59-0 with a muffed call on a safety that would have made it 61-0. What happened to the Titans? What happened to Jeff Fisher? What WILL happen to Jeff Fisher? Will he survive the bye week? Titans are 0-6 and were humiliated on national television. Sad.

Kurtis -> RE: NFL News (10/18/2009 6:38:23 PM)

Especially sad to see them get beat like that in they're old school Oilers unis; that used to be my team. Love Ya Blue!

Tim Cady -> RE: NFL News (10/18/2009 8:22:33 PM)

Nice call Dustin, I thought they would win easily, but nothing like that.

djskillz -> RE: NFL News (10/18/2009 9:22:29 PM)

I thought they'd provide a beatdown today, but nothing this big.  I was thinking more like 41-7 or something.

It was funny; two of my buddies (who are Titans fans) were like; "they're not that bad.  this should be a good game."  And I just kind of laughed.  Then I left to go play softball and came back to see the damage.  Wow!

A lot of it really is just schedule.  Their schedule was easy as hell last year and is tough this year.  That makes a ton of difference in the NFL.  Another big part of it is Collins (he's never put together 2 good seasons in a row, and is pretty much done now), and then of course on defense Haynesworth masked a lot of flaws, and now those can't be covered up.  I'm thinking they'll still get 4-5 wins, but it'll be interesting.

John Childress -> RE: NFL News (10/19/2009 9:23:52 AM)

Fisher should be FIRED.  The Titans need a total housecleaning and that even includes my boy Vince Young.  Everyone needs to go.  Letting Haynesworth go is similar to the Browns letting Edwards and Winslow go; it shows you are not serious about winning.

Belichick is a jerk.  I hope someone runs up the score on him.

John Childress -> RE: NFL News (10/19/2009 9:24:18 AM)

We usually start with the winners in this space every Monday, and we'll get to them soon enough. But today, there's something so compelling about the Washington Redskins have to start there.

No less respected a voice than Michael Wilbon blogged last night that this is the most depressing time to be a Redskins follower he's seen in 29 years of living and working in Washington. "I've never seen so many of them looking droopy and depressed than Sunday night following the pathetic 14-6 loss to the Chiefs,'' he wrote. When you play an 0-5 team, at home, a Kansas City team in the midst of the biggest rebuilding project of any in the league, and you generate more three-and-outs (seven) than points (six), it's time to do something. Anything.

And so last night, Redskins vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato met with coach Jim Zorn and asked him (well, asked might be a little kind) to relinquish the play-calling duties. I reported this on NBC last night, and then the team admitted as such, and today I expect the team will announce who exactly the new play-caller is. Smart money around the team last night was two-week-old employee Sherm Lewis, who'd been brought in to consult.

What is really interesting...is that CBS felt that was the biggest matchup of the day and sent their top announcing crew (Nance, Sims) to call that game.  I would have sent them to MN (despite the fact that I'm biased), because no way is any game where a winless team in playing should ever be considered a top game.

We did get Gumbel/Dierdork.  Which is team 2, but still.

Also.  Titans finally pulled a rapidly aging and ineffective Kerry Collins...then we promptly found out why it took so long for them to do so.  Vince Young looked more awful than I thought he could.

At least this time he pulled Brady/Moss and really did try to stop scoring.  If he had left Brady in...I would have sent a few ST guys to nail him late a few times...just to send a message.

John Childress -> RE: NFL News (10/19/2009 9:39:13 AM)

It was 45-0 at halftime.  The Pats took the opening kickoff and threw the ball down the field to make it 52-0

But you could make a case that this more a matter of the Tits being so damn bad

djskillz -> RE: NFL News (10/19/2009 9:43:24 AM)

They really are bad.

I still think they should have held on to Sims, and I think he would have been starting right now.

But even with good QB play, they'd still be a bad team, because anyone on this board could play CB for them right now.

Tim Cady -> RE: NFL News (10/19/2009 12:19:43 PM)

I have no problem with the Patriots beatdown. Tennesse should put on their big boy pants next time. I do not concede anything at halftime in this league. Ask Warren Moon, if you should let up with a huge lead against a backup journeyman qb? Plus with Brady still working the kinks out it was a great time to work on their offense.

Last week I read that through 5 games, Brady's numbers were almost identicle, slightly better in fact, to Peyton Manning's first 5 games last year. Remember that it takes a few games for timing to come back when a qb is coming back from a knee injury.

John Childress -> RE: NFL News (10/19/2009 1:54:31 PM)

Forget the numbers, watch Brady play.  He is not nearly as accurate.

I throw yesterday out because Tenn quit

Do you forget how pathetic Peyton looked most of the game against us last year? He was rusty as hell the first half of last season.

All the more reason for Brady to work on some stuff, the Titans quit anyway so it is probably safer than scrimmaging his own team.

Down 10-3 with 27 seconds left in the first half, McNabb went to the line and called a time out after deciding that he didn't like what he saw on the Raiders' side of the ball. Problem was, the Eagles had already used their customary three time-outs in the half, and no amount of bargaining could get them another one. Philly was busted for delay of game, the ball was pushed back from the Oakland 15 to the Oakland 20, McNabb took a Richard Seymour(notes) sack on the next play, and the Eagles had to settle for a field goal. Had the Eagles scored a touchdown and kicked the extra point in that drive, they would have had the points needed to tie the Raiders.

