I can't agree. Now I'm not about to compare it to slave labor like Peterson did. And I certainly don't side with him in terms of him deserving more; he negotiated his contract going in. He knew the parameters.

But I also think the NFL players have gotten the short end of the stick. NFL players' life spans are dramatically shortened by their play with concussions and basically being battering rams for years. So it's kind of crazy that their contract situation is the worst of all teams. The NFL players' union has been very, very weak compared to the other leagues for years.

Very pro-union of you, Dustin. I like it. [sm=high5.gif]

I get his displeasure with how contracts work in NFL vs other sports. I personally wish other sports were more like NFL instead of other way around. There should be a way out of guaranteed contracts IMHO.

Glad to hear he's showing up today. Hopefully he and team can mend fences and have a productive year.

But if there's a way out, what would make them guaranteed?

I guess I should have written that better. Ideally, for all sports, only a portion of the contract is guaranteed. If you get hurt or are no longer effective you shouldn't get full pay, a prorated portion of it should be guaranteed, not full salary.

I think NFL contracts are too harsh probably but other sports with fully guaranteed contracts aren't right either. Somewhere in between is the right mix. Fair to both players and teams.

If you get a major injury at work should you not get disability or worker's comp?

That's a pretty slippery slope IMO.

[&:][&:] I'm a little weird on this issue. I hate how much power the MLB players' union has, but I think football contracts are fairly terrible. Those guys go through hell and their lives are 20 years shorter or so (or more) as a result, yet they have the worst contract situation in sports? That doesn't make sense IMO. The NFL concussion lawsuit settlement was a joke too. Those that are really effected (or their surviving families) will basically get peanuts.

Decided to keep it on PA's show for a little bit this morning w/ the Adrian Peterson news. Is this celebration really appropriate? Seems like it's in completely poor taste to get this excited about his return.

Hear hear.

Disability doesn't pay 100% salary, I think the insurance we have is either 60% or 66%. I'm not sure about work comp, but I don't think it pays 100% either. Plus after being out for too long, I'd have to start paying 100% of my medical insurance.

He's one very very unaware dude.
We need to accept that when dealing with him. IMO.

A lot of salaried arrangements are not that way. Many have contracts or buyouts, severance, etc.

I'm not sure you understood. If I'm disabled I don't get paid 100%, I get paid either 60% or 66%. I don't care if teams have insurance to cover what they are paying the player, not relevant to the discussion. Players who can't play either due to injury or declining skills don't deserve 100% of their contract.

I hear ya. I could get on board with something like that. But I do think football players currently have a pretty bad deal. I know when I have kids I'll be one of those parents that doesn't let them play football.

I agree that football players have a bad deal, unless they have a large signing bonus, and I think players with fully guaranteed contracts have too good of deal. Should be something in between. Which was what I tried to say from the beginning.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (6/2/2015 2:16:30 PM)

it's a really bad deal for them compared to MLB and the NBA

but it's their fault too. The CBA negotiations SHOULD be more contentious this time.

As I understand it, and admittedly, I'm not 100% certain,
That 60 or 60% is non taxable income...so it ends up close to 100%

McMurfy -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (6/2/2015 3:19:12 PM)

Looking for some friendly input,
I did not see Bridgewater play last year, and while I'm certain he was the best QB taken last year, I'm not sure he is worthy of the praise thrown upon him in the Vikings threads.
I realize he put up some good numbers in the last 7 games, but hard for me to gauge having never seen him play.

Any opinions?

djskillz -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (6/2/2015 3:25:38 PM)

As someone who was very skeptical of him coming in, I am as high as you can be on him now. The kid just has "it". To me the most important things for a QB are:

Icewater in your veins. Gotta be able to stand in there and make pressure plays. He has that in spades.
Leadership. Ditto.
Work ethic and football intelligence. Gotta be able to make adjustments and constantly improve. He improved all throughout the year, both game by game and on individual plays.
Accuracy. Also has that in spades.

He had a really great rookie year, one of the best ever in the NFL efficiency-wise. Despite absolutely nothing around him; bad OL play, not much for RB's or WR's. And despite being just 21. I hate to compare him to Joe Montana (the best ever IMO) but he has a LOT of the same traits. I still worry about him getting injured here or there, but you could worry about that with any NFL QB. He has all of the intangibles and qualities that you look for in a stud QB in the league today. The qualities above are all there for the best QB's; Brady, Rodgers, Peyton, Luck, Brees...

No reason as he continues to mature and grow he can't join that group. The love is well deserved IMO. If anything, he's not getting enough. It's the most excited I've ever been about a Viking QB in my lifetime. And I really believe he can one that can finally take us to the promised land.

Good feedback
The thought of giving him a Running Back has me excited, as does the thought of giving that RB a Quarterback.
The defense under Zim seems as good and young as I can ever remember(started watching full time in '79)

I also like the fact that we can offense or Oline if need be in next years draft as most of the defensive positions are at least on paper, in pretty good shape.

Could use a Punter though....good problem to have.

Yep. Having AD plays right into his strengths. 8 man front against Bridgewater? Good luck with that. More blitzes? Good luck with that. That's where he excels. Agree on the defense; I bet it'll be top 5 in the NFL this year with a chance to be #1 within 1-2 years. Quickly becoming dominant, and still very young. Pair that with a good young QB? No reason we can't be the "next" Seattle.

Whether or not its taxable depends on if you paid the premium or your employer did. If you pay the premium with after tax income the disability payments are not taxable.

If paid with before tax income or employer paid, which is what it is in my case, it is taxable.

Also looked up for Work Comp. Those are NOT taxable. You get 2/3 of your gross weekly wage up to 102% of the statewide average weekly wage for the period ending Dec. 31 of the previous year.

For 2014 the SAWW was $961 so the max benefit for work comp is $980.22 per week.

I agree with your assessment of Teddy and also looking forward to seeing him in there with Peterson.

Upgrades probably needed on OL and at Safety opposite Smith, unless either Exum or one of the newcomers prove useful. I hated Blanton last year and Sendejo isn't the answer either.

djskillz -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (6/2/2015 7:22:14 PM)

I'm a big Exum fan, and was before the draft, so I'm hoping he's our longterm answer there. Sounds like he'll have every opportunity to be Smith's partner in crime this season. Hope he takes it and runs with it.

OL is definitely the key otherwise.

It's amazing how bright the futures suddenly are for all 4 main MN franchises right now.
