But I got to thinking about it later and I realized that one of the sad side affects of sports is that it can bring out the worst in us. I know I'm entirely guilty of that sometimes too - saying things that I would never otherwise think of saying (or posting things that I would never otherwise think of posting) if it weren't for the crazy affiliation we have for our sports teams.

Tell everyone here you wouldn't at least cheer silently to yourself if Favre went down in injury. A co-worker was at the GB/MN game at the Metrodome this year. One of the Viqueens fans screamed to her, "I hope Brett Favre gets cancer!" Is that "classless?"

I never cheer for any player to get a serious injury. If you knock the wind out of a guy on a clean hit that is fine. But I would not want Favre to get a career threatening injury.

I'm gonna re-post my message from earlier because it got buried in another thread: This isn't the playground at kindergarten. This is football. If you can't take a good ribbing from your rival team's fans, maybe you should find another pasttime. I'd fully expect to be ribbed by Vikings fans had the score been reversed. Keep in mind that the Pack were humiliated by the Queens in that playoff game a couple years ago, and many people keep bringing that up. I'd expect them to. The one playoff game between these bitter rivals was a horrible game for us. Furthermore, talking a little sh*t between Packers and Vikings fans is part of what makes the rivalry enjoyable (and what makes it a rivalry to begin with). Why do Packers fans hate the Vikings and vice versa? For one thing, many, many years of competitive play have created a very loyal fanbase on both sides. We've seen very good teams from both GB and MN over the years. Fans are proud of their teams, and should be -- the NFL wouldn't exist w/o the fans. And when two good teams face off, the fans are gonna stand up for their teams.

Now, of course I would never condone what some bastard at Lambeau said to you. That is clearly uncalled for. I wouldn't hesitate to tell an usher about it. Anyone says that to my wife and I'll take care of it properly. However, I hope you didn't take it personally. In fact, one time at Lambeau I was shoved in the bleachers by some Packers fan degenerate because I didn't take my hat off during the national anthem. So there we've got fans of the same team ripping each other. It can be very intimidating. I'm not the type who's gonna scream back or do anything to feed that situation. My grandma has told us stories about going to Lambeau in the 60s during the Lombardi years and getting beer poured on her head (by PACKERS fans). So yes, they're rowdy. But this is a rowdy sport.

David, You make good points. And I'll add that the only fans that I saw being removed from the game were a couple of Packer fans. My biggest irritation is that (on another board) I was told for YEARS that Packer fans were the most gracious hosts in the NFL. That they were the best fans and that they never left a game early (I've seen otherwise), that they treat visiting fans with courtesy (I've seen otherwise) and that they support their team and their players through thick and thin (I've seen otherwise). I just felt the need to vent about my experience, but I don't claim that it was a definitive experience nor is it something that would only happen at Lambeau. I just resent having had that image shoved in my face when it's just plain not true.

The only measure I have to judge whether Packers fans support their team is the season ticket situation. The list is over 70,000 names long. I've read several places that every Packers home game since 1958 has sold out. That says something -- but make of it what you will.

I find the intimation rather lacking in ...well, truth for one thing. Milwaukee is filled with Pack fans of all stripes. I have seats in section 129 and the african american couple sitting 2 seats down from me informed me that they had a great time, other than the outcome, as they were Viking fans. I certainly will not claim that incidents of base behavior are nonexistent at Lambeau but as a fan who has traveled literally all over the league, I'll bet opposing team's fans are treated with more respect than at most, if not all, NFL stadiums. When one walks into the stadium of a hated rival wearing one's colors, I think it is somewhat naive to believe that there isn't some drunk fool in each of the 32 NFL cities ready to ruin one's day. If I were to come to this board posting inflammatory anti Viking rhetoric I'm certain someone is out there ready to attack and I think there is a comparison there. If you were threatened at all physically I'd retract that. I would like to believe that wearing your team's colors into Lambeau would result only in some verbal jousting but in today's world it seems rather naive to be so taken aback that you found one of the inexcusable fools. I apologize sincerely as a Packer season ticket holder and hope you decide to return.

The attendance at Lambeau yesterday was 70,945, a record for the stadium. There is no way anyone could make a judgment as to how many people of color were there. Besides, I find the following of professional sports to be mainly a white, middle- to upper-class pursuit. Especially for the NFL, you've gotta be off work every Sunday to watch games. And we know there's an income disparity between whites and blacks in this country. Lower income people tend to work more hours, weekends, nights, etc. Additionally, you typically need serious disposable income to afford an NFL game. Ticket prices are commonly in the hundreds of dollars. Regardless of colour, there aren't going to be many lower income people at any game.
