Quick thoughts;

Peyton is still not very good, but did enough I guess. That defense is for real though. A few of us from the board made it to Denver to watch the Vikes earlier this year and there's no denying that defense is great; has been all year.

Still, I just don't see them having enough against Carolina. I think we may see Seattle/Denver SuperBowl part 2 in a couple weeks, with a blowout.

I do think the Pats were just a little too beat up. And I'm normally not a conspiracy theorist, but I wouldn't doubt that the refs had at least a little something to say yesterday. 85 percent of all bets/money were on the Pats; a Pats win meant HUGE losses in Vegas for the casinos. Among the most lopsided betting games ever I believe. Still, heck of a game. That throw from Brady to Gronk was one of the best I've ever seen.

My only big complaint was that the NFL got what it wanted. More games decided by random/fluke events like extra points because it's "exciting". Here's a thought; get rid of extra points completely instead. Yep, no excuses; guy has to make the kick. But we were robbed of a fantastic OT playoff game because of a very stupid new rule by the NFL.

patriots should have won.

2 shots at a decent FG before the last drive and they passed them up.
No excuse. Bill messed up.

Ya, that surprised me a bit too. Especially when Peyton was on the other side and can't throw a ball 20 yards.

Denver was going nowhere on offense. NE had them stuffed.

Heck they could have made 2 FGs then had the winner lined up at the end and not needed the TD,either.

djskillz -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (1/25/2016 4:24:37 PM)

True. That Denver offense with this version of Peyton (one of the worst QB's in the league) is atrocious.

If they cannot run the ball vs Carolina, they'll need turnovers to generate points.

Agree. This whole thing makes our loss a bit more painful. We easily could have beat Seattle. We easily could have beat Denver, on the road. We could have won the whole thing this year. Down year for the NFL IMO. And the product continues to get worse and worse ever year with parity (ie mediocrity).

Unfortunately I don't see how they could have gotten past Carolina.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (1/25/2016 4:40:19 PM)

I see

"Somehow"

That Peyton gets a Super Bowl title and exits(ala his boss, John Elway)

BTW, that face job the owner lady got for Denver?

MDK -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (1/25/2016 6:08:11 PM)

Denver has a great defense.
Carolina has a very good defense and a very good offense.

Carolina prevents Peyton from getting his second super bowl victory.

Even so, he, Peyton, has been there 4 times and will have won it once.

No Vikings QB with a Super Bowl victory. 55 years and counting.

We are trying to be the Cubs of the NFL.

Or should I phrase it, the Cubs are the Vikings of MLB. Meaning the Vikings are more cursed than the Cubs.

No, I'm sorry, we are even close to that level of futility and fatalism. The purgatory of Viking fans is much shorter and we have actually been to 4 out of the 50 Super Bowls. Cubs fans would consider that to be some level of deliverance.

SoMnFan -> Super Bowl Chat (2/4/2016 10:21:20 AM)

Spent most of my young life admiring and feeling sorry for .... Archie Manning.

Love seeing him be the most-successful "Dad of the QBs" at this point, tho.
Good for him. He deserves great things for all the abuse he took.
Some good karma.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Super Bowl Chat (2/4/2016 10:34:43 AM)

I'm not big on influencing my kid's opinions about people. Let them find out for themselves, most of the time.

However, my son thought Michael Irvin was pretty cool, and all that after watching multiple NFL network broadcasts.

Until I told him what Irvin was like, off the field, in the day.

Now? He doesn't care if he's on TV.

Mission accomplished [:D]

TJSweens -> RE: Super Bowl Chat (2/4/2016 10:48:37 AM)

Here is a CNN article on Fred McNeill's decline and death. Really a sad ending for someone who by all accounts was just a stand up guy.

Matt Blair and Fred McNeil.....two great Vikings linebackers.

We're crazy if we think our influence isn't felt by those who grow up in our house.
Positively or negatively.
I'm regretting steering one son towards Mn teams.
The other son has attached to other teams and is living happily ever after in sportsville.

Matt Blair and Fred McNeil.....two great Vikings linebackers.

I realize I'm biased, but IMO, the Vikings invented
Using RBs out of the backfield
Using TEs exclusively as third down bail-out-ers
Using uber athletes in the outside LB positions

Honestly, I saw us doing those things before the golden children got credit for it
Burnsie was running the west coast offense before Jesus Bill Walsh
Foreman was the man long before those who are called innovators
McNeil and Blair were the first game-changers from the stand up position

djskillz -> RE: Super Bowl Chat (2/4/2016 1:57:11 PM)

Anyone have predictions for the game?

