From Law ...
Teams that should have bought or sold.

I hope everyone has recovered from the excitement of this year's trade deadline, which included all of three sellers -- Houston and the two Chicago teams. Here's a look at teams who didn't do anything but should have, or could have if the market had cooperated.

Sellers who didn't sell

[image]http://a.espncdn.com/i/teamlogos/mlb/med/trans/phi.gif[/image] Philadelphia Phillies: The Phillies couldn't even execute the biggest no-brainer trade of all -- dealing Michael Young, age 36 and an impending free agent, so they could play prospect Cody Asche every day at third and Darin Ruf at first for the rest of the year. Young could still move in August if, say, the Yankees claim him on waivers, but the Phillies also lost opportunities to deal other free agents-to-be, including Carlos Ruiz (age 34) and Chase Utley (34).

Utley in particular is baffling; the Phillies seem to be trying to work out a contract extension with him, even though he hasn't played a full season since 2009 and his defense is declining with all of his leg issues. If they absolutely must have him, they could trade him now for prospects and re-sign him in November. The Phillies are seven games out of the wild card and 11 out of first, with an aging, expensive roster and a farm system that's thin at the Double- and Triple-A levels. Ruben Amaro Jr. needed to start a rebuild. Instead he sat on his hands.

[image]http://a.espncdn.com/i/teamlogos/mlb/med/trans/sea.gif[/image] Seattle Mariners: The Mariners are 11 games out of first, and eight out of the wild card with four teams to pass. They have impending free agents in Raul Ibanez (age 42, although he may be immortal), Kendrys Morales, Michael Morse, Oliver Perez and even defensive replacement/utilityman Brendan Ryan.

They could even have shopped Hisashi Iwakuma, signed for $6.5 million through next year, but potentially superfluous with the other starters in Seattle's system. And the Mariners stood pat. It's a lost opportunity to make the team better in the long run, with no upside beyond maybe a 75th win this year

[image]http://a.espncdn.com/i/teamlogos/mlb/med/trans/col.gif[/image] Colorado Rockies: The Rockies have the best record of the four teams I listed here, but their competitive position is so poor -- they're nine games out of the division (in the loss column), eight out of the second wild card and have to leapfrog more than one team in each -- that they should at least have been opportunistic sellers. Both Matt Belisle (age 33) and Rafael Betancourt (age 38) would have value in trade to contenders; Belisle is healthy and should have been made available, while Betancourt is on the DL and could be a waiver trade later this month.

The bigger bait they could have dangled is lefty Jorge de la Rosa, who has a club option for 2014 at $11 million that was triggered when he picked up his player option for 2013; de la Rosa ranks ninth in the NL in WAR (per FanGraphs) this year, his first full year back from 2011 Tommy John surgery, even though his velocity is down about 2 mph from where it was before the surgery. He would have intrigued some clubs.

[image]http://a.espncdn.com/i/teamlogos/mlb/med/trans/mil.gif[/image] Milwaukee Brewers: The Brewers own the majors' fourth-worst record, so there is no question whether they should have been sellers. But they sold only one player (Francisco Rodriguez), and that was one they never wanted to keep in the first place. In Milwaukee's defense, however, it didn't have a lot of salable assets. I've heard they'd love to move Rickie Weeks' contract but found little interest.

Yovani Gallardo may have torched his own trade value with his leg injury on Tuesday, but given his declining velocity and $11 million contract next year, it would have made sense for the Brewers to put him out there before this week -- and to do the same with Kyle Lohse, whose three-year, $33 million deal has turned out to be the wrong move for the team this spring.

[image]http://a.espncdn.com/i/teamlogos/mlb/med/trans/nym.gif[/image] New York Mets: They didn't get an offer they liked on Marlon Byrd. Without knowing what the offers were, I would say I'd probably have just decided which one was the best and taken it. Bobby Parnell's trade value will still be there this winter, and it could make more sense for the team to package him and a pitching prospect to try to acquire a bat.

Buyers who didn't buy

[image]http://a.espncdn.com/i/teamlogos/mlb/med/trans/tex.gif[/image] Texas Rangers: The Rangers could have used another bat in the outfield, with or without the potential loss of Nelson Cruz to a suspension. David Murphy isn't an everyday player, and the solution in left isn't currently in the organization -- and that assumes they don't also have to fill right field. But the market didn't seem to offer an ideal corner bat, and the Rangers could be better off playing Jurickson Profar out there for the rest of the year.

[image]http://a.espncdn.com/i/teamlogos/mlb/med/trans/pit.gif[/image] Pittsburgh Pirates: The Pirates were in the same situation as the Rangers -- they have a black hole in right field, but unless Hunter Pence or Giancarlo Stanton became available, they may just have been better off standing pat, especially if the alternative meant trading one of their many power arms. The fact they're near locks to make the playoffs now also makes the lack of a move easier to accept.

