Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) will introduce legislation aimed at eliminating the NFL's tax-exempt status, she announced at a press conference on Tuesday.

Cantwell's motivation for introducing the legislation is the league's continued inaction against the Washington Redskins name.

“The NFL needs to join the rest of Americans in the 21st century,” she said, according to The Washington Post. “It is about right and wrong.”

The press conference was called by the Native American coalition Change the Mascot, which has sent a letter to 31 NFL owners urging them to take action that could lead to the Redskins name being changed.

Washington owner Dan Snyder was the only owner to whom the letter was not sent.

The letter, one of which was obtained by the Washington Post, highlights a section of the NFL's bylaws that grants the league power to discipline any owner guilty of "conduct detrimental to the welfare of the League or professional football."

The letter says Snyder has exhibited such conduct by promoting "this racial slur."

Seriously, If they would just take the "red" off of the name and the native american off the helmet (logo designs aren't that hard to come by, just ask Tampa Bay) all this would go away.

Dave E -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (9/16/2014 2:54:36 PM)

Nike has pulled Peterson jerseys from its shelves.

And the Wilfs stay silent. It was bad enough when we gave these clowns a half billion dollars in the sweetheart stadium deal; their absence of leadership just salts the wound.

The only problem I have with de-activation is that it accomplishes nothing. It's a paid vacation for Peterson. He got paid almost a million dollars on Sunday to put his feet up and watch the game on TV. If you have grounds to punish him then take the risk and suspend him. Otherwise I would just as soon make him earn the money he is going to be paid until the courts and the NFL give them enough support to actually suspend him without pay.

Not sure I agree with that. I think rushing records are what AD lives for. He constantly states his desire to reach season and career rushing records. Not playing is killing him.

TJSweens -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (9/16/2014 8:35:11 PM)

I think Peterson says things to create buzz. It reinforces his persona. I'm not convinced that not playing is exactly killing him. At the end of the day deactivating him is nothing more than PR, which means it's purely superficial and not punitive. If they have to pay him anyway, he might as well play. At almost $1M a pop, they might as well suspend him for 4 games. Even if the PA appeals and wins, they aren't out any more money than if they deactivated him.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (9/16/2014 8:48:24 PM)

Just think

If it were you or me that had switched a child of yours/mine, and those pics were out there

how long would it have taken to have charges filed?

how long would it have taken for people to say throw you/me in jail?

Even if you/I said "I was raised that way??"

djskillz -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (9/16/2014 9:43:54 PM)

Oh, it would take a while for the process to play out, Ed. He's already been indicted but he's been released on bond. I don't think the process is playing out any differently than it would otherwise from a time perspective.

And how much support would you get from your peers, or from social media?

May to September?

No way. I'd be in the can the next day.

Exactly.

As Black noted, AP is a pig of a person. Great football player, total wreck off the field.

AD would be in jail now too if not for bail.

djskillz -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (9/17/2014 8:30:03 AM)

Proud of the Vikings and AD today. They come to terms and invoke something that's never been done in league history and everyone comes out about as good as they can. Adrian gets to focus on his case and gets due process, the Vikings get to avoid a battle with the players' union, and the league gets to save face.

Carolina Panthers, take note. For as bad as the Vikings initially bungled this, I'm glad they're taking a lead for the league now.

Nothing to be Proud of, IMO

Shouldn't have been activated right away. They bungled the entire process, got ripped, lost sponsors, and then did what they should have done in the first place.

djskillz -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (9/17/2014 8:50:40 AM)

Is this what you're saying, Ed? [:D]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkxB15nXRvM

I agree, I guess. But at least they stepped up now and this was really the best solution for all parties. Again, they could be Carolina and just sitting back waiting to copy whatever the Vikings do. In a much worse/malicious situation IMO.

Couldn't agree more. This whole process confirms what we've known about the Wilfs for years: they are money grubbing bastards who care nothing about anything beyond getting more green for themselves. That's what drove this whole process.

Not exactly the Branch Rickeys of the NFL here. Sickens me that Goodell and the NFL clowns talk about leadership, when absolutely none of it has been displayed by the NFL or any team thus far. Pathetic.

They got to the right answer, but they get the minimum amount of credit for it.

Agree completely.

Additionally, punishment isn't the entire reason here for sitting him down. You would like to think we cheer for a team that will make the statement that no, we don't want a guy who beats his child to represent us.

Only after you exhaust all other options, then do the right thing.

As I said, it's purely a PR move with no real punitive value. We'll just give him a paid vacation. That'll show him. They can do this for 4 games without the NFLPA stepping in. Why not just suspend him for 4 games? The fact that the NFLPA files a grievance doesn't mean they will win. Even if they do it is 10X the PA move, because they can say we tried to do the right thing and rather than show AD that are willing to overlook it they send the message that this kind of conduct won't be tolerated as long as you play for this organization. Don't go the chickenshit deactivation route. Suspend his abusive ass!

"We made a mistake and we needed to get this right." -#Vikings owner Zygi Wilf

djskillz -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (9/17/2014 11:06:36 AM)

Wilf has needed a new PR handler for a LOOOOONNNNGGGG time. That never should have been Spielman/Zimmer out there answering questions about all this. That's not their domain IMO. Incredibly unfair to them.

Honestly, if a Wilf told me the sky was blue, I would go verify.

@markcraignf lMark Wilf on whether sponsors played a role: "Absolutely not."

SoMnFan -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (9/17/2014 11:09:03 AM)

Now the media hacks attacking the Viking Brass for not apologizing to the Moms.
Wow this is some crazy stuff.
Can we have a redo on everything post-2000?
Please?

Dave E -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (9/17/2014 11:10:44 AM)

This is after, mind you, after Zygi says that it's important to listen to fans/community/sponsors.

djskillz -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (9/17/2014 11:12:53 AM)

So what happens from here? I"m betting:

Community service plea deal for Peterson (may not even get to that point until the offseason).
Finishes off the year on the commissioner's exemption list.
Lots of apologizing, new education programs, PSA's from AD in the offseason.
Back on the team next season under a reworked 2-3 year deal lowering his contract for 2015.

SoMnFan -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (9/17/2014 11:13:35 AM)

Well, on the bright side, we ARE the number one story nationally

Be F-ing careful from now on, how you word your three wishes, genie-rubbers.

Yep, that sounds about right. My guess is he angles for a plea deal w/ no jail time as quickly as possible -- then, the NFL can suspend this year and he can be good to go for 2015. No way the Wilfs dump him (unless they think keeping him will cost them money), so I agree, reworked deal and he'll be the starting RB a year from now.
