Utter insanity. Span the epitome of mediocre gets $31 million.

Let's be honest, paying Alex Gordon $72 million is even more insane!

Take a look at Gordon's numbers. They are above average but well below outstanding. His career high OBP was last season at .377 but that is skewed because he only played in a 104 regular season games. His career K to BB ratio is 1000 to 468. And make no mistake, he strikes out a LOT! He has averaged one K per four AB over the past five seasons. I simply do not understand how a .269 career batter can be valued at $18 million per season. That is insanity in its purest form.

His best number is .... One
As in he's one of the main reasons his team has played in two straight WS.

Like I said, if you feel that way SMF, then the Royals have five other starting players who can rightfully ask for similar or even higher contracts because their offensive numbers support it. The Royals have set the bar for their players. Good luck in attempting to keep the roster in tact at that inflated rate.

But you're forgetting the income bump from winning a WS. And "contending" for 2 years, most likely to be a front-runner again in 2016, and beyond, with a pretty good core of players.

More attendance
More merchandise

and most likely, a better local TV deal in the near future.

To no one's surprise, ESPN puts the vacuous Ms. Mendoza in analyst role. Play the "barreled-up'' drinking game. You'll be smashed by 2nd.

Offense is not all that matters. A run saved is every bit as important as a run created. Basic math. Gordon is a good offensive player, but he's one of the best defensive players in baseball. That's the reason Heyward got so much; he's even better (and younger) than Gordon. Top 2 defensive player in baseball over the last few years.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (1/13/2016 9:42:55 PM)

The Marlins and second baseman Dee Gordon are in agreement on a five-year extension that will pay the reigning National League batting champion $50MM, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter link). The contract also contains a $14MM vesting option for a sixth season, Rosenthal adds.

It is a fantastic family investment and you can still spend more money than you take in and benefit from taxes etc.

Carl bought the Twins in 1984 for 44 million with his partners.

The current value of the Twins is 895 million in 2015.

In 30 years, their investment has increased by 20 times.

Sure wish my house which I purchased in 1992 increased 10 times today.

Sure wish my retirement portfolio showed that type of increase.

And guess what......baseball franchise increases aren't slowing down.

And you have to spend money to make money. Terry Ryan believes you make money by saving money.

Practically speaking, I don't believe for one second the projected "values" of ML baseball franchises or franchises in any major sport for that matter. You don't see any buyers lining up to spend $1 billion or more to buy them. That is simply a fictitious toy that the owners and baseball speak likes to toss around. Until such time that somebody actually opens up their wallet to pay that kind of money to buy a professional sports franchise, I remain disenchanted.

Umm, it's basic math, again. Some of these TV deals net the teams $150M/season in profits just strictly off of TV. And some of those contracts are locked in for 20 years (ie $3 billion). That's just TV. And yet you don't believe that teams are worth $1B plus? Honestly Mark, it shocks me that you think that when you're in the accounting industry. Are all teams worth $1B plus? No, and no one has claimed that. But the Dodgers sold for $2B 4 years ago (they're worth more now), the Clippers just sold for $2B, the Tennessee Titans, in a relatively small pro sports market, are reportedly worth over $1B and there are rumblings are for sale. Hell, Kroenke is basically PAYING $2.2 billion just to MOVE the Rams. Just moving. A $550M relocation fee to the league and a $1.7B privately financed stadium. Each NFL team is getting an annual check from the league for $220M. Basically they're pretty much guaranteed at least $2.2B over a 10 year period. Just off of their shared profits, not anything on their own. Pro sports leagues are making money like crazy, which in turn, is why the players are making money like crazy. We are all contributing to it; every time you watch a game on TV or listen on radio you are contributing to it. Just the same as when you take in a movie or a concert. Again, I don't see anyone complaining about what Taylor Swift is making. Or Harrison Ford. Mark, if you own ESPN, MLB, or Fox Sports, which I'm sure you do, then you're contributing.

Yep, they all do this to to weaken their cases for publicly financed ballparks, for other perks they receive from their communities. That is the ticket, inflate the value of your property so the average person will feel sorry for your financial situation.

There are not a lot of sport franchise transactions because:

1. existing owners like being owners and don't want to sell
2. it is an excellent financial investment.

There are plenty of people wanting to buy franchises....they rarely go up for sale. When they do, it is for huge amounts. 2 billion for the Dodgers, 2 billion for the LA Clippers (granted, it was overpayment but they guy wanted an NBA franchise desperately)

In 2009, Cubs were purchased for 845 million. In 2015, they are worth 1.8 billion according to Forbes.
Their revenue is 300 million.

This list wasn't created by baseball owners......it was produced by Forbes, an entity dedicated to the worship of money and the people that have the most.

Well if professional sports franchises are indeed truly worth $1 billion-plus it is nobody's fault except the fans for buying into the madness. So it is really unfair to criticize any owners by calling them cheap or not willing to spend the money that other organizations do. That is their choice. If fans continue to buy into the baseball franchises by attending games, viewing games via TV/cable, and purchasing hoards of clothing and memorabilia, then the system will not change. And the Twins will continue to field a mediocre team every season with the Pohlads as owners. But we already know that. [>:]

They have fairly gutted their pitching system. How did they just not waive the white flag?

So confused.

Oh,yeah, they bought Cain's last 2 years of arbitration out at 18 mill, too.

Probably figure they'll have someone ready by then [:D]
