President Bush Believes in Jessica Simpson Jinx
Thu May 1, 2008

AP reports you can add this to the lore of championship ceremonies at the White House: President Bush believes in the Jessica Simpson jinx. Bush, a Texas guy, lauded the New York Giants on Wednesday for winning the Super Bowl. Any football championship is big to the team and its fans, but this one was all the sweeter because it required a riveting, comeback effort against the New England Patriots, who were heavily favored and had not lost all year. The Super Bowl-champion Giants were feted on the south lawn of the White House on Wednesday. The president noted that along the way the Giants vanquished a team from his home state -- the Dallas Cowboys. Many Dallas fans pinned their team's surprise playoff loss not on the Giants, but on Simpson. Seems the singer-actress was accused of being a distraction to her boyfriend, Dallas QB Tony Romo. Apparently, Bush bought in. "I'm a good sport," Bush said at the South Lawn ceremony. "We're going to send Jessica Simpson to the Democrat National Convention."

Are you serious?  Everytime Bush opens his mouth more commedians have work.

Jay Cutler Diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes
Fri May 2, 2008

The Denver Post reports Broncos QB Jay Cutler was recently diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, a Broncos source confirmed. While this is the most serious type of diabetes, making Cutler insulin dependent, the Broncos are confident it will not negatively impact his career performance. Cutler has been taking insulin shots since he was diagnosed and has been participating in the Broncos' offseason workout program. Type 1 diabetes means the pancreas stops producing insulin, which is needed to convert food into energy. Cutler will have to monitor his diet, particularly carbohydrates, and continually monitor his blood-sugar levels, but modern medicine allows people to live long and healthy lives with the disease.

Chiefs to Try Out Chris Leak
    Fri May 2, 2008

The Kansas City Star reports the Chiefs will have former Florida QB Chris Leak in for a tryout this weekend. Leak, who was not drafted, signed as a rookie free agent last year with the Bears but was cut before the season. Chiefs HC Herman Edwards said he will view Leak as a quarterback rather than trying to convert him to another position.

I remember lobbying for Chris Leak last year. I liked him better than Troy Smith. Not that Troy Smith is highly thought of on Baltimore, but he did play with some flare at the end of last season and has a chance to start over Boller, while Flacco learns the ropes. Chili can probably have the love he lost in Tyler Thigpen back if he so desires.[&o]

Marvin Harrison investigated in shooting.  Owens, Moss, Harrison...do you think Randy will end up being the cleanest of all of them before this is all done?

I like Leak as well.  IMO there is no way he's not a better QB than Grossman and Orton.

Oh well; good for us.

    Cutler Discusses Recent Diabetes Diagnosis
    Sat May 3, 2008

The Denver Post reports during his press conference Friday to address his recent diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes, Broncos QB Jay Cutler said he showed up at training camp last year weighing 238 pounds and played his last game at around 203. Don't blame the Broncos' medical team. They can't treat what they can't evaluate. As he gradually shed some 35 pounds, Cutler never reported any problem. "Looking back on it I probably should have," he said. "I don't like doctors. I don't like trainers. I tried to stay away from them as much as possible. Looking back, there was some throws where I didn't have a lot of pop behind it. I was able to go out and perform but I just wasn't energetic, I was tired. After games I was completely wiped out. And some games I didn't do a whole lot. There was just something wrong." In his 21-game career, Cutler has completed 62.6 percent of his passes for nearly 4,500 yards with 29 touchdowns, 19 interceptions and an 88.2 passer rating. Not bad for someone who was struggling through the early symptoms of Type 1 diabetes, a condition makes him insulin dependent. Cutler said was diagnosed with the disease on April 15 or 16th. He has since been taking insulin injections about four or five times a day and said his weight is back up to 220. Several Type 1 diabetic athletes have enjoyed productive careers, including former NFL quarterback Wade Wilson, who played 18 seasons and was a Pro Bowler for Minnesota in 1988. Cutler said he would have to monitor his condition before, after and even during games as physical activity tends to lower blood-sugar levels. But the condition is manageable and after a while becomes part of a person's daily routine. "I'm going to be fine," he said. "Obviously, this is a serious, serious disease and I'm going to have it for the rest of my life. It's not going to affect me on the field. I'm going to make some lifestyle changes but I'll be a better quarterback this year than I was last year."

Yes

Owens problems are in the locker room and on the field.