I'm thinking this may turn into Seattle/Denver part 2. I just don't think Denver can score on Carolina, and Cam'll likely be the difference. Can't think of many SuperBowls I've been less interested in though. I don't really like either team.

I've always been a bit anti-Peyton just because I always liked Brady, but I must admit that Cam venturing into "Lebron-esque" territory, and blaming flack on race (umm, no one has a problem with the way Russell Wilson or Teddy Bridgewater carry themselves, Cam) has me sort of tilting towards Peyton on this one. Will be interesting.

SoMnFan -> RE: Super Bowl Chat (2/4/2016 2:02:25 PM)

I want Denver
I really don't like Carolina
But I see in reality .... Carolina in a blowout
The Mo she is a powerful gal, and she's been riding in the Carolina bus all year.

SoMnFan -> RE: Super Bowl Chat (2/4/2016 2:04:27 PM)

Btw .... I've mellowed on almost every great team that I used to hate over the years.
The one exception has been the 85 Bears.
Still hate them
Excited to see the 30 for 30 tonight, but worried it'll sway what remains of my hatred.
Damn, I'm getting soft.

I believe the WC offense would have been realized earlier w/the Vikings , if they'd won a Super Bowl or 2.

McNeil/Blair were awesome. Such a sad story.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Super Bowl Chat (2/4/2016 2:12:16 PM)

Carolina will win. I'm convinced of it.

Also...with the prepared TD crap that gets flagged.....how is Cam Newton's stuff not flagged????

Oh yeah, the double-standard exists.

Maybe

The celebrations seem a little over the top.

But football should be fun....rather than the No Fun League. And Cam loves what he is doing.

Great article on Cam Newton in ESPN the Magazine.

Carolina played and defeated Tennessee on the road and a woman complained about Cam's pelvic thrusts, etc. during his TD celebrations.....said she had her 9 year old daughter focus on the cheerleaders........yep, those half naked women gyrating to the entertainment of men in the stands.......purity at its purest.

Then, Cam and his GF had a baby and people complained that Cam and GF weren't married..........how about Tom Brady getting a woman pregnant and leaving her before the baby is born to go with a super model.....did they complain about Brady?

The most interesting part of the article is the give and take between Cam and Warren Moon........Cam asked Warren about his pro day. Warren said he didn't have one. When he said he didn't want to demonstrate his ability to be a receiver of d back, the cancelled his pro day.

As good as Warren was in the NFL, I still remember watching him when I was in grad school. We got a couple of Canadian stations that I could get in Grand Forks so I could watch the CFL. Warren lead the Edmonton Eskimos to five consecutive Grey Cup victories in 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, and 1982. I remember the ones in 80, 81 and 82. Man could he throw......he was fast and could scramble and could throw on the run the ball as far as any QB I had seen up to that point. What a fun player to watch. But he went undrafted because he didn't want to change positions.

Cam and his father refused to let failures by people like JaMarcus Russell deter Cam......the NFL investigated Cam thoroughly (after his problems at Florida) and questioned Frat and Sorority people at Auburn and bartenders about Cam, even though Cam doesn't drink.

Very insightful article.

It was unbelievable that Warren Moon was treated the way he was coming out of college. I can't imagine the NFL numbers he would have put up had his entire career been with the NFL.

djskillz -> RE: Super Bowl Chat (2/4/2016 4:10:57 PM)

I guess I don't even have a big problem with the celebrations, and even like the giving to kids part. It's more, like Lebron, about the "Chosen" name for his baby, and the talk he does of himself as the best/Lebron of NFL, etc.

It's also, I think in both cases, and guys like Manziel, etc., probably just a reflection of what I don't like about the millennial generation re: selfies, etc. So it's not all about him; just he's probably a representation of the things I don't like.

As for college, I think he did absolutely get paid, but big deal. Like steroids, almost all these guys do. I agree with you on the cheerleader/complaint, Miles. And I think it'd be naive to think that NONE of the people that dislike Cam's antics are racist. But I think the vast majority of it is not about race. The league is probably 85 percent African American. And I don't see anyone complaining about Russell Wilson or Teddy Bridgewater.