[image]http://a.espncdn.com/i/teamlogos/mlb/med/trans/kan.gif[/image] Kansas City Royals: I liked the small move the Royals made, adding a platoon partner for David Lough in Justin Maxwell at the cost of a probable fifth starter in high Class A pitcher Kyle Smith, but wish they'd been able to fill the larger hole they have at second base. Only Toronto has received less production from that position than Kansas City has, so little that even Rickie Weeks would represent a substantial upgrade.

But once again we're looking at a market where there was little available -- other than Weeks and former Royal Alberto Callaspo, who went to Oakland, the only second baseman who might have been available was Howie Kendrick, who probably would have required top prospect Kyle Zimmer as a return.

Boston completes a 6-run comeback in the ninth

One night after winning in 15 innings for their major league-leading 10th walkoff victory, the Red Sox did it again to sweep Seattle and open a one-game lead in the AL East over the idle Tampa Bay Rays.

"We don't quit. Ever," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "We truly believe we have a chance to do something special on a given night or given year. And that happens to be this year."

MANAGER CHANGE

Olneys August trade candidates

The names have started passing through the waiver wires, and there will be a lot of deals this month, some general managers are predicting. More players will change hands as more teams wave the white flag on the 2013 season and try to save a little money or recoup a little value.

Below, some of the guys who are candidates to be traded this month, either because they get claimed by a team and a deal is worked out or because they pass through waivers and are subsequently swapped:

Starting pitchers

Phil Hughes, Yankees: They are not going to re-sign him, but they could give him a one-year qualifying offer after the season in order to recoup a compensation draft pick. If the Yankees deal him this month, they’ll want at least the value of a pick in return.

The best thing for Hughes, undoubtedly, would be a trade, because otherwise he could become the Kyle Lohse of the forthcoming winter, with the draft-pick compensation dragging down his market value as a free agent. (Lohse has a $7.15 million salary this year.)

John Danks, White Sox: He’s having a rough season, with a 4.57 ERA and a 2-8 record. Keep in mind, though, that he’s 28 years old and is signed through 2016 at $14.25 million annually. If the White Sox get an opportunity to move at least some of that money, they could jump at it.

Mike Pelfrey, Twins: He’s eligible for free agency in the fall and has struggled, generally, but he did throw better in July and some contender hit by injuries might want to take a shot. (He has a $4 million salary in 2014.)

Joe Saunders, Mariners: The Orioles added him late last season and he responded well. His recent outings have not been good, however. (His salary in 2014 is $6.5 million.)

Left-handed relievers

Darren Oliver, Blue Jays: He’s not really a specialist, given the fact that left-handers have an OPS of 1.112 against him this year. But he’s been around and at low cost, some team might bite ($3 million salary this year).

Javier Lopez, Giants: He’s good and he has demonstrated he can thrive in October, and it figures somebody’s going to claim him. Before the trade deadline, the Giants asked for a starting pitcher in return for him, a demand that was perceived as really high by opposing teams ($4.25 million in salary this year).

Mike Gonzalez, Brewers: He’s got good numbers against lefties this season ($2.25 million in salary this year).

Right-handed relievers

Jared Burton, Twins: He hasn’t allowed a run in his past 12 outings ($3.25 million salary this year, with a $3.6 million team option for 2014).

Rafael Betancourt, Rockies: He’s on the disabled list and due back soon, and could be a good gamble for some contender because of his experience in a variety of different roles. He’s making $4.25 million, with a mutual option for 2014.

John Axford, Brewers: He’s pitched effectively the past few months, but he struggled at the end of July, and his salary -- $5 million this year, in his first year of arbitration eligibility -- might be prohibitive.

Matt Belisle, Rockies: He hasn’t pitched effectively lately, and with a salary of $4.1 million, he could clear waivers. There is a mutual option on his contract for 2014, at $4.25 million.

Huston Street, Padres: It’d be a surprise if he failed to clear waivers, given the $7 million salary he’s making this year and next. If a contender loses a closer to injury, it’ll be interesting to see if somebody calls the Padres about him.

Jonathan Papelbon, Phillies: He’ll get through waivers because of all the money owed to him, $13 million annually through 2015 with a vesting option for 2016. The question will be whether the Phillies aggressively market him in an effort to (1) save some money, and (2) get him off the team. But the Phillies weren’t really that interested in dumping salary at the deadline, inexplicably; had they unloaded Michael Young, the Yankees would’ve taken on the $4.3 million owed to him for the rest of the season.

It’d be a surprise if he gets swapped this month.

Utility men

Mark DeRosa, Blue Jays: He’s a respected veteran, he’s making very little money ($750,000), and he has an .856 OPS against left-handed pitchers. The question will be whether Toronto can get enough in return to coax it into making a deal. It’s probably a lock that he’s going to be claimed by some contender, and the Blue Jays will have to decide whether to move him.

