    Gene Upshaw Working to Fortify NFLPA Position

    ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports NFL Players Association executive director Gene Upshaw has reached out to former players Trace Armstrong and Robert Smith about rejoining the union in a significant advisory capacity that will strategically fortify his front during unrest within the player ranks and a looming confrontation with NFL owners, sources said Friday. Armstrong is a past president of the NFLPA and Smith served on the union's executive committee before both players retired. Both were active in post-career union committees until they were phased out. Armstrong expressed a willingness to accept Upshaw's invitation, which he said would "not be a full-time job, simply make myself available on an as-needed basis." "Gene and I had a great conversation [Thursday]," Armstrong said. "He's aware of my support for him and the organization. I spent 14 years of my playing career as an active member and officer of the union. So my heart has never left the building and I strongly support the cause of players now and going forward." Smith was unavailable for immediate comment, but other player sources said that Upshaw's moves could create more controversy for the union members who want to accelerate a succession plan for Upshaw's eventual departure as its leader. One player noted that outgoing NFLPA president Troy Vincent, who is considered as an eventual candidate to succeed Upshaw, was instrumental in removing Armstrong and Smith "from the building" during their post-playing days when they served on the agent-disciplinary committee.

The Dallas Morning News reports Tennessee Titans CB Pacman Jones is recovering from a pulled groin. "I had got to a point where I was working out a little too much," Pacman said. "I done pulled my groin, so I took off the last two and a half weeks."

Bengals | Johnson denies Palmer's comments

John Clayton, of ESPN.com, reports Cincinnati Bengals WR Chad Johnson responded to comments made by QB Carson Palmer. Palmer said he spoke with Johnson and said Johnson told him that he would be at the mandatory minicamp in June. Johnson said that wasn't true. "I want to make this very clear," Johnson said. "I don't know where he got that. I made no assertion to Carson that I would do that. Nothing has changed from what I've been saying for three months that I don't want to play for the Bengals."

Updating a previous report, John Clayton, of ESPN.com, reports Cincinnati Bengals WR Chad Johnson said he wants to be traded before the 2008 NFL Draft. Johnson stated that if that does not happen then he wants to be traded as soon as possible. He also stated that he does not intend on reporting to anything, mandatory or voluntary.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports Bengals QB Carson Palmer, speaking for the first time about the release two weeks ago of WR Chris Henry, "You thought it might happen, given his track record. It's too bad. (Henry is) an amazing talent, and to see him throw it away is tough. He's a good-hearted person. It's just too bad." Palmer said he has spoken via phone with WR Chad Johnson, who is skipping the offseason program because of lingering unhappiness with the organization, and Johnson told Palmer that "he'll be there he has to." That would be the mandatory minicamp in mid-June.

I wonder if Drew Rosenhaus is giving his blessing to this behavior? I would guess not, this is too underhanded even for Drew. I think we are dealing with is a guy that might more unstable and bi-polar than even Terrell Owens. Get on the horn to Dallas, maybe the Nati can get one those firsts for him.

If you are the Bengals you can play hardball with Chad, but in the long run it won't do any good, money and value wise. I think, because of Chad we have irreconcilable differences. It is too bad, too, because I think Marvin Lewis deserves better than this. I would classify Chad a cancer for that team, I have felt for a couple of years he hurts  them more than he helps them. TJ was clearly the man last year and that is what is bugging The Chad the most. He is the type of guy that would be happy with all the stats wins optional. He can say he is about winning but his act gets in the way of it.

At least in Dallas he could be 2nd fiddle to an aging TO, with the idea that it is his team after that. Jerry Jones of the 00's is definately the Al Davis of the 70's.

Chad Johnson & Bengals Reach a Stalemate

ESPN's John Clayton reports with WR Chad Johnson's statements about not planning to show up at any Bengals functions this offseason, the battle lines are drawn for a long stalemate between both sides. Johnson wants a trade. The Bengals aren't going to trade him. You can see where this is all heading -- a training camp holdout. Players under contract who miss camp are forced to pay a daily $14,000 fine, but some players have enough money to try to do that. Johnson, with hopes of being traded, will probably go that route. It's going to get worse before it gets better. If you are wondering how Johnson sounded in making his most definitive statements about the Bengals, he was calm and he was rational. In many ways, he was businesslike in his approach. Players asking for trades can be emotional. Johnson's voice was clear and rational. He's serious about his trade demand. But his contract is owned by the Bengals.

IIRC, if the Bengals unload Johnson, the cap hit would be more than they could absorb.  Otherwise, they probably would have traded him by now.

First, the June 1 rule permits the cap charge to be spread over two seasons.  If Johnson is traded or released after June 1, the dead money in 2008 will be considerably smaller, apparently in the neighborhood of $3 million.  He also can be cut now, with the move designated as a post-June 1 transaction. 
Second, since the Bengals would avoid Johnson’s $3 million base salary for 2008 (and his $250,000 workout bonus, which they’ve presumably already been relieved from paying due to his failure to report for voluntary offseason workouts), it’s a wash in 2008 dollars.
Third, any cap hit in 2009 would be offset by $4.75 million in salary and workout bonus that the Bengals wouldn’t have to pay to Johnson.

Except that, against all advice to the contrary, Marvin Lewis went ahead and drafted several head cases, hoping that their talent would overcome their off-the-field issues - which he was well aware of.  So one could argue that he's just owning what he bought.

The first draft Marvin was with the Bengals was the Carson Palmer draft and remember at the time, it appeared Brown was still completely in charge of the draft. I don't know how many questionables you can pin exclusively on Marvin and some were there before and aquired during his first couple of years. That organization was a mess and I think Marvin had to wrestle, to get some control over his first couple of years. He is not the GM. Unless I am mistaken and if it is part of his title, it is show only.

Boy did I get sucked in by the Baltimore beat writer, he lied as good as an NFL GM. Ok Ryan does not get past 8, in fact, he does not get past 5, the way the Cheif fans talk. Although if the Cheifs trade Allen I would think they would take Gholston at 5 and Brohm at 17.

Baltimore should be in the mood to trade down if they want to grab a quarterback or they might just take Brohm at 8.

    AP reports a minor league baseball team has dropped plans to hold a welcome party for QB Michael Vick. The Kansas City T-Bones of the Northern League had planned to have a Michael Vick "Welcome to the Neighborhood" night May 28, complete with prison uniforms, spotlights and escape sirens. Other events promoting caring for animals also were planned. Vick, the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback, is serving a 23-month sentence at the U.S. Penitentiary in nearby Leavenworth after pleading guilty to federal charges related to dogfighting. After receiving complaints about the promotion, the club announced Friday that it will drop the Vick-related events and will focus only on events that promote animal safety and adoptions.

    ESPN reports New York Giants QB Eli Manning married fiancee Abby McGrew in a beachside ceremony on Mexico's Baja Peninsula on Saturday. The New York Daily News reported that the 27-year-old Manning and 24-year-old McGrew exchanged vows before more than 50 of the couple's family and friends gathered for the ceremony at the One&Only Palmilla, a resort along the Sea of Cortez. Manning's parents, Archie and Olivia, and his brothers, Coooper and Indianapolis Colts QB Peyton Manning, were among the guests.



    I forgot his name but the dude that caught the prayer on top of his helmet shoulda been best man.
