So the season-opener featured 76 points and a quarterback performance for the ages, and there was all this explosive-offense talk, and then, on Sunday, to open the 94th NFL season, this happened:

• The Patriots, who averaged 34 points a game last year, needed an Audie Murphy performance by Danny Amendola and a Stephen Gostkowski field goal with five seconds left to beat Buffalo 23-21.

• Seven of Sunday’s 13 games totaled 40 points or less.

• Pittsburgh’s offense was shut out at home for the first 58 minutes of a 16-9 loss.

• Seattle, which scored 37 points a game on average in its last six games of 2012, managed 12 at Carolina, and still won.

• Adrian Peterson’s first carry of 2013: 78 yards. His next 17 carries: 15 yards.

• Sunday’s leading rusher: Terrelle Pryor, quarterback, Oakland. In his first NFL start, Pryor rushed 13 times for 112 yards.

But here’s my favorite stat of all from the weekend:

Baltimore’s four wide receivers Thursday night: 15 catches, 215 yards, one touchdown.

The receiver Baltimore traded away for a sixth-round pick: 13 catches, 208 yards, one touchdown.

Just as I said - it was a sloppy, penalty filled, bad-play opening Sunday. We have plenty to be discouraged by with our own team - but across the league teams were looking pretty bad.

I watched parts of about 8 games and most teams looked like they were still in preseason form

Crazy thing is the NFL wants to go to 2 preseason games

I say the opposite

Teams need more real work in the preaseason

No players want to get hurt in "practice" games. Just eliminate the pre season and everyone can pare down their rosters in the first 4 weeks.

I feel just the opposite

1. You can get hurt anytime you walk out on the field - deal with it

2. Clearly these #1 teams need a lot more work before week 1

If you are worried about getting hurt don't play football!

QBR: 70.9
Briefly: Wilson's 320 yards were a career high and key on a day when the Seahawks had trouble running the ball. He had five completions (in seven attempts) on passes of at least 15 yards downfield for a total of 127 yards.

Christian Ponder
Passer rating: 63.1
QBR: 20.4
Analysis: The good news is that Ponder found receiver Jerome Simpson for passes of 44 and 47 yards, a downfield rarity relative to last season. But Ponder still threw three interceptions and had two others dropped. Two of his three sacks came on drive-killing first-down plays and his QBR on third downs was 0.4; only two of his seven third-down passes converted a first down.

I think the talk of the Pistol getting whipped is going to fall flat. Guys like Kaep and Wilson don't need to run the Pistol, they run the Pistol because it flummoxes defenses. But this new breed can actually pass, if you try to take it away from them they can beat you with their arm. The Pistol isn't a gimmick in my estimation, and from what I've heard some defensive people say. There are those that puff up and say they'll crush it, but I also hear a lot of good defensive minds say it will stick around because it poses real problems for defenses. And I noticed the Vikings started using the Pistol as well, though it seems more in a copycat fashion than anything serious.

Does anyone know of 'good news' regarding Tebow?


When the alarm went off this morning the radio host, for some unknown reason I was on a christian channel, was going on about - if you can believe this - Tebow being chased out of the NFL for being too religious....and that he would have the last laugh....

But I didn't catch the ending as I was being 'encouraged' to hit the snooze button...

Tebow was chased out of the NFL because he sucks at the position he wants to play.  His mechanics are atrocious.  He has a tendency to win in the short term, but in the long term would be terrible.  The Broncos saw this, dumped him as soon as they could and signed Peyton Manning.

Tebow wasn't good enough to unseat Mark Sanchez for crying out loud.
He couldn't stick with the Patriots.

If he was actually better at being a QB and less of a magnet for undeserved media attention, he would probably still be in the NFL.

Stats of the Week No. 5: San Diego, which won at Philadelphia, is now the favorite to win the Super Bowl. The Eagles' four most recent home-opener opponents, the Saints, Packers, Giants and Ravens, all won the Super Bowl that season.

Some people think that the 1st week is a little outrageous, scores sometimes get out of hand, and isn't a real true indicator of a teams' season, as some teams just aren't ready for the season. I think just the opposite, and although there are exceptions, it many times says a lot about what your season will be like. A loss in the 1st game of the season is quite disheartening and not a good sign. I think the 1st game says much about where a teams' talent is at, and then from game 4 on, coaches that are good at film study have more effect.

