The Braves have announced a one-year deal with free agent righty R.A. Dickey. The contract, the value of which remain unreported, includes a 2018 option.

Supposedly Bartolo Colon is signing there also - trying to accumulate an all AARP rotation I guess.

The Braves set out to acquire at least two starting pitchers this offseason, and in a span of 24 hours they’ve added two of the most durable innings eaters on the market. After signing R.A. Dickey to a one-year deal on Thursday, they’ve now reportedly agreed to a one-year, $12.5MM deal that will pry free agent right-hander Bartolo Colon away from the Mets. Colon is represented by Wasserman.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (11/15/2016 1:57:24 PM)

Pitching long-term deals really are a roll of the dice.

The Phillies have released lefty Matt Harrison, per a club announcement. Dropping him from the 40-man roster will increase the team’s flexibility this winter.

Harrison, 31, came to Philadelphia as part of the cost balancing in the Cole Hamels trade. He is still owed $15MM through next season, which includes a buyout of a 2018 club option, under the extension he signed with the Rangers.

There were no clear expectations that Harrison would even attempt to pitch this year. Serious back issues have completely derailed his career. Though he was able to return briefly to the majors in 2015, he hasn’t appeared in any competitive action since the trade.

By cutting ties with Harrison now, the Phillies will not be able to collect insurance proceeds to offset the money still owed, Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com notes on Twitter. The policy covering Harrison’s contract appeared to have some possibility of paying out for at least a significant part of the remaining salary, but that either wasn’t likely to occur or wasn’t worth the sacrifice of a roster spot.

Though he was never much of a strikeout pitcher, and tended to overperform his peripherals, Harrison pitched to a 3.34 ERA in 399 innings over the 2011 through 2012 campaigns. That led Texas to ink him to a five-year, $55MM extension, but Harrison was only able to make nine more starts from that point forward.

The Tigers and Dodgers have held some degree of trade talks regarding Detroit second baseman Ian Kinsler, reports MLB Network’s Jon Morosi (Twitter links). The connection is an obvious on-paper fit, considering Detroit’s stated desire to pare down payroll and get younger as well as the Dodgers’ lack of a clear starter at the position. While the Kinsler talks are of course worth noting, it should also be recognized that the Dodgers are casting a wide net as they explore options, and Kinsler has a partial no-trade clause which could potentially impact talks. Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports that Kinsler is currently one of four players in whom the Dodgers have interest with regard to their vacancy at second base (Twitter link).

One prospect in whom the Tigers have interest is first baseman/outfielder Cody Bellinger, according to Morosi, who notes that the Tigers are seeking left-handed power

Porcello won AL CY ; Verlander was left off 2 ballots completely

Porcello’s win came over fellow finalists Justin Verlander of the Tigers and Corey Kluber of the Indians. All were worthy contenders in a year in which nobody put up a truly dominant year. The best A.L. pitchers on a rate basis was reliever Zach Britton, who managed a fourth-place finish despite the innings limitations inherent to his job.

The vote came with its share of controversy. Verlander received 14 of the 30 available first-place votes, but narrowly missed the award when he was left off of two ballots altogether.

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (11/16/2016 11:26:19 PM)

Verlander was the clearest choice in history, when you looked beyond the win/loss record.
Led every other important pitching stat.
Boston bias.

Zero votes for Ervin Santana. That kind of upsets me.

If the players had a say in Cy Young

Especially hitters

The Twins staff would have received a ton of votes.

MDK -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (11/17/2016 10:26:44 AM)

Can you imagine the Tigers staff had they still had Porcello and Scherzer to complement Verlander?

With a hitter like Cabrera leading a potent offensive lineup?

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (11/17/2016 1:56:06 PM)

One less on the MN Payroll

The D-backs announced today that they’ve hired former Twins manager Ron Gardenhire as their new bench coach. Rounding out Arizona’s new wave of coaches will be Tony Perezchica (third base), Mike Fetters (bullpen) and Robby Hammock (quality control).

Gardenhire will join the D-backs coaching staff and serve as top lieutenant for new manager Torey Lovullo, who was actually a candidate to replace Gardenhire in Minnesota prior to the hiring of Paul Molitor before the 2015 season.

I would have loved for Lovullo to replace Molitor. Missed out on a good candidate because of a stupid commitment to Molitor.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (11/17/2016 5:56:19 PM)

The Astros have struck twice today: after announcing a deal to acquire catcher Brian McCann, the club has now agreed to sign free-agent outfielder Josh Reddick, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports (Twitter links). So long as his physical pans out, Reddick will receive a four-year, $52MM deal, per the report.

The Astros have acquired catcher Brian McCann from the Yankees, per team announcements. Prospects Albert Abreu and Jorge Guzman will head back in return. The Yankees will pay $5.5MM of McCann’s $17MM annual salary for the two guaranteed years remaining on his deal, Buster Olney of ESPN.com tweets.

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (11/18/2016 12:26:57 AM)

The Houston Astros and free-agent outfielder Josh Reddick have agreed on a four-year, $52 million contract, a source close to the situation told ESPN's Buster Olney.

The agreement, which is subject to a physical, was first reported by Yahoo! Sports and confirmed by ESPN.

In 155 combined games between the Oakland A's and Los Angeles Dodgers, Reddick hit .281 with 17 doubles, 10 home runs and 37 RBIs, while also providing steady defense in right field.
