Braves roll into NY and sweep the Mets [:-]

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (6/20/2016 7:15:22 AM)

The Red Sox placed outfielder Rusney Castillo on outright waivers Saturday, reports Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports. Castillo will clear waivers Monday if nobody claims him. Given that Castillo is on a $10.5MM salary this year and is set to rake in upward of $50MM through 2019, odds are strongly against a team claiming the Cuba native.

This obviously isn’t the outcome the Red Sox or Castillo anticipated when the two sides agreed to a seven-year, $72.5MM contract in 2014. Castillo came to the United States as a potential five-tool center field option for Boston, but he never lived up to that promise with the Red Sox after an excellent initial taste of the majors.

Going forward, there’s a chance Castillo will remain with the Red Sox organization if he clears waivers, according to Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald. While Castillo would no longer be on the club’s 40-man roster, he’d still be able to suit up for Pawtucket.

Sunday 1:21pm: The Red Sox hadn’t contacted Castillo as of an hour ago, tweets Rob Bradford of WEEI. Castillo has three days before he’ll have to report to the team, Bradford adds.

Buyer beware; this is the 2nd Cuban guy signed to big money that has flopped (Guerrero)

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (6/20/2016 7:43:59 AM)

Mark Lowe signed a two-year, $11MM free agent deal with the Tigers last winter but has struggled horribly in Detroit, posting a 10.71 ERA over 21 innings. There isn’t much the Tigers can do with Lowe, MLB.com’s Jason Beck writes, unless they’re willing to eat the remaining money or if Lowe is willing to accept a minor league assignment.

Maybe they can repeat the same feat when they play the Twins in late July at TF.

The Royals have won two in a row to end an eight-game losing streak, during which the offense suffered through one of the worst droughts in franchise history. In the middle six losses they scored just four runs and hit .192

Sounds Twinsesque.

The New York Yankees should deal their best player, Carlos Beltran. And the sooner they do it, the better.

Sure, they would be losing a lot. Beltran has been the Yankees' most productive hitter this season, leading the team in batting average (.283), homers (18) and RBIs (48). He is as professional as they come, as he advises his teammates. He is honest with the media. He should be a no-doubt Hall of Famer one day.

But he shouldn't be a Yankee by the Aug. 1 trade deadline.

One of the most important parts of general manager Brian Cashman's job is asset management. Beltran is one of the best assets Cashman has to manage, and his value is ripe for trading, especially with his age and injury history.

Cashman could hold onto the 39-year-old this year in hopes the Yankees somehow can overcome the American League East teams ahead of them or chase a wild-card spot. Those clubs have better rosters, though, and Yankees sit a game below .500.

Holding onto Beltran would be the easy thing to do before a possible qualifying offer in the offseason.

This scenario takes into account the chance he could actually accept the offer, leaving the Yankees with two 40-year-old designated hitters, as Alex Rodriguez's contract finally ends after 2017. (Beltran currently mostly plays right field, but he should be a full-time DH.)

What Cashman should consider most is extending Beltran's worth to the Yankees beyond the next four months.

Given the Yankees' draft record over the past decade or so, it is probably wiser to try to deal for a better known minor league quantity than to grab another pick. There are no guarantees in such an approach, but it seems like a better one.

Take what the Detroit Tigers did last season, when the club moved Yoenis Cespedes to the Mets.

On July 31, the Tigers were 50-53 and just 3½ games off the wild-card spot. They could have gone for it and tried to sneak into the one-game shootout. Instead, they unloaded Cespedes to the Mets for two players. One of those players is rookie right-hander Michael Fulmer, who has pitched at a historic level this season.

While it might be difficult for Cashman to identify the next Fulmer, the Yankees should sell this year so they can be well-positioned to be competitive again sooner than later.

Along with Beltran, Cashman has a bevy of trade chips at his disposal.

Dealing Aroldis Chapman, a free agent at the end of the season who has only been OK as the team's closer, seems like a no-brainer. As with Beltran, the Yankees could extend Chapman a qualifying offer, which could lead to a first-round draft pick, but should trade him if a deal is right.

The idea of trading lefty reliever Andrew Miller makes some sense, because the Yankees have Dellin Betances as a closer-in-waiting. Miller, like Beltran, a pro's pro on and off the field, has a reasonable deal and is probably the best of the Yankees' top three bullpen arms, garnering the best potential return.

As far as other options go, Brett Gardner, CC Sabathia (if he were willing to wave his no-trade clause and the Yankees picked up a good portion of his $25 million for next year) and Brian McCann (the Yankees also would have to likely eat some money and get him to wave his no-trade clause) could be on the block.

The Yankees' farm system might have some potential, but there are question marks. Starter Luis Severino's major league career is currently on hold at Triple-A. Outfielder Aaron Judge has not yet mastered the minors and may not be ready to be a major league starter by 2017, as hoped. First baseman Greg Bird is out for the season with shoulder surgery.

The Yankees would be wise to use this season to reload, get younger and build around a new core. That means trading Beltran and others. If they don't do it, they will likely look back in a few years with regret.

The Rangers are truly the surprise team of the 2016 season. What is so different about their roster this season?

Texas has been amazing.
Doing things right there.

Some teams make excuses, some teams just win.

The Giants continue to win, even with a makeshift lineup on Thursday that included Mac Williamson hitting third, Trevor Brown hitting fifth, Ramiro Pena playing shortstop and Conor Gillaspie at third. The bullpen threw four innings of one-hit relief. They climbed to 20 games over .500

Greinke stole his 5th base tonight
Love it.

Crazy numbers.

Given their pitching, along with other guys that hit on that team, there is zero pressure on Bryant to produce. helps

Cubbies have several vets guiding the youngsters. Something Hunter did last year, and is missing this year.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (6/28/2016 11:23:01 AM)

Am sure some shriek about 74 k'sin 73 games.

Bryant makes up for it.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (6/28/2016 11:26:39 AM)

Bryant has more xbh than singles
19doubles/21HRs (40)
39 singles

That's amazing in itself.

That was a dig at a Twins player. We don't do that around here, mister.

I like Park's power. He has zero clue on off speed and hi heat.

Bad combination.

Dangit

The Tribe wins and has fun

How can that be? [;)][:D]

ATLANTA -- Beware of baseball teams on a roll.

This warning isn't meant only for the Indians' opposition. While they won their 10th straight game Monday night with a 8-3 win over Atlanta, there is danger lurking in their clubhouse as well.

On Monday afternoon, a trap was set for unsuspecting souls passing through the visitor's locker room at Turner Field. The bait was a cooler placed by the door leading to the dugout. When a person walked past it, one of the players, usually Juan Uribe or Carlos Carrasco, would ask for a bottle of water out of the cooler.

When the person obliged and opened the top of the cooler, a realistic-looking rubber snake would pop its head out of the cooler. The person would recoil, everyone would laugh and the party would continue.

Funny stuff as long as you didn't open the cooler.
