It's because Gonzalez is out for probably 8 weeks.

I agree. Yes he made a mistake, but he was trying to help his team win. Players make poor decisions all the time

The mistake started with the coach not telling him no matter what to take a knee.  In that situation, he should have knelt down.  Not given them the opportunity to strip the ball and take a shot at the win.  He takes a knee, they have the ball at the 20 and can run three plays to run the clock down and punt at worst.  Instead the Pats got the ball in striking distance...and struck.

I agree, it amazes me Dick Jauron is still a head coach in the league.

Do you remember the Dallas meltdown a couple years ago?????

John Childress -> RE: RE:NFL News (9/21/2009 6:27:58 AM)

Around the NFL

The Panthers actually showed some life but with the loss they are already 2 games back in their own division including a loss at one of the leaders.  Atl is not really putting teams away and they may have read their press clippings a little too soon.  Their defense does not look that great.

Packers are in trouble.  They have a line worse than our's yet their coach still wants to pass every down.  The Bungles bounced back from the dead for 1 week.  We will see if they can string together any streak.

Titans are in a surprising 0-2 hole after losing at home to a mediocre team.  The defense will catch heat for a poor performance but Collins choked up down the stretch going 3 and out repeatedly while only down 1 score.

Right when I thought JeMarcus Russell was the worst QB in the NFL he leads them on a game winning drive.  Then again, it was against the Chefs.  The Eagles will get back on the winning track playing these dregs next week.  The great Matt Cassell manages a whole 10 points at home.  Ha

The Jets shut down Brady like he was a chump.  Even Moss looked slow out there - maybe age is finally catching up with him.  The Pats have looked like crap 2 weeks in a row and I doubt they even make the playoffs.  It may take another year for Brady to get back - if he ever does - and by then Moss will really be slowing up.  Sanchez shows rookies can win in this league at QB.

Saints smoked the Eagles and really exposed Asante Samuel for the Jimmy Hitchcock clone that he really is.  Kolb is an INT machine so Garcia or Vick should get a start while McNabb heals.  Brees is unstoppable unless you get pressure.  When the Eagles got pressure he turned the ball over.  When they didn't he carved them up.  Great WRs

The combo of Zorn and Campbell just isn't working in Washington.  Even Troy Aikman said he has no clue what Zorn is trying to do on offense.  Even with them playing like crap they couldn't lose to the Lambs.

AZ got their passing game working finally and the Jags are on the way to getting Del Rio fired.

Seattle went into Sunday supposedly rejuvenated by the Singletarys by the Bay made them look old and slow.  SF will be a force once they add a WR and QB.  Good thing we get them with Hill still at QB and no Crabtree.

The Bills bounced back nicely from a crushing loss.  They may end up better than the Patriots who they all but beat.  TB is on its way to a high draft pick and Tebow or Bradford.

The Bears showed some true grit in stealing one from the Steelers!  Pitt probably wins that game on a FG but the Steelers have to get their run/pass ratio closer to 50.50 if Ben is to survive.  Without a running game, he will get beat up.  I still don't much of the Bears though.

Joe Flacco is a winner and yes I would have given up Jerad Allen to get him.  Allen is a top DE but you can't win in this league without a QB.  Flacco continues to mature and lead his team to wins.  Rivers puts up great stats but I have never liked him.  His 2 picks killed his team.  SD is another team that needs to run more.  The Ravens showed some surprising vulnerability on defense but made the plays when they counted.

The Browns stink.  That leaves Denver a suprising 2-0 in their division but they are not good.  They will not make the playoffs.

The G-men took it to choking dog Romo.  Romo's picks were the difference in this game.  If he protects the football they win going away.  When you run for 250 yards on 8 yards per carry you should win easily.  Couldn't happen to a better sucker.

Week 2

John Childress -> RE: RE:NFL News (9/21/2009 6:53:54 AM)

Lots of guys stepped up and made a lot of plays tonight, and I really cost us this one."

