So much for Mike Williams making the most of a third opportunity. The Titans released him Thursday, adding another disappointing chapter to the once-heralded receiver's NFL career. "It was a combination of things we weren't getting from him. There were too many drops. We just didn't see improvement,'' Coach Jeff Fisher said. "He's had potential. He still has potential. Maybe he'll realize it someplace else.'' Despite losing roughly 30 pounds and getting into better shape earlier this offseason, Williams was unable to move very far into the receiver rotation. His conditioning and weight remained issues as training camp progressed. "It may be a message that coaches are serious, the organization is serious and they want people that are going to work and compete and take their jobs serious,'' linebacker Keith Bulluck said. It's the third failed stint for Williams in the NFL. A first-round pick by the Lions in 2005, Williams was traded to the Raiders last year. Oakland released him in late October and shortly thereafter he signed with the Titans. He saw action in two games for Tennessee but did not have a reception. Earlier this offseason, coaches were optimistic Williams might be on the verge of realizing some of the high expectations he carried into the NFL after a stellar career at Southern California. But his first week of training camp turned out to be like his work in organized team activities in May and June — inconsistent. This week he got behind the defense only to drop a pass that landed in his hands. In many practices he was almost invisible. "No disrespect to Mike Williams, I love Mike Williams, but he is going to have show people that he is really serious about playing football,'' said running back LenDale White, who was a teammate of Williams at USC. "Unfortunately, they might be talking about him like Ryan Leaf as one of the worst draft decisions.''