Other than overdosing on pills that is.

Moss' problems seem to stem from other people trying to take advantage of him.

Marvin Harrison always seemed so clean and now he could be involved in a shooting?  Seems so weird.

Another famous Chicago athlete was victimized early Monday morning.

Pittsburgh Steelers first-round draft choice Rashard Mendenhall was robbed at gunpoint while walking along the city's lakefront, his agent and mother said.

The former Illinois running back was with another companion along the South Side walkway when he was robbed of his wallet, phone and cash, sources familiar with the investigation told the Chicago Sun-Times.

"It was obviously a scary moment," his agent Mike McCartney said, according to the Sun-Times. "But he is fine. He is doing great. He said he doesn't have anything that is worth his life."

Reports said the two alleged perpetrators wore black hoodies and ski masks.

"He didn't get hit or anything, he didn't get hurt or anything," Sybil Mendenhall said. "He's fine."
Police spokesman John Mirabelli said a man and a woman were robbed at the lakefront around 2 a.m. Monday by two offenders, but declined to identify the victims. No one was in custody for the crime, he said.

Last year, both New York Knicks center Eddy Curry and then Miami Heat forward Antoine Walker were robbed at gunpoint in their homes.
Mendenhall was taken with the 23rd pick in the first round by Pittsburgh after he set University of Illinois single-season records for rushing yards, touchdowns and points.

Mendenhall played for Niles West High School and is from Skokie, Ill.

Shaun Alexander Completes Visit with Bengals
Mon May 5, 2008

ESPN's John Clayton reports free-agent RB Shaun Alexander's two-day meeting with Cincinnati allowed each side to get to know each other, and it could lead to a signing down the road. The Bengals appear to be pretty well set at running back with RB Rudi Johnson, RB Chris Perry and RB Kenny Watson but injuries happen. Perry has been hurt most of his pro career. By visiting with Alexander, Cincinnati knows he could be one call away if they need him. Alexander will go to New Orleans for a visit Wednesday. There is 50-50 chance of a visit to the Denver Broncos later in the week.

The Bengals would be a sad way to end a nice career.

Reggie Bush Ordered to Testify
Mon May 5, 2008

USA Today reports After months of legal wrangling, New Orleans Saints RB Reggie Bush finally will have to testify under oath about allegations that he received $291,000 in illegal cash and benefits from San Diego businessman and fledgling sports marketer Lloyd Lake. Lake is suing Bush and his parents for reimbursement of the $291,000 he says he gave to Bush, stepfather LaMar Griffin and mother Denise Griffin while Bush was a student-athlete at Southern California. He has already spent several hours telling his side of the story to NCAA investigators. Superior Court Judge Joan Lewis on Friday ordered Bush to give his deposition June 23, LaMar Griffin on June 27 and Denise Griffin on June 30. Lewis denied Bush's request to have armed security at the depositions. Furthermore, Lewis denied Bush's request for his deposition to remain confidential, which means it can be released to the NCAA and the news media. If Bush admits wrongdoing while he was a student-athlete, it could have major repercussions for USC's football program. "We're very pleased the judge put a stop to Bush's ducking and dodging," said Brian Watkins, Lake's lawyer. Lake's deposition is scheduled for June 5 and 6.

Charles Chandler, of the Charlotte Observer, reports Carolina Panthers OG Toniu Fonoti appears fit and said he now weighs 340 pounds, less than he has at anytime since college. Team officials are thrilled with Fonoti and are hoping he has learned from his mistakes. He has made an impression with his dedication in the weight room.

Can you imagine getting DOWN to 340 and having people amazed and impressed?

Didn't Fonoti play for the Vikings for about a minute and a half?

Define "play".

Yes ma'am, he surely did.   But the smart ass in me wants to say "define wear" [:D]

Randy Moss Causing Another Miss USA Scandal?
    Thu May 8, 2008

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports Donald Trump has another Miss USA scandal on his hands. Miss Kentucky USA 2008, Alysha Harris, whose Facebook says she's only 20, was photographed partying and bumping and grinding with New England Patriots WR Randy Moss at the Kentucky Derby. Harris competed last month. Trump gave former Miss USA Tara Conner a second chance more than a year ago after her underage partying and other inappropriate behavior. Las Vegan Katie Rees had her Miss Nevada USA title taken away in December 2006 after scandalous photographs surfaced.
