Sorry, this is NOT a story about the Twins. Given the current Administration, it NEVER will be.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (7/9/2014 1:45:53 PM)

The Red Sox are set to designate catcher A.J. Pierzynski for assignment, sources tell Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter). The 37-year-old veteran signed a one-year, $8.25MM deal to join Boston over the past offseason.

Parting with Pierzynski could well be the first step towards a partial break-up of a Red Sox team that has fallen well off its World Series from of a year ago. Sitting 10 and a half games out of the division lead, the Red Sox will give a chance to youngster Christian Vazquez, who will learn on the job with help from veteran backup David Ross.

Needless to say, things did not work out as hoped for the club or the player. Pierzynski owns a .254/.286/.348 line through 274 plate appearances with just four home runs.

Rough year.

Dave E -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (7/9/2014 1:54:01 PM)

Remember: the Twins offered him a two year deal.

I'd take that A-hole back in a heart beat.

New York Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka has been placed on the disabled list with what is being called "right elbow inflammation," the team announced Wednesday.

The red sox dump AJ and calling up a young kid. Is that possible? Not for the twins

Those would be marquee numbers with the Twins. How many Twins batters are over .250? How many have hit four HR?

7 over .250

7 with 4 or more HRs

Thanks Ed. I was speaking figuratively but AJ would be in the middle of the pack with this team. And he has twice as many HR as another player on this team presently on the DL. [;)]

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (7/10/2014 11:58:40 AM)

The Red Sox certainly won't get anyone to take him in a trade with the way they talked about him anonymously to Bradford. They called Pierzynski a negative influence, indifferent to the club's collective struggle and generally not in tune with the team's goals. After winning the World Series in 2013, Boston currently has a won-loss record of 40-51, good enough for last place in the AL East. Bradford's sources don't say it's all Pierzynski's fault — but you get the feeling they'd like to:

A microcosm of Pierzynski's approach was mentioned by more than one of the backstop's former teammates, who revealed his propensity to spend a significant amount of time looking at his phone while at his locker during games. In one instance, after a particularly rough outing in which the starting pitcher had been pulled early in the game, Pierzynski could be found staring at his phone while the pitcher gave off the appearance of being an emotional wreck just a few feet away. That incident paved the way for at least one complaint to management from a teammate.
So the Red Sox were infected by Pierzynski, bound to become a team of 25 guys with 25 different mobile phone usage plans, so they cut him before it spread. (24 guys, 24 cabs was so '80s.)

As Bradford notes, that was Pierzynski's reputation (fair or not) before the Red Sox signed him in free agency before the season. A.J.'s nature didn't seem to be a problem with the Minnesota Twins or Chicago White Sox when he was there, and the Texas Rangers were mum about Pierzynski's influence in 2013. It's possible that the Rangers ascribed to the axiom, "If you cant' say something nice, don't say anything." Or maybe the Rangers realized that Pierzynski's hitting production (which dropped for for them, too, just not as much) had more to do with why he wasn't helping than time spent on his phone.

At 37, it's possible Pierzynski has become too old to help a major league team. But blaming face time with his phone is silly. Further: Complaining about him after the fact, and conjuring reasons why bringing Pierzynski to Boston was a mistake, only makes the Red Sox look bad.

Suzuki has been a great signing for the Twins but I sure wish I could have seen AJ catching Ricky Nolasco.

Maybe he would have gone out to the mound and punched Ricky when AJ signaled for a fastball and ricky threw his patented breaking ball instead.[&:]

Maybe AJ throught Big Papi's antics toward the official scorer in the middle of a game were bush league.

Indifferent to winning just seems out of character for AJ.

I know it is 0% but if Ryan had any foresight at all on how to incrementally fix things with his 40-man roster and organizational depth he would call up the Cards and ask for Randall Grichuk the OF for Suzuki....no great shakes as far as being an uber prospect but he could play centerfield for us and not embarrass himself. And what the Twins are trotting out there as far as outfielders and outfield defense is embarrassing right now.

Was Steven piscotty the only cardinal close to the top 50? Thoughts on Randall grichuck .

Matt Eddy: Grichuk is more talented than we’ve given him credit for in the past, but big league evaluators have serious doubts about him as a regular based on continued struggles versus righthanders. Even if he doesn’t improve in same-side matchups, he still has a career path as a platoon bat who can defend and run a bit.

Cards are only 2 games back.......with Molina out, look even more to the future. Trade them Suzuki for a pitching prospect. I know the outfield is an embarrassment right now but this season is already done. We still need more pitching.

But as Matt noted, Twins will end up trading Pinto and get some reliever from the Cards.

As Stacey noted.....0 % chance of trading Suzuki.....I started laughing when I thought back to my idea of trading Suzuki as well.

Yep.....Twins trade all star catcher.

Instead we will extend him for 2 more years and watch this season as his outlying outstanding season.

TR doing something bold to plan for the future......[&:][&:][&:]

Yes I would prefer a pitcher as well. Just was looking at it as far as being realistic and what the Cards had an excess of. With Suzuki being a free agent after this season and him just being a stopgap option, very short term for them, I saw a match to them with outfielders. They have a ton of good prospects there, Piscotty and James Ramsey (and Tavaras).

But this is all wasted typing. The Twins view Suzuki as a long-term piece right now. I have no doubt of that.
