It's a good thing that these guys are uncomfortable with what's going on. It means they are nervous and based on the momentum, they should be.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (5/6/2017 9:01:18 AM)

It would be one thing if Fleck had almost used up his allotment of scholarships already. Notice that a few of the kids who committed were also being recruited by Iowa. I think Ferentz should shut his pie hole and be happy daddy gave him a job.

So cool.
One of my favorite Gophers ever

Marion Barber Jr. has cried every day for two weeks. Buckets of tears, he said. Different things cause his waterworks, like hearing a certain song or remembering the final conversation he shared with his dying stepfather 40 years ago.

“I can feel my face swelling up like, here it comes again,” Barber said.

These are prideful tears, the kind that flow when a person finally accomplishes a life goal after putting plans on hold for many years.

Barber promised his mother as a teenager that he would graduate from the University of Minnesota.

On Thursday, he will receive his diploma at age 57.

Barber, a former All-Big Ten running back, returned to school two years ago — 36 years after leaving for the NFL — and will participate in graduation ceremonies for the College of Education and Human Development. His degree is in youth studies.

“It’s been a thorn in my side for a lot of years,” he said. “In some regards, I felt like a hypocrite for promoting education with young people and not having the credentials to back what I say.”

Barber first visited campus on a recruiting trip in January 1977. The day before his trip he sat with his stepdad, Thomas, in the hospital. Thomas was dying of cancer. They talked about the importance and value of a Big Ten education.

That was their final conversation. Thomas died a few days later.

Barber set rushing records in a Gophers uniform before being drafted by the New York Jets in 1981. He left school without his degree and life became busy.

He got married and had three sons — all of whom followed his footsteps and played for the Gophers, including Marion III, who also was a star running back and NFL player.

The elder Barber retired from Sysco Foods in 2008 and now works as a special education assistant at Armstrong High, where he also serves as an assistant football coach. He’s a grandfather now, too.

The idea of returning to college always seemed so complicated, even as his wife, Karen, provided a “gentle push” over the years.

“I always found a reason not to do it,” he said.

Things changed once his middle son, Dom, returned to school after an NFL career and earned his degree in 2015 through the Gopher Graduation Program. The Gophers started that program in 2007, becoming one of the first athletic departments nationally to provide financial aid to former athletes as an incentive to complete degrees.

More than 50 former athletes have returned and graduated, and another two dozen are finishing course work.

Barber needed two years of credits to graduate. He earned all A’s except for two B’s and had perfect attendance. He came to campus two to three times per week for class.

“He’s so proud of the perfect attendance,” said Dom, who works on Gophers coach P.J. Fleck’s staff overseeing alumni relations.

Barber’s youngest son, Thomas, is a sophomore linebacker. Father and son took separate classes in the same building this semester, but they never bumped into each other. The elder Barber, however, did share a few classes with football players.

“His teammates usually give him an update [saying], ‘Man, your dad was singing in class, or your dad had another story to tell today,’ ” Barber said.

Dom Barber organized a meet-and-greet between Fleck and former players after Fleck’s hiring. Barber’s father sat in the front row and wore a collared shirt — just as Fleck requires of his current players. He informed Fleck that he wears a collared shirt every day to class because that’s the rule.

“I got a good kick out of that,” Dom said.

Barber jokes that he took a “36-year spring break,” but earning his diploma has left him overcome with emotion. His mother, Mary Ann, is 77 and living in Florida. She can’t attend graduation, but her son already sent her a picture of his cap and gown.

He made good on his promise.

“Coming to Minnesota was one of the greatest things that ever happened to me in my life,” Barber said. “Now completing this degree adds to that list of greatest moments in my life.”

Noah Shannon, a coveted DT from Illinois, commits to Gophers

By Joe Christensen

May 9, 2017 — 5:43pm

The Gophers landed a commitment from another top Illinois defensive lineman Tuesday, when Noah Shannon picked Minnesota.

The 6-2, 270-pound Shannon is finishing up his junior year at Oswego (Ill.) High School and committed to the Gophers after making an unofficial visit. He is a consensus three-star recruit who also had reported offers from Iowa, Michigan State, Iowa State, Kansas State, Arkansas and Missouri, among others.

Shannon made his announcement on Twitter, saying, “I am 100 percent committed to the University of Minnesota.”

The Gophers also have a commitment from Elijah Teague, out of Chicago Marist, who is the highest-rated defensive tackle in Illinois.

