Steve Smith Calls Out Dwayne Jarrett
Mon Apr 21, 2008

AP reports WR Steve Smith wants Carolina Panthers teammate WR Dwayne Jarrett to get his act together. Carolina's three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver was asked Monday if the embattled Jarrett was due for a coming-out party after his disappointing rookie season was followed by an offseason charge of driving by impaired. "You know, the party session is actually over. This is the NFL," Smith said. "You make plays. You're here to play football. You do the party scene at your own discretion, but on Sundays, we're here to play football. If you can't play football, you won't be playing with the Carolina Panthers or any NFL team." "So, this isn't a poke at anybody," he added at a charity golf tournament. "That's just the way it is. You know, you produce, you're in. You don't produce, you're out."

Patriots Still Pursuing Perfection
Despite Super Bowl loss, 18-1 football team wants "19-0" trademarks
http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2008/0421081pats1.html

APRIL 21--Three months after their bid for an undefeated season ended with a Super Bowl loss to the New York Giants, the New England Patriots are continuing to pursue trademarks on the phrases "19-0" and "19-0 The Perfect Season," records show. While the team may have been expected to withdraw its applications after finishing at 18-1, a Patriots lawyer recently amended the original filings to correct a typographical error, a clear indication that the organization remains committed to securing the marks (perhaps Bill Belichick & Co. are anticipating perfection in the 2008 season). On January 17, days before facing the San Diego Chargers in the AFC Championship Game, the Patriots filed the trademark applications, which, if approved, would allow the club to place "19-0" and "19-0 The Perfect Season" on a wide variety of toys, DVDs, clothing, sporting goods, and other knick knacks. As seen below, on April 11 the Patriots tweaked their original United States Patent and Trademark Office filings to correct a misspelling. The team wanted to make it clear that they seek to sell toy banks, not "toy bans."

Bengals Say No Thanks

How serious are the Cincinnati Bengals about not giving in to Chad Johnson's trade demands?

[image]http://assets.espn.go.com/i/nfl/profiles/players/65x90/5483.jpg[/image]
Johnson
Serious enough to swat away an offer from the Washington Redskins that could have netted the Bengals two first-round draft picks, team and league sources said.
The Redskins offered its first-round pick, No. 21 overall, and a conditional third-rounder in 2009 that could escalate to a first rounder if Johnson and the Redskins hit certain performance levels, the sources said.
It was not the first time the Redskins approached the Bengals about a deal, but it was the first significant proposal.
The Bengals have not only rejected the Redskins, but two other NFC East suitors -- the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles -- have been informed that there has been no change in the team's position that Johnson will not be traded.
The Bengals have noted to those suitors that Johnson has been the "second-highest paid receiver" in the NFL during the past three years, indignant about suggestions that Johnson also wants a new contract, the sources said.
Trading Johnson also would mean Cincinnati would take an $8 million salary-cap hit, but that amount could be split over the next two years. Additionally, as one owner who wished to remain anonymous told ESPN.com, "There's nothing wrong with dead money. It's cash already paid and it's cash back in your pocket that you don't have to spend, especially with the [high] amount of everyone's salary cap these days."

So the Patriots want the merchandising rights to something that, to date, they have never achieved.  How typically greedy and arrogant of them.

Damn!  And the Bengals didn't take that?..The Redskins have a history of sucktitude since Daniel Snyder bought the team.  Which means relatively higher drafte picks.  Chad, if healthy will reach the performance levels if they are reasonable.

Mr. Ed -> RE: NFL News (4/22/2008 3:42:38 PM)

Strong words from Marvin on Ocho Cinco From SI.com:

"I've stated our case with Chad," Lewis said. "He has a contract through 2011. He's stated without an opportunity to go to a different team and a new contract, he wasn't going to play. I think he's a man of his word and says he's not going to play, so don't play."
Lewis said the Bengals haven't received a trade offer for Johnson. The club repeatedly has said it won't trade him.

Scott, TM applications usually take close to a year to fully process, so it's really not that weird to get the ball set in motion.  I am curious to see them make another run at it again this year (I really think they will).

Cincy is stupid as heck to turn down that offer for Chad.  I would have taken that in an instant.

Freaking love the Jarrett/Smith thing.  Great stuff.

