Look at Geno Smith - there's a guy who really should've spent a year on the bench.

What good would that really do. Let's say he sits on the bench this year, and then next year has a year like he did this year, then he is a year behind in learning. I think you're better off getting them on the field and playing.

And some benefit by watching and learning from a very good QB in front of them...like Tom Brady watching Drew Bledsoe, or Aaron Rodgers watching Brett Favre....

Some guys are ready from the start, others would benefit from sitting for a year and learning.

I think Archie was a pretty good QB (much better than Carr), and Eli has been pretty good in the post season.

I think it's likely that David Carr is the WORSE brother. From what I've seen, I'd only gamble on him in the 3rd round or later.

I seriously doubt he lasts that long.

Some are now ranking Carr ahead of Bridgewater.

I've watched both I was pleasantly suprised by Carr. He looks smooth.

I think Bridgewater hurt his stock this year, he was very mediocre against any sort of competition.

Bill Jandro -> RE: College Football (Future Vikings!) (12/16/2013 4:59:50 PM)

Carr in the 3rd rd.

Cmon Marty. Most Mocks have him top 10 and some top 5.

Players drop for a reason and its usually character flaws or a poor combine performance

Its way too early to start downgrading players. Especially cuz their brother was no good or his father beat his mother or whatever.

Not to say Carr doesn't have warts...but he does seem to release quickly, and is willing to throw into coverage...which is what they might call "open" in the NFL.  He's not afraid to stick it in there.

marty -> RE: College Football (Future Vikings!) (12/17/2013 7:44:32 PM)

I haven't seen a lot of film on both, but from what I've seen, Blake Bortles looks more impressive than Carr.

Mayock and Bob Griese just gush about the kid

Gonna have to take in both Fresno and CFU bowl games and get a good look at both prospects. Some Margaritas would help

Drinking while scouting??? Do you work for the Vikings?

Good one. You made me chuckle

Geno Smith was simply not ready

The good games are the flashes but I don't think it helps to have him with 4 and 5 turnover games

That is not good

Not every QB is Andrew Luck or Peyton Manning

Again, beware of the Akili Smith factor

Bridgewater faced better comp and national scrutiny all year long

Carr comes out of nowhere, never played a good team, and all of a sudden he is the best QB prospect?

I see major bust on him, just like his brother

I wish Bridgewater would have played in the SEC. The AAC is not really a power conference.

Not sure how much to take from how Carr does in his bowl game vs USC, but at least he'll be playing a higher degree of athlete in this game.

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: College Football (Future Vikings!) (12/21/2013 10:35:30 AM)

Colin Kapernick played the exact same "nobody" teams at nevada that Carr has, when he was at Fresno.

Kapernick never managed to lead his team to victory against a rated opponent, except Baoise State in 2010.

In 4 years as "the man", Kapernick had 10,098 yards and had 82 td and 24 ints and a rating of 142.5.. not bad numbers, granted.

Derek carr has 2 years as "the man" against the almost identical level of competition as Kapernick, even down to the same teams, and in 2 years as the starter, had 7,760 yards and 63 TD's and 16 int's and a rating of 150.4. none too shabby either.

If Kapernick can be successful in the NFL after playing "inferior" opponents, Carr could be as well.. and seeing as Bridgewater is never, ever going to make it to the Vikings as QBOTF, Carr is not a bad option to consider, if people could manage to understand that Derek Carrr IS NOT David Carr.

Comparing Derek and David is apples to oranges.

who has more SB wins? Archie, Peyton, or Eli?

You can't make blanket statements and judgements based on family name.

well, you CAN, but it's less than smart, by a lot.

Spot on Danno

Ed_Marotske -> RE: College Football (Future Vikings!) (12/21/2013 4:04:33 PM)

I posted my support for Carr few weeks ago and some people on here were squarely against that pick. I'm not saying Carr is going to be a super star NFL QB, but he sure has shown enough to be in the conversation. I've watched him a few times this season and have come away impressed.

That being said, if there is one sure thing in the NFL draft....nobody is a sure thing. Sure, you get some kids like Luck or Cam who project high and meet the mark...but you have more that project high and either become decent or they completely wash out. Its a crap shoot at best.

Last night I was at a friends house and there was a conversation about RGIII. One of the guys was adamant that RGIII was a huge bust. I asked him why he thought that? He stated he was injury prone and would never complete a season. Said he didn't have any arm strength. Said his first year was a fluke. So, I asked him about Cam's second season measuring up to his rookie year. Sure, Cam had better stats than RGIII this season, but it was a pretty hefty drop from his rookie year. (I'd have to look up the stats) After explaining to him that RGIII was rushed back from injury and probably wasn't healthy all season, and defenses were able to figure him out a little (same as Cam) and it comes down to RGIII and his coaches to make adjustments for RGIII going into this next season.....much like Carolina did with Cam. I'd take RGIII if we had a decent coaching staff in a heartbeat. Coach that kid up right and I think he has a real chance to be great. Just my opinion.....Was a nice debate last night. As soon as I changed the subject to Cordarell Patterson I was like their best friend. LOL I had a little bit of a problem with one of the guys saying he was slow.....but for the most part we all agreed he's going to be something special.

JT2 -> RE: College Football (Future Vikings!) (12/21/2013 4:33:41 PM)

Carr is looking pretty awful so far today.

Guest -> RE: College Football (Future Vikings!) (12/21/2013 4:49:37 PM)

Agree with Pete to this point, I know it's the only game I've watched Carr play, but you really have to watch it to truly realize how crappy Carr looks. FWIW.

It appears it's another in the long line of horrid future pros that Brad loved coming out.

John Childress -> RE: College Football (Future Vikings!) (12/21/2013 4:52:30 PM)

Ed

You know you are my hero, but I have to disagree about Cam

He didn't have any 2nd year dropoff like folks say

He went from 21 tD passes to 19

He had 3,869 yards passing last year
He also had 741 yards rushing last year - 35 MORE than his rookie year

His QB rating went UP his 2nd year

People keep repeating this myth about a sophomore slump and it just isn't true

Cam is only 24 years old and already has thrown for almost 11,000 yards, 61 TDs

He has run for almost 2,000 yards already and 28 TDs

He is a pure stud

If he had top quality WRs he would be a top 3 QB in the NFL

John Childress -> RE: College Football (Future Vikings!) (12/21/2013 4:54:05 PM)

Only one game

But right now Carr is at a Ponder-like 3.9 yards per pass attempt

Might as well just pass the ball to himself

a la Brad Johnson

Jeff Jesser -> RE: College Football (Future Vikings!) (12/21/2013 5:07:31 PM)

Agree fellas. First time i've seen him play but he looks awful. The only thing he does better than Ponder, that i have seen, is he's not afraid to throw when a guy isn't wide open.

I stand corrected....you are correct!

This has not been his best game...thats for sure!

Better than Bridgewater?

I don't think so