Romo wasn't exaggerating for the sake of team leadership. He cost his team with his decision-making and his execution, both of which defied explanation for much of the game. Despite Dallas pounding out 251 yards on the ground against the Giants' vaunted defensive front, Romo un-did much of the good that the rushing game did with a woeful 13 of 29 passing performance, for 127 yards, one touchdown, three picks and a 29.6 passer rating.

So much for all the attention Romo paid to taking care of the football this offseason and preseason. He reverted back to his sloppy self against the Giants, floating two of his interceptions with passes that made you wonder where he was throwing the ball. Romo's third pick was just as ugly, bouncing off tight end Jason Witten's foot to Giants safety Kenny Phillips. Giants reserve cornerback Bruce Johnson turned Romo's first interception into New York's first touchdown, returning it 34 yards for a 10-7 first-quarter lead.
"We can't win games if I do things like that," said Romo, whose passer rating in the third quarter was an unbelievable 2.8. "I'm just really disappointed in myself right now. You work so hard at something and try to use certain things to change in certain ways. It's disappointing and frustrating. I'm really not OK with it right now. I know I made a couple bad throws. Looking back now, it's stupid. I'll look at myself and figure out why I did those things. I'll be better from here on out."

2. Tell me again why banishing Richard Seymour to Oakland was such a good idea. The Patriots should be 0-2 and would be were it not for Leodis McKelvin.

3. I'm sorry, but New England is demanding way too much of a quarterback coming off a serious knee injury. In two games, Tom Brady has had to throw 100 times -- or 50 times per start. That's not how you treat a recovering patient.

4. If you didn't know it last year, you do now: The Baltimore Ravens have themselves a franchise quarterback. Joe Flacco has five touchdowns through two weeks. A year ago it took him nine games to reach five TDs.

5. You heard it here first: Detroit ends its 19-game losing streak next weekend against Washington.

f. Shawne Merriman is tied for 218th in the NFL in tackles after two games with six. And zero sacks. Dude, there's going to be an APB out on you soon. I mean, Antwan Odom is leading you in sacks right now -- by seven.

Strange how his skills have dropped off so precipitously.  I wonder why he isn't as electric or juiced up as before.

Could be recovery from the injury...could be the lack of other "aids" he isn't using anymore.  Too bad.

Zorn made one of the worst coaching decision I think I've seen this year yesterday.

Up 2 points late, on 4th and one inside the 10, he went for it and they got stuffed.

WTF? A FG gives you a 5 point lead and forces the Rams to score a last second TD to beat you. Instead you give them the chance to win with a FG?

Stupid.

Per a league source, Williamson is expected to miss the rest of the season with an arm injury.  Initially, Williamson was described as probable to return to Sunday's home loss to the Cardinals, despite being in obvious pain.

John Childress -> RE: RE:NFL News (9/21/2009 11:28:00 AM)

Zorn is a brutal head coach.  Week 1 he made similarly bad calls against the G Men.

John Childress -> RE: RE:NFL News (9/21/2009 11:54:10 AM)

Randy Moss was a nonfactor in the Patriots' 16-9 loss Sunday to the Jets, but he refused to give many props to the man who covered him, CB Darrelle Revis.
"All week he was talking about being a shutdown corner, but there really are no shutdown corners in the league because they have help most of the game," Moss said. "I probably could be a shutdown corner if I had (Patriots S Brandon) Meriweather over the top for the whole game. I think I could be a corner."
Moss gave credit to the Jets' entire defense, saying they "did a hell of a job."
The Jets offered a different view, saying Revis neutralized Moss.
"I just covered him any way I could," said Revis, joking that he followed Moss to the bathroom. "When he went to the sidelines and he sat down, I saw right across from him wherever he was sitting on the bench."

If the NFL owners are bluffing regarding their intention to lock out the players come 2011, the NFL owners are doing a great job of it.

According to Liz Mullen of SportsBusiness Journal, some teams are asking high-level employees to take pay cuts of up to 50 percent -- or to agree to termination on short notice -- during the first year that might entail the first weekends without pro football since 1987.