Emilio Bonifacio, Blue Jays: He’s had a really poor season, with a .254 OPS, and his best skill -- stealing bases -- hasn’t manifested itself; he’s got only 11 steals in 16 attempts this year. But he’s got experience, he’s versatile and he’s not outrageously expensive, with a salary of $2.6 million.

Catchers

Chris Iannetta, Angels: Word has been burbling among scouts that the Angels are not happy with him, in spite of his solid on-base percentage of .357; he’s hitting just .211. Iannetta is signed for the next two seasons, at $4.975 million in 2014 and $5.525 million in 2015. He’s 30 years old, and remember: Catching is really scarce.

Carlos Ruiz, Phillies: He’s having a terrible season, he’s 34 and he’s making $5 million. But inevitably, some team is going to suffer a big injury at catcher -- heck, the Cardinals already might have -- and Ruiz could be attractive, if the Phillies entertain the thought of letting him go.

Infielders

[+] Enlarge[image]http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2013/0726/fan_u_franklin1x_300.jpg[/image]
Steven Bisig/USA TODAY SportsNick Franklin's bat is another reason Morales' bat seems more expendable.Kendrys Morales, Mariners: It seems really unlikely he’ll be traded, because the Mariners want to re-sign him. But remember, Scott Boras is his agent, and Seattle might decide to recoup some value for him if the Mariners determine he’s not coming back for 2014.

Paul Konerko, White Sox: The only way he would move, in all likelihood, would be if the White Sox leadership offers to deliver him into a pennant race and Konerko accepts that, at the end of what could be his final year in the big leagues. Chicago would have to eat most or all of the $13.25 million salary remaining.

Erick Aybar, Angels: Some executives believe he won’t be traded because some team will claim him, given that he’s still a good value, and the Angels will want to have a wider market for him before they deal him. Aybar is signed through 2016 at $8.5 million annually. If the Angels want to trade him to shave payroll, they’d be better off moving him in the winter.

Michael Young, Phillies: It makes no sense that Young wasn’t traded before the deadline. Presumably, the Yankees will place a claim on him, and right now, they’re in front of Texas and Boston in the claiming process.

Outfielders

Rajai Davis, Toronto: He’s 32 and making $2.5 million this year. He’s batting .276. You wonder if he might be a platoon guy for the Rangers; he’s got an .876 OPS against lefties.

Alex Rios, White Sox: Other teams weren’t interested in taking on the money owed to Rios, about $17 million through next year, at a time when he’s not distinguishing himself as a player. But he can play some defense when inspired, and can run and hit for some power. It might make sense for the Yankees or Rangers to claim him and tell the White Sox: Look, we’ll take the contract of the player, but we’re not going to give you much in return. The White Sox could always pull him back from waivers.

Juan Pierre, Marlins: He is making $1.6 million this season, and -- who knows? -- maybe some club will make a deal in order to use him as a pinch hitter, pinch runner and occasional starter.

Compare those #'s to Perkins contract.

He will earn $2.5 million in 2013, and $3.75 million in both '14 and '15, while his option for '16 is for $4.5 million, with a $300,000 buyout, according to a Major League source familiar with the contract negotiations.

Burton making more than Perkins as a set up man. Glen really gave MN a home-town discount.

This is not a joke. The IRS situation has everything to do with how the Pohlads are dealing with their payroll budget for the Twins. I suspect they will be down to around $67 million for 2014-tops!

Alex Rodriguez will be suspended Monday, likely through the end of the 2014 season, sources told "Outside the Lines" Saturday.
About 12 other players will also be suspended Monday, according to sources.
Several sources familiar with the talks said tense deliberations between Rodriguez and commissioner Bud Selig's office broke down completely Saturday after Selig told officials he would no longer negotiate.

His success along with other former Twins players is proof that playing for Gardy and Anderson in MN is an impossible place to succeed.

ewen21 -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (8/4/2013 1:10:26 PM)

Lohse, Garza, Liriano. All three were deemed "headcases" and yet apart from Carl Pavano and Liriano in 2010 no one has had what I would term a good season starting for the Twins since Santana left. Baker maybe.

This team used to brag about all this young pitching five or six seasons ago. They couldn't "mortgage the future" in order to help put the current team over the hump.

ewen21 -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (8/4/2013 1:11:25 PM)

Gardenhire and Anderson are toxic

Royals keep winning, but so do the Tigers
Going to get pretty bunched at the top of the Central if this continues, all chasing Detroit.
They can't keep this pace up, you'd think.
Detroits tough because they have the solid pitching to go along with a dangerous lineup.
Built for the long haul. Can't believe they haven't shored up their pen more. It may be the one area that will keep them from winning it all.

Pretty asinine if Brauns gone, and Arods playing. How's that make sense, Bud?
