, Kentucky, West Virginia and yechhhh ... Wisconsin.

Strib says Croft was a standout at QB.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (4/15/2017 3:58:13 PM)

I believe it's on BTN at 6 or 630 tonight.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (4/15/2017 4:40:26 PM)

Demry Croft led two touchdown drives and completed eight of 13 passes for 109 yards, highlighting the Gophers spring game on Saturday.

Coach P.J. Fleck used an offense vs. defense format with four 15-minute running quarters. Admission was free at TCF Bank Stadium, and at its peak, there appeared to be about 5,000 people in the seats.

Croft got the first reps at quarterback, with Conor Rhoda going next. Rhoda completed 8 of 12 passes for 70 yards.

Seth Green was 4-for-6 for 36 yards with a touchdown and an interception. True freshman Tanner Morgan was 1-for-6 for 10 yards with a touchdown.

Rodney Smith had a 17-yard touchdown run on the first drive and got the rest of the day off.

Tyler Johnson led all receivers with six catches for 64 yards. Jonathan Femi-Cole led all rushers with eight carries for 75 yards and two touchdowns.

That Seth Green, he's funny. [:D]

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (4/15/2017 4:42:32 PM)

My source said Demry looked great.
Thanks for the stats Ed!
Will have to try and watch it this week.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Football (4/16/2017 8:19:42 AM)

I caught most of it on BTN. From what little information I have, I'm fine with Croft at QB. He looked very poised and confident, like he's a guy on a mission to be the starting QB. That's what you want to see. Not a muddle in the QB competition where at the end you shrug and say ok I guess you're it. You want someone to jump up and take it over.

Long way to go but Croft looks like that guy.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Football (4/16/2017 8:22:52 AM)

I should add, Rhoda looked OK too after a slow start. But he had more of a 'decent backup' vibe to him if you ask me.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (4/16/2017 8:52:59 AM)

Got another OLineman that puts top 10 nationally. No idea how that plays out but you have to admit, it's damn impressive for a first year guy at a school that isn't known for this sort of thing.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Football (4/16/2017 11:46:45 AM)

Pete's kid had his pic taken with a bunch of Gopher football stars. Looked like a great time!

About 5K for the game. zzzzzzzzz

Somehow, Football just isn't a wildly accepted thing at the U, compared to other schools (see steve's note about 78000 at the Nebraska spring game)

Win and they will come.

But honestly I think the fact that we don't draw 78000 for a spring football scrimmage is a sign of this state's sanity.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (4/17/2017 10:10:29 AM)

Gotta agree with that.
20g at a practice? Hey, that's cool, what a great sports town.
80g at a practice? Ummmm, hey, sweet (slowly closes door and drives far away).

There's a fine line between fandom and insanity

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (4/17/2017 10:27:42 AM)

I've read a few articles in both fish wraps that go on and on about what Tyler Johnson is showing right now. Fleck says he has no idea what Tyler's ceiling is, but he knows that Johnson isn't anywhere near it yet.

Steve Lentz -> RE: Gopher Football (4/17/2017 10:51:01 AM)

Ohio State had over 80,000 in attendance, Clemson over 60,000, Michigan over 57,000, Florida, Auburn and Oklahoma had over 42,000. Alabama has gone over 90,000 in previous years. Pretty good programs?

The Spring Game for Nebraska brings in top recruits from all over the nation. It's a huge recruiting tool that resulted in three 4 stars and one 3 star signing this weekend. Sounds like we may get more. Nebraska doesn't have any professional teams to distract them either.
