Luxury of being a winning team. Can take this kind of chance.

The Red Sox have officially reached agreement on a one-year, $750K MLB contract with outfielder Grady Sizemore, reports Rob Bradford of WEEI.com. Sizemore, 31, is represented by CAA Sports. The deal includes significant incentives based on both plate appearances and the number of days Sizemore appears on the Sox roster, Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald reports (Twitter links). Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports (Twitter link) that the deal could reach $6MM if all are met.

Twins "had interest" some time ago. But why would Sizemore come to MN, when he could work back in and be on a contender?

Baker being the third best pitcher in the Twins have had in the last twenty seasons illustrates how badly this team has done at developing pitchers

and not much after that.

They've had a lot of success with bullpen guys, some of those 1 or 2 year wonders.

But starters? Not so much.

JAWS

Baker 603rd best starting pitcher of all-time

Liriano?

745th

And that's giving Liriano points for his Pirates career.

Conclusion?

Baker clearly had the better career as a Twin.

Remember the root canals?

Looks like Baker won't go back to CHI, but he could wind up back in the AL Central.

After losing out on Masahiro Tanaka, the Cubs remain interested in adding rotation depth, likely in the form of a relatively minor signing, reports Jesse Rogers of ESPNChicago.com. Chicago will not be in the market for one of the top remaining free agent starter, such as former Cubbie Matt Garza, unless a golden opportunity arises.

Neither is the club interested in bringing back Scott Baker, Rogers adds. According to Chris Cotillo of MLBDailyDish.com (via Twitter), the Mariners and Indians are more likely landing spots for the 32-year-old righty. The Cubs signed Baker to a one-year, $5.5MM deal last year, but Baker was only able to make three starts after a long Tommy John rehab.

How long did it take Baker to recover from surgery? He basically missed two seasons. What the heck was he doing? He probably had a clean bill of health, but was feeling things that weren't there. I imagine the Cubs couldn't get him out of there fast enough. The guy is a grade A wimp. Years of coddling will do that to you.

Baker needs 3 weeks on the DL to recover from a bad case of dandruff. I'm surprised he is already conscious 2 years after TJ surgery.

But he is the 3rd best Twins starting pitcher over the past 20 years.

Funny how the best players are the most highly criticized.

Hardly call it "taking a chance".  If he bombs they hardly have to pay him squat.  If he plays well they get the good pay and he's worth it.

this is exactly they kind of contract the Twins should have and would have offered for Sizemore.

The problem here is that Sizemore had the Twins (a near 100 loss team) and the World Champions to choose from for essentially the same deal.  Who wouldn't go to the World Champs under those conditions?  This isn't a matter of haves or havenots.  It's a matter of losers vs winners.

The 3 best Twins starting pitchers in the last 20 years are:

1) Santana
2) Radke
3) Baker

The players cannot be debated and neither can the order.

Here's what I'm thinking Dave did. He read my post about Baker being the 3rd best, and he's thinking "that can't be right....can it??" So he thinks and thinks. Gee...maybe he is right. No, I won't let him be right. He finally comes up with a name. Liriano. "That's what I'll go with." Then, to try to trick us, he lists him 2nd after Santana.

And you fell for it, Sweeny.

Even if he were the 3rd best pitcher of the last 20 years on the Twins, which he isn't, you're calling him the 3rd best starter of the worst collection of starting pitchers in the last 20 years. I assume you are only counting starts with the Twins because Garza and Lohse blow Baker out of the water. Eric Milton was better only counting his Twins starts.

No, Matt what triggers my laughter is that you there is anything significant to being the 3rd best starter on the Twins in the last 20 years.

CPAMAN will be pleased the Twins didn't sign him given those parameters. [:D]

If he goes the same route as DiceK or Irabu, they will regret that deal for 5 of the seven years.

They'll just site some sort of injury, re-coup some on insurance and pursue another pitcher.

NYY rarely regret any deal. They focus on winning titles.

They're probably getting smarter with adding ways out of contracts.  I am sure they are exploring the possibility of voiding the remainder ofcontract.

That is new one. [&:] Sad to think I used to like PayFraud. Now, he is one of the most despicable players of all time.

Thought I heard this morning there may be an out in Tanaka's contract after year four. Not sure how it works, though.

The contract provides Tanaka with an opt-out clause after the fourth season and also contains a full no-trade clause.

Wow, good one Yankees. [&o]

Just curious. Does anyone know that Tanaka is going to be THAT good? Personally I don't have a problem with them not competing with the Skankees for a $155M contract for him. What I do expect is that there is a known quantity like Garza available and the Twins have the money to spend on him. Don't just pay lip service to building a contender's rotation. Spend the f***in money and sign him.

I hope he sucks. Then, the Twins can get him on the rebound four years from now after he has had TJ surgery.

Matt, you obviously have the Bobby Kielty syndrome affliction regarding Scott Baker. Baker was an average pitcher for a couple of seasons. But he has always been a cry-baby and whimpy type pitcher who complains a lot. As Black 47 said "he has been coddled".

Yeah, it is akin to being Russian comrade brought in by train from the Ural Mountains or Siberia to fight a hopeless battle in Stalingrad vs. the Nazis in October of 1942. Statistics and facts suggested that a new Russian soldier was issued one rifle with a five-round clip per every two comrades. If the first died, you picked up his rifle and continued the charge into a spray of machine gun fire, tank and mortar rounds from the Germans. If you chose to hide or retreat, you were gunned down by the Russian machine-gun nest. Statistically, a new soldier had a 24-hour life-span over an eight-week period in October/November 1942. Baker was a guy who lasted about 36 hours.
