Too bad I have to run out for a while[&o]

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/16/2014 9:30:18 AM)

Angels are in the playoffs. First time since '09???

You'd think 9 or 10 would be the record. To end the streak at 8 in an NL game is kind of silly.

Jacob deGrom has been one of the season's most pleasant surprises, and the 26-year-old Mets righty has pitched his way into contention for National League Rookie of the Year honors. On Monday, deGrom did even better than that by striking out the first eight hitters to tie a modern major-league record.

My friend Tom called a while ago...he said:
"Are you watching this?"

deGrom has 12 Ks in 4.2 right now.

DeGrom wound up pitching seven innings, allowing three runs and striking out a career-high 13. His previous high was 11, set on May 31 against the Phillies and tied on July 8 against the Braves.

Scioscia, like Gardy, should have been fired a long time ago. Those two guys are very, very similar.

Agree.....Scioscia with the talent he was provided has done very very little recently. OK....so they win this season. But they have the best player on the planet on their roster. Pujols may not be the player he once was but is still very good.

Scioscia has a tendency to over manage within a game. let the players play.

I think when we played the Angels earlier in the season, I posted that Scioscia should have been fired long ago. Now his job is safe with this great comeback.

One thing Scioscia does have.....a trip to and a WS.

Gardy will never get to a WS as a manager.

djskillz -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/16/2014 10:08:07 AM)

I've said it a bunch before, but just like USC and Texas in CFB, the Angels and Dodgers SHOULD always pretty much dominate the sport. They have fantastic ownership, great fan support and media coverage, fantastic weather to draw players but still are a "laid back" atmosphere from fans compared to NY, etc. And they have amazing TV deals.

Really the only way those teams can't win consistently is bad management (front office and coaching staff). Scioscia is a big part of that problem for the Angels.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/16/2014 10:30:23 PM)

Veteran Phillies righty A.J. Burnett has bumped the value of his 2015 player option to $12.75MM with tonight’s start, his 32nd, MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki notes on Twitter. While it remains to be seen whether he decides to return, Burnett’s injury-free but less productive 2014 campaign makes it unlikely that he would deliver much in return via trade. (Of course, his 20-team no-trade clause also presents a significant barrier.)

Congrats to the Os and Nats!
Clinchers!
Both have great managers.
And a couple x-Twins.

djskillz -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/17/2014 8:33:51 AM)

I'm still rooting for the A's/Royals/Pirates, but it would be pretty sweet to see a Beltway series.

Courtesy of the stupidity of Ron Gardenhire..........former MOY.

Glad to have you back SMF.

@richardjustice
Corey Kluber's 244 K’s are the most for an Indians pitcher since Sam McDowell had 304 in 1970.

Papsmear gets suspended for being a douche. Whodathunkit?

Stacey King -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/17/2014 10:18:12 AM)

so, did span make a passing comment on the Twins trading him away last night after they clinched & were celebrating?

Span via text on his comments aimed at #MNTwins: "There wasn't any malicious intent behind my comments point blank period."

Dave E -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/17/2014 10:23:21 AM)

Heh heh...too funny.

djskillz -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/17/2014 10:24:21 AM)

What'd he say?

I always felt Span was one of the more upstanding guys in the game. Always respectful, great with fans, etc.

Dave E -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/17/2014 10:25:29 AM)

Said something along the lines of "I felt like I was held back when I was with the Twins."

djskillz -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/17/2014 10:26:04 AM)

Oh. Shocking...

Dave E -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/17/2014 10:26:18 AM)

Actually a little odd coming from him -- once he finally played well in the minors, he got a pretty quick shot in the bigs, if I recall the squences correctly. But perhaps he's referring to something else.

djskillz -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/17/2014 10:28:28 AM)

Probably base stealing? Twins never ran him enough.

Stacey King -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/17/2014 10:28:47 AM)

Would like to see a little heat put on Gardenhire by way of a story on his history with players who leave.

I'm not talking about Span really because he did well here, but the rest of them too dating back to Balfour & Lohse. Balfour was one of the first to go through the Twins now patented medical staff machinations and innuendo about toughness. He said his am wasn't right, they said he was one of those players who wouldn't pitch unless he felt 100%. Well he ended up with TJ surgery soon after leaving.

If only one of the beat writers would do a long article on players who have gotten away from Gardenhire's idiocy and did well elsewhere. A big old list in the Trib with pictures, stats with the Twins, quotes from Gardenhire when they were here. Stats and accomplishments after they left.

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/17/2014 10:29:48 AM)

Loving the rebirth of JJ Hardy
Team leader over there
Amazing they can still win with a guy that slow and that range-less and that hard to fit into a plan.
All you need to know about Gardendorks decision-making ability re personnel.

Fun team
Hope they do well
Like a lot of the playoff teams this year.
Should be fun.