Tim Cady -> RE: NFL News (4/22/2008 11:57:50 PM)

I love that Marvin and the Bengals are daring MeChad Johnson to back up his talk and sit out the whole season.

They are taking a risk, his value might go down, but this is great for the league to put this self-promoting cancerous teammate in his place. I think they would be better off without him, but it sets such a poor precidence to let players get rewarded for acting like kindergardeners.

The real reason, in my opinion, that MeChad wants out is more about TJ being the man and less about his perception they can't win. He probably could handle being second fiddle in Dallas to an aging TO, he for sure would be the man in Washington. That is where Chad's truth is. He would rather be the #1 guy, but what he doesn't get is his self-promotion probably wears on teammates, more than he could ever comprehend.

He is a smart marketer, but an ignorant teammate.

Yeah, but the Giants showed everyone how to beat them.  And I don't think they will be able to make a run at it.  I will make a prediction here that they wont get to mid season without a loss.

Boldin Requests Trade; Cardinals Say No & Decline Trade Offers
Wed Apr 23, 2008

ESPN reports the Arizona Cardinals have no interest in dealing WR Anquan Boldin, despite trade inquiries from other teams and a trade request by Boldin's agent. "We're not interested in trading Anquan," GM Rod Graves said, according to the Arizona Republic. "That's the short of it." ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported that the Cardinals have declined a trade offer from the Washington Redskins for the five-year veteran. The Philadelphia Eagles also have inquired about Boldin and are dangling CB Lito Sheppard as part of a deal. The Cards are saying no for now. Boldin is reportedly unhappy with his contract after the Cardinals re-signed fellow WR Larry Fitzgerald to a four-year, $40 million deal. The Cards say that they won't re-do Boldin's deal so he's asked out, Mortensen reported. Boldin's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, recently asked the team if it would be willing to trade his client, Cardinals officials said, according to the Republic. The Cardinals said no and don't plan to allow Rosenhaus to seek a trade. "Anquan is a quality person and a great player," Graves said, according to the report. "We're hoping we can agree on a longer-term deal."

NFL | Goodell clarifies position on hair length
Wed, 23 Apr 2008 11:27:29 -0700

Chris Mortensen, of
ESPN.com, reports NFL commissioner Roger Goodell clarified the league's position on the length of players' hair Tuesday, April 22, when he met with the NFL Players Advisory Committee. Goodell said that the NFL's teams are asking players to tuck their hair back into their helmets during games, according to player sources. There is a concern that an excessive amount of hair tucked into the helmet could compromise the integrity of the helmet's protective measures. Goodell said the league will consult with Riddell, the NFL's helmet provider.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- A federal judge denied on Tuesday the NFL's motion that he vacate his earlier ruling that allows suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick to keep $16.5 million in bonuses.
U.S. District Judge David Doty also declined the NFL's motion that he recuse himself from the case. The league had accused him of bias.
Doty had ruled in February that the Falcons would violate the NFL collective bargaining agreement if they tried to recover the roster bonus money Vick already received.
Vick is serving a 23-month prison sentence after pleading guilty to federal charges in a dogfighting operation. After the plea, the Falcons tried to recover about $20 million in bonuses Vick earned from 2004 to 2007. A court-appointed expert concluded last October that the Falcons were entitled to recover the bonuses, but Doty disagreed, saying the team could only recover his signing bonuses.

Titans; Cowboys Agree on Pacman Trade
Wed Apr 23, 2008

ESPN reports the Tennessee Titans have agreed in principle to trade suspended CB/KR Adam "Pacman" Jones to the Dallas Cowboys for a 4th round draft pick in 2008. The Tennessean adds there are also conditions attached to the trade related to Jones being reinstated by the NFL, and how much he plays for the Cowboys. If Jones is available or on injured reserve for 16 games in 2008, the Titans will also get a sixth-round pick from the Cowboys in 2009. Jones doesn't have to play in the games, he just can't be suspended. If the NFL doesn't reinstate Jones, the Titans will send a 2009 draft pick back to the Cowboys. Jones also reached a financial settlement with the Titans in which he must pay $500,000 to a charity chosen by the Titans some time in the next two years. He will receive a new contract from the Cowboys. Jones must pass a physical before the trade will be finalized.