Here are the scores from game 1 2012, and a little analysis:

Jags 23 Vikes 26 - Vikes probably should have won by a wider margin
Cowboys 27 Giants 24 - Cowboys made the playoffs, Giants didn't, losing at home was not a good sign for the G men
Patriots 34 Titans 13 - Patriots made the playoffs, Titans were a sad team, losing big at home a bad sign
Redskins 40 Saints 32 - Redskins made the playoffs, Saints didn't, not a good sign to lose at home in the opener
Bills 28 Jets 48 - 2 bad teams, home team wins. They both finished with the same record, probably should have been a closer game
Seahawks 16 Cards 20 - This game was an anomaly. Seahawks lost on the road, probably should have won as they made the playoffs, Cards didn't
Steelers 19 Broncos 31 - Steelers didn't make the playoffs, the Broncos did
Dolphins 10 Texans 30 - Right on, Texans made the playoffs, Dolphins didn't
Eagles 17 Browns 16 - 2 bad teams,
Panthers 10 Bucs 16 - 2 teams that didn't make the playoffs, the home team won
Bengals 13 Ravens 44 - Bengals did make the playoffs, game probably should have been closer, but then again the Ravens went on to win it all, so it's about right
Rams 23 Lions 27 - Neither team made the playoffs, although the Rams were close. The home team won in a close game.
Falcons 40 Chiefs 24 - Chiefs in for a bad season losing at home, Falcons made the playoffs, had home field in the playoffs, good start winning big on the road.
Colts 21 Bears 41 - Should have been a closer game, Bears were 10-6, near playoff team playing at home. Either it should be been a closer, or Colts should have won a game considering their final records were just 1 game apart, it was almost right the Bears won, it should have been a closer game.
49ers 30 Packers 22 - Both playoff teams, SF finished a half game higher, and went much farther in the playoffs than GB
Chargers 22 Raiders 14 - bad teams, the Chargers finished 3 games ahead of the Raiders so score was about right.


So of all the scores, a few maybe should have been closer, but they were almost all spot on with how the teams' seasons went, with the exception of one game, that was the Seahawks losing on the road to the Cards.

IOW, the Vikes losing at the Lions was NOT a good sign for this season.

The Eagles apparently had an opportunity to acquire San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick in 2012, according to an ESPN report Sunday. The top two decision-makers at the time, coach Andy Reid and general manager Howie Roseman, were asked about the report this week. Neither denied it, but neither confirmed it, either. "Those questions you probably need to direct toward Howie," said Reid, who is now the Kansas City Chiefs coach. "His memory's way better than mine. I'm getting old." When Roseman was asked about the report Monday on his weekly radio show on WIP-FM (94.1), the general manager eluded the question.

Not sure if this is true. Harbaugh and SF traded up in the 2nd rd to get Kap and by all reports Harbaugh was enamored with him.

Perhaps their refering to the fact that they had the opportunity to draft him like the other 31 teams

I'm disgusted with my Giants. This is the third time they have been SMOKED by the Panthers. The first one was in the playoffs during the '05 season. It was the first party I had at my new place (here). I had cold bottles of beer on ice, a catered spread of all sorts of things, bottles of wine, etc.....within an hour you knew the game was lost. 23-0 was the score, one and done. Then at the end of the '09 season they had a must win game at home against Carolina. They shit the bed so badly that Carl Banks was saying (over and over) that the defense lacked heart. They were pasted 41-9 and then in the last week of the season the VIKINGS pasted us as well for good measure with an almost identical score. I guess that was revenge for the playoffs.

This game was just brutal. 38-0. My phone was exploding with angry texts from my brother, and two of my friends who live in other parts of the country. The Giant game text messages between us aren't going to be fun this year. Just a horrible year for my teams. The Giants really look lost[:(]

Surprises after 3 games

* Saints with 2 game lead after just 3 games
* Seattle with 2 game lead after just 3 games
* Packers in 3rd place in the NFC North after 3 games
* Giants 0-3 and losing to Carolina 38-0 (if only the Panthers got one more FG)
* Cheifs at 3-0