Of course, McNabb wasn't the only one at fault. He might have had a few other things going on, what with left tackle Jason Peters(notes) suffering a knee injury and giving way to King Dunlap(notes) (who???). And he might have expected that Andy Reid, his beloved head coach, would have left Mac5 a time out late in the half instead of calling two on the previous drive -- both after incomplete passes (which kill the clock, anyway). Of course, when it comes to clock management, Reid won't make anyone's top ten list.

Rams just traded Will Witherspoon to Philadelphia for a 5th rounder. I guess this means Trotter was rustier than they thought.

djskillz -> RE: NFL News (10/20/2009 8:25:45 PM)

Wow.  That seems like a steal, no?

Pretty interesting/funny:

Fisher dons Colts jersey: "I just wanted to feel like a winner" Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on October 20, 2009 5:15 PM ET An 0-6 start has turned Jeff Fisher to the dark side.

The Titans coach had a surprise for former Colts coach Tony Dungy when he introduced Dungy as the keynote speaker at a charity rally Tuesday: Fisher was wearing a Peyton Manning jersey.  And the Nashville Tennessean has the slideshow to prove it.

"I just wanted to feel like a winner," Fisher joked to the crowd, which greeted him with a standing ovation.

The rally was to raise money for a faith-based non-profit youth organization called Rocketown.

UPDATE: For the record, we think it's great Fisher can laugh at himself.  It's sports.  And a charity event.  That attitude might even help turn things around when they aren't going well.

I wish I could have made that luncheon.  I have immense respect for Dungy, and Rocketown is about as cool of a cause/place as there is.

Can you imagine the heat on Moss if he did this?

I have ceased to be surprised by Manny's behavior.

And I have no doubt that Randy Moss would have been crucified for it.

Hey Scott

We agree again!

John Childress -> I guess the problem wasn't TO (10/21/2009 5:44:02 PM)

IRVING, Texas -- Patrick Crayton is willing to say what the Dallas Cowboys coaches wouldn't: He's been replaced in the starting lineup by Miles Austin.
Crayton just wishes somebody would have told him that. He figured it out Monday, when Austin worked opposite Roy Williams in two-wide receiver sets.
Austin continued to get reps with the starters during Wednesday's practice, but Crayton said none of the coaches have explained the situation to him.

“ [image]http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2009/1021/dallas_u_pcraytonts_65.jpg[/image] I would have loved it. It would have been real stand-up. That's not what happened. Oh, well.
” -- Cowboys receiver Patrick Crayton on
not getting an explanation from coaches

"I would have loved it," Crayton said of an explanation from head coach Wade Phillips or offensive coordinator Jason Garrett. "It would have been real stand-up. That's not what happened. Oh, well."

Phillips, however, insisted that Crayton had been informed about the change during a meeting. Phillips, who finally acknowledged Wednesday afternoon that Austin would start, left open the possibility of a one-on-one meeting with Crayton.

"When that comes up, we may do that," said Phillips, who pointed out Crayton could start Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons if Williams' rib injury causes him to miss another game. "We discussed it with him. I have no doubt about that."

Crayton, who dealt with a similar demotion after the Cowboys traded for Williams in the middle of last season, isn't pouting about becoming a No. 3 receiver again. He considers his role "to help in whatever way possible." He just feels that, as a six-year veteran, he deserves an explanation.
"That way you're not in the dark about why the change is made," Crayton said.

It's not as if Crayton didn't see it coming. He knew when Wade Phillips told the media last Monday that Austin would play "50-something" snaps per game on the heels of his franchise-record 250-yard performance. But Crayton wonders how much his admittedly poor performance in Kansas City affected the decision.
"I mean, it's obvious," Phillips said. "[Austin] had 250 yards receiving in one game. We said it all along -- it's hard to say that you're not going to play the guy. I think he deserves to start."

Based on production, one could make the case that Austin (15 catches, 331 yards, three touchdowns) and Crayton (15 catches, 243 yards, one touchdown) should be the starters with Williams (11 catches, 214 yards, one touchdown) relegated to the third receiver role. But, considering Williams' arrival in a blockbuster trade and $9 million per year salary, Crayton knew that wasn't a realistic scenario.

"When you give up a first and third and a sixth and you pay a guy that much," Crayton said, "he's gotta play."

djskillz -> RE: I guess the problem wasn't TO (10/22/2009 8:41:17 AM)

I think TO was a problem, JC, but he was just one of a few.  Romo definitely doesn't perform well in pressure situations it seems.  And their whole offensive philosophy is skewed IMO.  They should be running the ball a LOT more with Marion Barber and passing less IMO.

djskillz -> RE: I guess the problem wasn't TO (10/22/2009 8:42:19 AM)

And I posted this in a couple other threads, but 30for30 on the USFL was fascinating.  I had no idea about that league history and some of the players they had.  Really fun to watch.

Barber, Felix Jones, and Tashard Choice too.

TO was a problem...just not the biggest one.
Romo really is the biggest problem.  He played well for a while, and everyone there thought he was the second coming of Troy Aikman.  He's not the second coming of anything...he's just Romo.  and he's not that good.