The Eagles are now considering sending their #1 to Miami for Jason Taylor

Tim Cady -> RE: NFL News (4/28/2008 1:57:44 AM)

That would have been good, but they probably did better in their trade with Carolina. Philly got a tweener DE/OLB in like the 6th round, that might turn into a 3rd round pass rusher. They could now make a deal for Taylor, it was obvious from the second Parcells got there that Taylor would be moved. Now they are going to get less for him and now that it was talked about, he won't be there.

Rift Building Between Jason Taylor & Bill Parcells
Mon Apr 28, 2008

The Miami Herald reports Dolphins DE Jason Taylor moved to Hollywood this offseason to pursue a show-business career. He accepted an offer to appear on Dancing With The Stars without really asking Bill Parcells for his opinion or permission. Taylor knew his decision would keep him from Miami's offseason conditioning program, but figuring he always is in shape, he went anyway. Parcells, hired in late December to remedy Miami's seemingly infinite maladies, didn't bother embracing Taylor when he first got the job. The men have had perhaps one 30-second conversation since December. When he heard Taylor was not going to participate in the voluntary offseason program, Parcells was displeased, because, in his eyes, Taylor should be a leader on this team and skipping work is not the kind of leadership anyone wants. That is the foundation of the disconnect between the men. And, unfortunately, there is more than just a foundation to worry about. Two weeks ago, Taylor took a break from his dancing gig and visited the Dolphins. He visited with teammates in the locker room and, after a warm reception, decided to call on Parcells. Taylor walked into a room where Parcells was watching tape, and Parcells ignored him. He looked at Taylor and went back to his work without saying a word. That incensed Taylor. You can argue that Parcells is right to ignore a player who is ignoring Miami's offseason program and has asked to be traded. You can argue that Taylor is right to expect a certain amount of respect after 11 stellar NFL seasons and being ignored is being disrespected. But there is no argument the relationship's little crack is now a sizable fracture. The relationship is such that Taylor wouldn't think of calling Parcells and asking why he wouldn't talk to him two weeks ago. The relationship is such that Parcells apparently sees no need to clear the air with Taylor.

Speedier NFL Draft a Success
Tue Apr 29, 2008

ESPN's John Clayton reports although things might need to be adjusted to help the network television broadcasts, the new, speedier draft in which first-round selections were 10 minutes and second-round picks went in seven minutes was considered a success. That could lead to more changes next year. Seeing that the first round could be completed in about four hours, the league might put the first round on Friday night with the rest of the rounds played out over the weekend. Things moved so quickly Saturday, the draft, which started three hours later at 3 p.m. ET, only had about a half hour of prime-time exposure Saturday evening on the East Coast. The second round was done around 8:30 p.m.

Warren Sapp Calls Out LaMont Jordan
Tue Apr 29, 2008

Yahoo Sports reports retired DT Warren Sapp said that, “after three games last season, RB LaMont Jordan led the NFL in rushing. But LaMont is like the worst offseason running back I've ever been around; he was out of shape and couldn't keep it going. Then, remember late in the season, RB Justin Fargas was slashing and cutting and gaining all those yards? (McFadden) is the same guy, but he's faster. I promise you, this guy will hit those holes and take it to the house, and then our offensive line will slash people up.”

President Bush Believes in Jessica Simpson Jinx
Thu May 1, 2008

AP reports you can add this to the lore of championship ceremonies at the White House: President Bush believes in the Jessica Simpson jinx. Bush, a Texas guy, lauded the New York Giants on Wednesday for winning the Super Bowl. Any football championship is big to the team and its fans, but this one was all the sweeter because it required a riveting, comeback effort against the New England Patriots, who were heavily favored and had not lost all year. The Super Bowl-champion Giants were feted on the south lawn of the White House on Wednesday. The president noted that along the way the Giants vanquished a team from his home state -- the Dallas Cowboys. Many Dallas fans pinned their team's surprise playoff loss not on the Giants, but on Simpson. Seems the singer-actress was accused of being a distraction to her boyfriend, Dallas QB Tony Romo. Apparently, Bush bought in. "I'm a good sport," Bush said at the South Lawn ceremony. "We're going to send Jessica Simpson to the Democrat National Convention."