Larry Kennan, Director of the NFL Coaches Association, tells Mullen that the coaches aren't thrilled about being caught in the middle of the dispute between owners and players.

And likely with better field position than if they had scored the FG and kicked off...plus there was more time on the clock...

Completely retarded decision.

Jaguars Receiver Lost For Season
by Adam Caplan of ScoutNFLNetwork.com, September 21, 2009 at 12:37pm ET

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Troy Williamson (shoulder) was injured early during Sunday's loss to the Arizona Cardinals and didn't return to the game. According to a league source, Williamson suffered a torn labrum and will miss the rest of the season. Williamson suffered the injury while trying to recover a fumble.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: RE:NFL News (9/22/2009 1:36:16 PM)

His replacement (don't know his name) is picking up the slack for him.  Did you see ESPN's "Come on man" segment during the post game rundowns?  It's basically the worst plays of the week.  Jags WR was running a post pattern in the end zone, wide open and the ball bounced right of his facemask.  He tried but didn't get a finger on it [&:]

John Childress -> RE: RE:NFL News (9/23/2009 7:48:38 AM)

After 2 games, some interesting stats

* Antwan Odom leading the NFL in sacks by 3 with 7
* Darren Sharper leading the NFL with 3 picks including a 97 yarder for a TD
* Dallas Clark leads all receivers in yards
* No Owens or Moss among the WR leaders
* Baltimore has the #3 offense in the NFL, Tampa Bay is #4!
* With Brett Favre, Berrian, Harvin et al, the Vikings rank 32nd in the NFL in passing yards by a whopping 30 yards per game!
* Tampa Bay has more passing yards per game than Arizona
* Dallas leads NFL in rushing with 16 yards more per game than Vikings and they have averaged 7.0 yards per carry
* Vikings rush defense ranked 15th in NFL
* NY Giants giving up 6.7 yards per rush
* Vikings #5 in passing yards given up and #8 in opposing QB rating
* Saints and Jets 1 and 2 in stopping QBs

We're only going to score 17 points? OK. Is Plax playing defense?
-- Tom Brady, January 2008, laughing at Plaxico Burress' prediction of a 23-17 New York Giants victory over the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.

Since laughing at Plaxico Burress, Tom Brady has played three full NFL games and won one. He has seen the Giants hold his Patriots to 14 points, three below Burress' prediction, and watched David Tyree make a preposterous catch to set up Burress's game-winner. In last season's opener, he tore up his knee and was lost for the year.
He has had a miserable 21 months (except, you know, for that day when he married a supermodel.)
Worse, last week the Patriots lost the kind of game they always win. It was in New York, where they always win, against the Jets, who never win, and after first-year Jets coach Rex Ryan and safety Kerry Rhodes both mouthed off before the game. Normally when people publicly question the Patriots, they are calling a timeout by the third quarter to say uncle.

This time, the Patriots lost, 16-9. They didn't even score a touchdown. Brady's quarterback rating was 53.1.
Brady is still recovering from major knee surgery. Like most people, I expect him to play at a Pro Bowl level again, probably very soon. But I keep thinking: What if he never gets back?

Cowboys receiver Roy Williams doesn't deny being frustrated with his lack of involvement. He was only thrown to four times against the Giants. "Yeah, it's frustrating," Williams said. "I feel like I'm a playmaker. I run my route and hopefully the ball will be there. If not, I move on to the next play, then move on to the next one." Williams said he was not criticizing quarterback Tony Romo and remains confident in Romo to lead the Cowboys and get him the ball.

Hmmmm, the problem was NOT OWENS!

John Childress -> RE: RE:NFL News (9/25/2009 10:07:29 AM)

The Chargers have solid depth at running back, with Darren Sproles and Michael Bennett able to step in.

Safety Kenny Phillips' season with the New York Giants ended just days after the best game of his career.Phillips, who had two interceptions in Sunday night's win over Dallas, was placed on injured reserve by the Giants (2-0) on Thursday because of an unhealthy left knee.