With Shannon in the fold, the Gophers now have 14 players committed for their 2018 class.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (5/11/2017 7:40:55 AM)

Uh-oh, another commitment from a kid Iowa was recruiting. Ferentz is probably going to blow a nut. Of course Iowa meant it when they offered him a scholarship and Fleck didn't.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (5/22/2017 2:05:23 PM)

Fleck is going around the state.

Brought his msg to Winona over noon-time today. They posted a 20 minute vid on facebook.

Dude is all fired up just talking to a smaller group.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (5/30/2017 8:25:35 AM)

Uh-oh. Fleck has had two of his early commits now decommit.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (6/1/2017 12:48:14 PM)

They did a great job. One de-committed and went with Michigan. The other still has the Gophers high on his list. I read an article where one the analysts from 247 was quoted as saying that Iowa is getting pretty pissy about the Gophers and Iowa State because for years they have been used to winning those recruiting battles with ease. Now they are losing out on a lot of them and as a result saying some pretty nasty stuff about Minnesota and Iowa State.

Gophers land two more in-state recruits -- Brevyn Spann-Ford and Josh Aune

By Joe Christensen

June 3, 2017 — 8:10am

P.J. Fleck added two in-state players to his 2018 recruiting class late Friday night, when St. Cloud Tech’s Brevyn Spann-Ford and Highland Park’s Josh Aune gave verbal commitments to the Gophers.

Spann-Ford and Aune join Benny Sapp (Eden Prairie) and Logan Richter (Perham) as Minnesota high school players who have committed to be Gophers in this class.

With 14 commitments overall, including 13 three-star recruits, the Gophers sit No. 18 nationally in the latest 247Sports.com composite rankings. They fell a bit with the decommitments of Jalen Mayfield (now committed to Michigan) and Noah Shannon (undecided).

Fleck’s staff held its first camp Friday night at TCF Stadium and subsequently made scholarship offers to Spann-Ford and Aune, who made big impressions during the camp.

Spann-Ford is a 6-6, 230-pound tight end/wide receiver and consensus three-star recruit. He had reported offers from Missouri, Iowa State, West Virginia and North Dakota State, among others.

Aune is a 6-1, 200-pound athlete who profiles as a college safety. Rated as a two-star recruit, he had reported offers from North Dakota State, South Dakota and Montana State, among others. He was featured in this Jim Paulsen story on Minnesotans working to showcase their talent to major college programs.

Two months ago, Aune attended the Nike Chicago combine and rated as the No. 8 overall recruit there among 200-plus prospects, belying his current star ranking. Spann-Ford also ranked among the top 51 players at that event.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (6/5/2017 7:41:42 AM)

Hey if North Dakota State wanted Aune, he must be pretty decent. You know, given how they recruit our kids and come back and kick our asses with them. I remember reading about Aune in the article about Minnesota kids, feeling they are underrated and going to extremes to get on the radars of big schools. Playing in the St.Paul City Conference doesn't really get you in the spotlight. Aune apparently went to Chicago and kicked ass in the combine and followed up with a big showing at Fleck's camp.

Interesting read about Aune. Supposedly a 2 star recruit, but dominating at some pretty high level football camps. I like the sound of both of these recruits.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (6/22/2017 1:38:57 PM)

Now an Ohio LB de-committed from Bowling Green and committed to Minnesota. Fleck is really making in roads in that state.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Football (7/5/2017 11:13:14 AM)

Fleck lost another commit to Iowa. Becoming an ugly trend.

Was this a player Fleck already had committed or just somebody they were both recruiting?

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (7/8/2017 9:03:41 AM)

He withdrew his commitment the U a while ago. Now he picked his new school. This wasn't a new withdrawal.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (7/30/2017 11:41:57 AM)

Fleck picking up momentum again. He picked up a transfer from FSU and 3 high school commits, including the Georgia RB who had previously committed and then decommitted.

Guy works his ass off.
I know its early, but I really think we will see some huge dividends soon.
Appreciated him reading his mean tweets the other day.
I judge people by how well they can or cannot laugh at themselves. He gets it.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (7/30/2017 8:25:31 PM)

It also helped underscore what a blow hard douche Reusse is.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (7/31/2017 11:46:52 PM)

Not the die-hards. Those folks will crawl over broken glass just to high-five Goldy. Fleck wants to reach a broader audience. Attract new fans, or win back those who stopped buying season tickets out of frustration.

“When you haven’t won a championship in 50 years, that can take a toll on a program,” Fleck said. “That can take a toll on a fan base. That can take a toll on how you believe.”

How good are these players? The typical 3 star recruits we get or something better?
