So much for Suzuki to STL

The Cardinals have agreed to a deal with free agent catcher A.J. Pierzynski, reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com (via Twitter). Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch first reported that the sides were moving towards an agreement, with Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reporting that Pierzynski would be joining the team tomorrow(SAT) in Chicago.

Papi will whine when Archer drills him. And he should.

Totally Agree Ed....I watched the game on MLB....he flipped that bat35-40 feet towards his dugout, spinning around and around.
No place for that in baseball.
And you are right - he will get drilled one day in the future!
Then watch him cry!

He's become a bigger whiner, a bigger primadonna, a bigger prick ..... Than ANY of the usual suspects.
And he gets away with it.
It's BS
Plunk him. Constantly. Don't kid yourself .... Maddon will not let it stand. That's why I love him. If you play for him, you will get it, or you won't be there long.

He has become a big a**hole, and embarrassment for the whole league.
Commish needs to step is and stop it now!
No more special treatment for the primadonnas in the league!

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (7/28/2014 10:15:43 AM)

Exactly Lyle.
It's sad, he's a huge respected figure and he acts like a pissed off clown most days.
Talks about class and respect, then never gives it.
And yet people hate Jeter. Sigh.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (7/28/2014 3:25:34 PM)

And I suspect the Twins will pass again.

For no real reason. This guy a stud? perhaps. But do they REALLY have better options?

Reports indicated that 28 of Major League Baseball’s 30 teams were represented at Rusney Castillo‘s showcase over the weekend, and Ben Badler of Baseball America has the latest on the 27-year-old Cuban free agent. Castillo will have private workouts with the Red Sox, Yankees and Phillies this coming week, and Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com tweets that the Orioles are also arranging a private workout.

djskillz -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (7/28/2014 5:22:19 PM)

I think they do really have options in the OF. Not too disappointed in this one. Especially if the bidding is high.

As his struggles worsen, the Phillies have had internal discussions about releasing one-time star first baseman Ryan Howard after the season, reports Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com. Howard is owed the rest of his $25MM salary this season and comes with $60MM in future guarantees.

It does not appear that the club has reached any finality in regards to Howard’s future. The possibility of a trade has been explored, but Philadelphia has not found another club interested in taking on any substantial part of Howard’s contract. That is not surprising, of course, given that the 34-year-old is slashing a career-low .224/.305/.377 through 417 plate appearances on the year.

Long-term contracts should become illegal in baseball. It is ruining the sport. If they are not going to implement a salary cap, the least they can do is limit FA contracts to 4-5 years.

If I were GM, My standards for a FA would be

1. If we go longer than 3 years then every additional year will be team option only.
2. No trade clauses are not an option, Unless player is willing to lop 10% off of their final dollar value of their contract. If you are going to get paid this much, you will assume the risk of being traded.
3. Buyouts for team option years will not exceed 500K.
4. Contracts will have a low base salary with performance bonuses, no guaranteed money, you get paid when you succeed.
5. Every contract for my team will include team wins bonuses for more than 88 wins, then 95.

Absolutely agree with this. [8D]

You actually win by locking up your young elite guys very early to longterm team-friendly deals when you have ALL the leverage for their first 6 years when they're getting severely underpaid. That's what the A's/Rays do. It works. You're taking minimal risk in the grand scheme of things and the player is also still getting some security.

They also can evaluate talent. Something the Twins are poor at, as an organization.

Let's be honest here. The Twins organization is terrible at evaluating talent. Poor is a D grade. The Twins get an F!

Agree again...
What is going on with Buxton and Sano?
Are they still inactive and hurt?

djskillz -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (7/29/2014 9:30:30 AM)

Buxton's back playing. He's still a force; just has had some poor luck with his wrists this year. But he's back healthy and playing well again now. Probably will be moved up to New Britain any day now and likely finish the year there. Next year with a good spring training he still may start the year with the big club. Or at the latest likely up in June to avoid super 2 status. Which with Buxton is absolutely a decent strategy because the kid is going to be a superstar. He's the type of special talent that you lock in right away with an Evan Longoria type contract IMO.

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (7/29/2014 9:33:27 AM)

Damn I wish I had your optimism.
We will find some way to F up the Buxton/Sano dream years.
It's what we do.

djskillz -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (7/29/2014 9:38:05 AM)

Maybe the only other guy in my life I've been this convinced about being a MN star was Mauer. Buxton WILL be a star. His talent just oozes all over the field. Most talented baseball prospect/talent I've ever seen in person, at any level. If we screw him up, we have done something very, very bad.

Sano hopefully will be a star, but worst case he's probably Adam Dunn, which certainly isn't a bad thing. I think Buxton's floor with his baserunning/defense/arm to go with his hitting ability is significantly higher.

I will go the positive route on this one.
We need some positivity in this organization,
and might as well start with these two.
Expect good results on thier remaining stops in the minors,
and even better results here at Target!!

Until we have major change in the FO and managerial staff, I have little if any hope that Buxton / Sano will turn this franchise around.

I agree that Gardenhire and Anderson, and some others need to be gone now!
My signature of three + years depicts my feelings of these two.
I still would like positivity to reign again, somehow!
We cannot win as an organization without it!

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (7/29/2014 11:06:02 AM)

There's no way anything good will come to us if dumb, dumber, and dumbest are still here when our young talent emerges.
My positivity will return when Molitor is promoted.

What if they fire Gardy, essentially escorting his buddy Andy out the door at the same time, but DON'T hire Molitor to be manager?

What if they hire someone else?

For me, it would depend on who they hire. If they go after multi team failures like Manny Acta then I would be furious. If they stayed in house and hired say Scott "failed at every single other coaching job I've had" Ulger, I would once again be furious.

If they hire someone who knows how to win, and work with young players though...

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (7/29/2014 11:21:38 AM)

Hmm, no outside re-treads, and no in-house lackeys ...... Ummmmm, kinda leaves Molitor, eh?
Knows how to win, and works well with young players...... Hmmmm, more Molitor vibes, huh?

Molitor the obvious choice....
What about Glynn?
What does he bring to the table?

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (7/29/2014 11:27:06 AM)

I was shocked they gave GeneO a shot at AAA
It turned out pretty well, IMO.
He may be my second choice.
One thing I can agree with TGS on .... Screw the usual retreads out there.

Trekgeekscott -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (7/29/2014 11:36:45 AM)

I would actually be fine with Molitor. I'm not as convinced that he's a savior or anything, but I wouldn't have a problem with the guy.

I was just trying to start a conversation of who we should hire say they opt NOT to go the Molitor route...
